Scott Announces 2015 NSU Football Recruiting Class

NORFOLK, Virginia  -- Norfolk State head football coach Latrell Scott announced Wednesday the addition of eight new players who signed national letters of intent on National Signing Day.

Scott's first recruiting class at NSU now stands at 12 players, with the eight signees Wednesday joining four mid-year enrollees who joined the program in January.

Of the 12 recruits, six play offense and six play defense. The class includes two running backs, three offensive linemen, one athlete, three defensive linemen, two linebackers and one defensive back. Eleven of the 12 are originally from the state of Virginia. There are four prep school transfers, one junior college transfer, one Division I FBS transfer, and six high school recruits in the group.

"Our main goal and objective was to address the needs of the program. I feel that we signed 12 quality student-athletes who are a good fit for our program," Scott said. "We didn't focus more on one area than another, but rather wanted to fill our immediate needs and add depth across the board."

Following is a player-by-play look at the Spartans' signees to date, with biographical information and quotes from Scott on each. Scott said that more additions to the class are possible within the coming weeks and months.

NCCU Football Adds 19 Eagles To 2015 Recruiting Class

DURHAM, North Carolina  -- Last year, North Carolina Central University head football coach Jerry Mack had less than two months to ink a recruiting class on national signing day. Now, with a full year for Mack and his coaching staff to look for the best prospects, along with the ability to showcase a conference championship, the second-year head coach announces the addition of 19 Eagles to the NCCU football program.

"This year we had a full spring and fall for recruiting, so we were able to address our needs," Mack said. "Our focus was on getting stronger in the offensive line and then build from there."

Of the 19 signees, 15 high school seniors and four transfers, five are offensive linemen with an average size of 6-4, 281 pounds. The class also consists of three defensive backs, three wide receivers, two defensive linemen, two running backs, two tight ends, a linebacker and a quarterback.

As with last year's signing class, NCCU hit the state of North Carolina hard, with more than half of the incoming freshmen (8 of 15) calling The Tar Heel State their home.

"It talks about how our momentum is going in the area," Mack said about the success of in-state recruiting. "We believe there is great talent in the state and we continue to build strong relationships in the state."

NCCU will open the 2015 season on Sept. 5 at home inside O'Kelly-Riddick Stadium against Saint Augustine's.

North Carolina A&T Aggies Announce 2015 Class

GREENSBORO, North Carolina  -- On February 5, 2011, Rod Broadway was named the head football coach at North Carolina A&T, which was a day after National Signing Day, and he therefore had no National Signing Day class to speak of.

Four years and one MEAC title later, there is a lot to talk about in Aggieland when it comes to football. Broadway, 2 ½ months removed from leading the Aggies to a share of the MEAC title, the school’s first championship in 11 years, announced his 2015 Signing Day class on Wednesday. The Aggies signed three defensive linemen, three offensive linemen, three wide receivers, two defensive backs, two linebackers, two specialists, one running back and one quarterback.

“It’s hard sometimes when you go in with a plan and see a guy who is pretty good, but he doesn’t fill a need. You have to walk away from him, and we did that quite a bit this year,” said Broadway. “Three years ago we could not do that. Two years ago we could not do that.

“We believe it is a good class on paper. We hopefully filled most of our needs with this class. We needed to get a few offensive linemen, defensive linemen and long snappers, which we did. We feel good about what we're bringing in here. They are good people, good students and hopefully they can come in here and help us.”

2015 Recruiting Class Breakdown

A&T has been of the best run stopping defenses in the nation over the past four years thanks to a solid defensive front. The Aggies added to their depth with signing of defensive linemen Kadarius Kendrick (6-5, 250, Forest Park, Ga., Forest Park HS), Calvin Trotty (6-3, 270, Spring Lake, N.C., Overhills HS) and Jermaine Williams (6-3, 265, Lumberton, N.C., Lumberton HS).

The Aggies needed to add depth along the offensive line after losing All-American center Ronald Canty, All-American and three-time All-MEAC standout guard/tackle William Ray Robinson III and 2014 starting right guard Olin Leak. In a hope to replace their success, the Aggies inked offensive linemen Malik Johnson (6-3, 340, Arden, N.C., Christ School), Marcus Pettiford (6-4, 270, Durham, N.C., Hillside HS) and Micah Shaw (6-2, 260, Fayetteville, N.C., Seventy-First HS).

