"We are very excited to announce our 2018-2019 schedule. Our staff has worked extremely hard to put together a challenging non-conference slate as well as welcome quality in state opponents to Historic Moore Gymnasium. We return a solid core group of guys and have added quality pieces to the mix. Our team is very enthusiastic about the challenges in the non-conference, but our goal is to be playing our best basketball in March," said Ridder.

Brevard Tornados gear up for home opener against Allen University Yellow Jackets

Tornados gear up for home opener against Allen UniversityBREVARD, North Carolina . – The Brevard College Tornados football team will look to bounce back at home this weekend as they square off with the Allen University Yellow Jackets for the first time in school history this Saturday, September 15th at 3:00 pm.

The Tornados are coming off of their bye week after facing off with Division 1-FCS opponent Davidson to open the season for the second straight year. The Wildcats prevailed in the matchup by a score of 34-13, despite two lightning delays on the night.

Brevard was highlighted by a trio of freshman in the second half of the opening contest. Quarterback Dalton Cole came into the game on the first drive of the second half and on just his second career collegiate completion connected with Tight End Blake Taylor for a 43-yard strike to get the Tornados on the board. Two drives later, Running Back Jayveon Love fooled the entire Davidson defense, flipping the run to the right side and finding the end zone on a 56-yard rush, earning him USA South Play of the Week honors for the opening week of the season. This rush put Love on top of the rushing totals for Brevard, as he finished with 62 yards on 3 carries and a touchdown.

A key for Brevard in their home opener will be how their defense holds up. The Tornados were led up front by Brandon Crawford, who totaled a team high 9 tackles on the night. Tanner Pettit and Kyle Fennell each recovered a fumble on the night, and Axel Easter forced an early 1st quarter fumble.

The offense will once again look to be steadied by Seniors Tyler Gregory and Bubba Craven. Gregory headed a steady first-half rushing attack for the Tornados, as the versatile offensive workhorse tallied 56 yards on 12 carries, with his longest being 11 yards. After coming off of a season of historical proportions for the program, Bubba Craven enjoyed a solid start to 2018, as he racked up 57 yards on 6 receptions, all coming in the first half.

The Opposition: The Allen University Yellowjackets will be making their first-ever trip to the mountains of Western North Carolina to take on the Tornados of Brevard. In fact, Allen will only be playing their third game since re-establishing their football program. The Yellowjackets returned to the gridiron after a 15-year hiatus and won their first game back as a program by a score of 47-3 over Columbus State. Teddy Keaton's squad faced off with Livingstone College this past Saturday, falling by a final score of 19-0. Saturday's matchup will mark the first time that Brevard has faced off with an NAIA member institution since 2009, when the Tornados faced off with Edward Waters College, prevailing on the road by a score of 51-6. Brevard earned their best record as an NCAA member institution that year, finishing with a record of 7-4.

Brevard College's SAAC "Cans Across the Conference": The Brevard College Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) will be collecting non-perishable pantry items at this weekend's football game versus Allen University. Adult admission to this Saturday's game is $10 or visitors can bring 5 canned good items for free admission. All donated items will benefit Bread of Life, Transylvania County's local community kitchen.

In addition to the Cans Across the Conference campaign, Brevard College Athletics will also be honoring hometown heroes at the home opener on Saturday.

Black ties XULA record in win vs. city rival Loyola

Xavier University of Louisiana women's volleyball

NEW ORLEANS — Kayla Black tied a Xavier University of Louisiana record Tuesday to lead the Gold Nuggets to a 25-19, 25-18, 25-20 volleyball victory against city rival Loyola at the Convocation Center.

The Nuggets (9-4) won their third in a row and snapped the four-match win streak of the Wolf Pack (8-5). XULA beat Loyola for the ninth time in their last 10 meetings.

Black, the reigning Gulf Coast Athletic Conference Attacker of the Week, tied the XULA record for kills in a three-set match with 18. She shares the mark with Taylor Reuther, who did it against Dillard in 2012 and Asbury in 2013. Black had 11 digs in her team-leading ninth double-double of the season.

BOX SCORE

Jordan Johnson had hit .467 with eight kills and two blocks for XULA, and Adili Rikondja and Vivica Price-Spraggins had six kills apiece. Beatrice Formilan, the reigning GCAC Defender of the Week, had 19 digs, and reigning GCAC Setter of the Week Eva Le Guillou had 42 assists, one fewer than the school record in a three-set match.

Maddie Hueckels hit .348 with eight kills, three aces, two blocks and 15 assists for Loyola. Malea Howie had seven kills, and Jordan Bernard had six kills, two aces and 10 digs. Helene Masone led the Wolf Pack with 12 digs.

XULA hit a season-high .330 and limited Loyola to .147. The Gold Nuggets had advantages of 49-33 in kills and 57-50 in digs.

"We're still working on our consistency," XULA coach Pat Kendrick said. "But we hit over .300 in every set, so it was a good hitting night."