Big-play receivers Denzel Keyes, Xavier Griffin and Caleb Gabriel really enhanced the Aggies offense in 2014. A&T added to its big playmaking capabilities by bringing in Shawn Barnes (6-4, 180, Fayetteville, N.C., E.E. Smith), Donovahn Jones (6-3, 190, Stockbridge, Ga., University of Minnesota transfer) and Cameron Moore (6-3, 190, Bayboro, N.C., Pamlico County HS).

A&T’s secondary consisted of two All-American corners in Donald Mattocks and Tony McRae. Mattocks completed his eligibility in 2014 and McRae will be entering his senior season. The Aggies replenished their defensive backfield with Jalon Bethea (6-0, 170, Durham, N.C., Hillside HS) and Craig Gailliard, Jr. (6-0, 185, Dearborn, Mich., Edsel Ford).

One of the best tacklers in school history, All-MEAC linebacker D’Vonte Grant, played his final season at A&T in 2014. A&T hopes to keep their reputation for stellar defense intact with linebackers Adrian McPherson (6-0, 210, Fayetteville, N.C., E.E. Smith HS) and Julius Reynolds (5-11, 215, Wilmington, N.C., Hoggard HS). The Aggies also added two specialists in long snapper Landon Brewer (6-1, 235, Lumberton, N.C., Lumberton HS) and punter Steven Sawicki (6-4, 210, Hope Mills, N.C., Grays Creek HS).

William Hollingsworth (5-9, 240, Plymouth, N.C., Plymouth HS) will join the Aggies at the running back position, while Kylil Carter (5-11, 213, Austell, Ga., South Cobb HS) will try to become the future at the quarterback positon for A&T.

“It gives you a lot of credibility when you win championships and you get a program turned around,” said Broadway. “Kids want to play for championships. Kids want to play for rings. I hope we can get some more (championships) in here. It makes recruiting a whole heckuva lot easier.”

Hampton's Maynor Announces 2015 Class of Signees

HAMPTON, Virginia  -- Hampton University head football coach Connell Maynor, preparing for his second season at the helm, announced his 2015 signing class of Wednesday as part of National Signing Day, a slate of 19 players.

"Very pleased and excited with the 2015 signing class," Maynor said. "I think we addressed some of the areas we needed … signing five defensive linemen, five linebackers, two defensive backs. So we're heavy on the defensive side, and I think that was one of our weakest areas last season.

"We've also got some guys who can step in and help us right now, which was what we were trying to do … as we try to get back to our championship ways here at Hampton."

Where applicable, click on each player's name to view their highlights on Hudl.

Wednesday's signees:

Ronald Bell (5-7, 158, RB, Fort Washington, Md./Friendly HS): Rushed for 203 yards as a senior, on top of 267 receiving yards; also spent time on defense as safety. Bell averaged 9.2 yards per carry and 24.3 yards per catch this past season.

JaReke Chambers (6-0, 180, RB, Spencer, N.C./North Rowan HS): Hudl lists his 40-meter dash time at a 4.45; rushed for over 1,500 yards this past season after turning in a 2,018-yard effort in his junior season. Chambers also played high school basketball.

Elijah Ferrell (6-3, 275, DL, Fayetteville, N.C./Terry Sanford HS): Had 82 total tackles this past season, averaging 6.3 tackles per game. Ferrell racked up 224.0 tackles for loss and 7.0 sacks in his senior season, while also picking off two passes.

Tyler Frazier (6-3, 200, DB, Columbia, S.C./Spring Valley HS): Played strong safety at Spring Valley; his best performance of his senior season came in a 31-7 win over Ridge View, when he had 16 tackles, two pass breakups, and a 41-yard interception return for a touchdown.

Gibril Ghee (6-3, 290, DT, Lilburn, Ga./Berkmar HS): Played on both the offensive and defensive lines for Berkmar.

Devan Johnson (6-2, 198, LB, Duluth, Ga./Northview HS): Totaled 142 tackles in his junior and senior seasons, including 52 solo stops this past season. Johnson had five sacks as a senior, and as a running back, he scored 10 touchdowns as a junior.

Keenan Kelly (6-3, 240, LB, Ellenwood, Ga./Cedar Grove HS): Had 22 tackles in five games as a senior, while also causing two fumbles and intercepting one pass.

Malik Mackey (6-7, 330, OL, Atlanta, Ga./Mays HS): In 26 career games as a varsity player, Mackey had 11 pancake blocks – including six as a junior in 2013.

Joseph Stevenson (6-3, 210, LB, Fayetteville, N.C./Britt HS): Had 139 total tackles as a junior, including a forced fumble, four recovered fumbles, and a blocked field goal.

Desmond Sturdivant (6-3, 250, DE, Greensboro, N.C./Smith HS): On top of playing defensive end and outside linebacker for Ben L. Smith, Sturdivant is also a forward on the Golden Eagles basketball team.

Devin Thurmond (6-3, 215, DL, Ellenwood, Ga./Cedar Grove HS): Totaled 10 tackles as a senior, while also spending time on the offensive line and tight end; Thurmond is a versatile athlete who can play on the edge.

Damon Woodcock (6-2, 220, LB, Norcross, Ga./Norcross HS): Had 23 tackles as a senior in eight games played, while also tallying 2.5 sacks. Woodcock averaged just under three tackles per contest this past season.

In addition, the following players were early signees:

Shakim Alonzo (6-5, 205, WR, Pittsburgh, Pa./Cincinnati): Redshirted in 2012 with the Bearcats, before playing in nine games this past season. Alonzo was listed as a tight end on Cincinnati's 2014 football roster.

Jabari Thomas (5-10, 180, CB, Victorville, Calif./Victor Valley CC): Attended Hargrave Military Academy before walking on at Towson. Thomas graduated from Victor Valley Community College in December and has two years of eligibility remaining.

David Watford (6-2, 210, QB, Hampton, Va./Virginia): The Hampton High graduate started all 13 games for the Cavaliers in 2013, completing 244 passes for 2,202 yards and eight touchdowns. Watford split time at quarterback and wide receiver last season.

Robert Zimmerman (6-3, 325, DL, Sumter, S.C./Toledo): Played in six career games at Toledo after transferring there from Hutchinson (Kan.) Community College; Zimmerman had three assisted tackles in those six games.

Delaware State Announces Nine National Signing Day Additions

DOVER, Delaware  --  New Delaware State University head football coach Kenny Carter has announced that a total of eight high school seniors and college transfers have signed the National Letter of Intent today to attend DSU and join the Hornets for the 2015 season. In addition, an offensive lineman who played at FCS Stetson last year has signed with the Hornets for the 2016 season.

The incoming 2015 class features three defensive linemen, a quarterback, running back, wide receiver, kicker and long snapper.

“I believe we addressed the most immediate needs entering the spring with today’s signings,” said Carter, who was announced as head coach of the Hornets on Jan. 21. “We addressed some special teams needs with the addition of a solid kicker and long snapper. We’ve also signed major talents at quarterback and along the defensive line.”

Inking a scholarship offer from the Hornets today is quarterback Kobie Lain, a 6-1, 205 pound left-handed thrower from Stockbridge, Ga.

Lain combined for 18 passing and rushing touchdowns as a senior at Woodland High School in 2014. He passed for 1,650 yards and rushed for 622 during his senior season, helping lead the school to a 7-3 record last season, its best since 2009. Lain also considered offers from FBS Tulane, along with FCS Campbell, Nicholls and Valparaiso.

“Kobie is a dual threat quarterback who excelled against quality high school competition,” Carter said. “He has all the skills we’re looking for, including a strong arm, quick feet and good vision; in addition to being smart a player.”

The Hornets also tapped the state of Georgia for help along the defensive line.

Javon Barnes and Christian Johnson were teammates at Stephenson High School in Stone Mountain, Ga. Barnes, a two-way lineman in high school, is slated to compete at tackle for the Hornets, while Johnson will likely line up on the end.

In addition, Robert Jernigan from Georgia’s Carver High School, will join the Hornets’ defensive line this fall.

Rounding out the additions on the defensive front are Brooklyn, N.Y., high school teammates Abdul Ajelero and Jacob Jones. Ajelero is projected to line up at defensive end while Jones is expected to compete on the inside.

“One of the newcomers is a natural interior guy, while the other two are ends who may grow into tackles at some point in their careers. Each of these new linemen brings a combination of toughness and athleticism that will greatly aid our team. We are quite fortunate to sign linemen of this quality.”
In the special teams area, the Hornets have secured commitments from kicker Wisdom Nzidee, who competed at Div. II Paine College (Ga.) as a freshman in 2014; and long snapper Jonathan Scandrett, a teammate of Lain’s at Georgia’s Woodland High School.

Nzidee connected on nine-of-11 field goal attempts (long 46) and was 21-for-21 on extra-point kicks last year at Paine, which discontinued its football program after the 2014 season.

A Northern Delaware high school star also signed with the Hornets today.

Concord High School’s Brycen Alleyne helped lead the Raiders to the Delaware Division I playoffs as a two-way back and kick returner during his senior season. He was a 2014 Delaware All-State Second Team selection.

Delaware State’s running game should also get a boost from the addition of another Georgia product, Kesselly Tyler of Mays High School.

Tyler averaged six yards per carry and combined for nine touchdowns the past two years.

Carter has also announced that offensive lineman Charles Wallace, a transfer from FCS Stetson University (Fla.), has signed with the Hornets; and will be eligible to compete in 2016. Wallace was a 2014 All-Pioneer League Second Team selection as a freshman at Stetson this past season.

The new Hornet head coach relied on the many relationships he’s established in nearly 20 years as an assistant at such schools as Louisville, Florida, Penn State, Pittsburgh and Vanderbilt to help him attract talent to DSU after less than two weeks on the job.

“You develop a lot of contacts in the recruiting business,” Carter said. “I recruited the Southeastern U.S. in most of my others stops, and drew on my many relationships in the region to find talent that will help us rebuild quickly at Delaware State. The region is a hotbed of high school football; and I believe we have signed some players this year who can help us right away”.

The Hornet head coach also cited the off-the-field qualities of his first DSU recruits.

“In addition to the talent, I was equally impressed with the character and academic credentials of the young men we have signed. Each should be a good fit for the team and the university.”

Delaware State was 2-10 overall and 2-6 in the MEAC in 2014. Carter replaced Kermit Blount as the Hornets’ head coach. Blount posted a 16-29 record in four seasons at DSU.

B-CU Football Signs 22 to National Letters of Intent

DAYTONA BEACH, Florida  -- Bethune-Cookman University football head coach Terry Sims announced 22 student-athletes had signed national letters of intent to play collegiate football at B-CU on Wednesday, during the nation’s first day of early-signing for collegiate football. The announcement came at a reception for the Wildcats signing day inside the Mary McLeod Bethune Performing Arts Center.

“Overall, I’m very pleased,” stated Sims following the day’s signings. “Speaking of our coaches, I think we did a great job going out and securing this class. Some of these kids we’ve only been recruiting for a short period, and the coaches did a great job researching these guys. It’s a lot of work that goes into it, and we stayed on the road two to three weeks at a time away from our own families getting to know these guys and their families.

“We have an extensive process that we use when recruiting young men to Bethune-Cookman. We have to make sure that his transcript is where it needs to be. We have to make sure that socially, we speak to everyone at his high school – the janitor, the kitchen staff and counselors. We even talk to people in the community to make sure that we’re getting a good person. After that, we evaluate the football side of it.”

Bethune-Cookman’s letters of intent started rolling in around 8:30 a.m., and the fax machine and telephones did not stop until almost 4 p.m. In the end, Sims and his staff had all of the recruits they were seeking to sign, while there are still a few other offers out on the table for the coming days/weeks.

Of the 22 signees in this year’s class, 14 hail from the Sunshine State, while a number of others come from Georgia and Mississippi.

Five student-athletes come from junior colleges, with the rest all being incoming freshmen from high school.

“I am extremely pleased, once again, with the class, and I’m proud of the coaches for sticking in there and not wavering during the change,” continued Sims. “Everybody stuck to their guns, and just kept recruiting.”