XULA will open defense of its Gulf Coast Athletic Conference regular-season championship at 1 p.m. Saturday in the Convocation Center against another city rival, Dillard. XULA won the last seven GCAC regular-season and tournament championships.

"These non-conference matches have been getting us ready for conference," Kendrick said. "Our team has the mindset that we'll have to go in and fight for every point. Nobody owes us anything."

North Carolina A&T Women's Golf Releases 2018-19 Schedule

EAST GREENSBORO, North Carolina – The North Carolina A&T women’s golf who is making their first real transition in personnel since the program started three years ago, released their 2018-19 schedule on Monday.

The schedule includes 11 tournaments, four during the fall semester and seven more during the spring semester.

The Aggies open the season Sept. 24-25 at the Delaware State Invitational in Dover, Del. A week later they move on to the always challenging Starmount Fall Classic hosted by UNC Greensboro. The tournament normally features some of the top golf programs in the nation. N.C. A&T returns to the Starmount Fall Classic after competing there in 2016 but not 2017.

The fall semester closes out with the Aggies teeing it up at the Tiger Invitational hosted by Savannah State, Oct. 29-30 and the Oyster Chuck Match Play in Charleston, S.C.

2018-19 Women's Golf Schedule
“I know what we lost from last year,” said N.C. A&T coach Richard Watkins. “We lost some outstanding people and golfers from last year’s team. But that’s what happens when you have a program. Players are going to come and players are going to graduate. It’s up to us to put the foundation in place to where we stay competitive year after year. I think we’re doing that.”

N.C. A&T will take on their new schedule with three of their top golfers gone from the scorecards. Jill Harvison and Sofia Alvarez, junior college transfers, used up their eligibility last season while Bo Young Park transferred. The trio comprised the majority of the Aggies top-10 finishes over the first two years of the program’s existence with Alvarez earning two first-place finishes at tournaments last season.

Harvison had the Aggies lowest scoring average during the inaugural 2016-17 season and Park had three top-10 finishes including a third-place finish at the Tiger Fall Invitational in Savannah, Ga. Harvison, Alvarez and Park were also vital in the Aggies securing the first two tournament victories in program history last season.

While those players are no longer with the program, there are some stalwarts remaining in the program. Juniors Erica Johnson and Jocelyn Andrews have been with the program since Day 1 with both ladies showing tremendous improvement as sophomores. Sophomore Madison Harriman had a stellar freshman season where she showed signs of being able to shoot in the 70’s on a consistent basis.

In addition, Watkins added a big-time recruit that he pursued mightily in Atlanta freshman Christyn Carr. The Aggies also brought in junior college transfer Cheyanne Stewart out of Mesa, Ariz. With the new additions and the progress of the returners, the Aggies should be ready to compete for tournament titles during the spring.

The spring opens with the Aggies competing at the Oyster Chuck Match Play from Feb. 25-26. The Aggies came in second after entering play as the No. 6 seed. The Aggies will spend March 4-8 in Daytona Beach, Fla., as they will play in the LIU Invitational March 4-5 and the BCU Invitational March 7-8. The Bama Beach Bash will follow two weeks later before the Aggies take a month off from competition before competing in the Women In Golf Foundation Tournament April 27-28.

N.C. A&T’s two biggest tournaments close out the season. With no MEAC Championships in women’s golf, the MEAC Showcase in Savannah, Ga., is usually seen as the tournament that determines the best MEAC program among the five golf-playing schools. A year ago, the Aggies finished xx. This season’s showcase is April 19-20.

The PGA Minority Collegiate Golf Tournament is also an unofficial determinant of the best. As the top historically black universities vie to see who is superior at the Ryder Golf Course at the PGA Village in Port St. Lucie, Fla. The Aggies finished third last season.

Despite the losses of three outstanding players the Aggies will try to improve upon a season that included five second-place finishes and two third-place finishes to go along with the two tournaments they won.

Alabama A&M Women's Basketball releases 2018-19 schedule

Margaret Richards
MARGARET RICHARDS
HEAD WBB COACH
HUNTSVILLE, Alabama --  Margaret Richards enters her third season as the Alabama A&M women's basketball coach with high expectations.

With five returning starters and the majority of the roster back, Richards believes Alabama A&M has a team poised to climb the ladder in the Southwestern Athletic Conference hierarchy.

To help prepare her team for league play, Alabama A&M put together a robust non-conference schedule with a combination of marquee home games and road trips to power conference programs.

"We're excited about the schedule our team is playing," Richards said. "With four quality home games in the non-conference, along with trips to play some great competition in some marquee venues, we feel like this nonconference schedule should help prepare our players for what we will face when we get into conference play."

In November, Alabama A&M has two trips to power conference programs with games at Illinois and Kansas. The Bulldogs also have a road game against a UAB team that barely missed an NCAA tournament bid last season, along with a home game against Tennessee State.

Alabama A&M continues its trend of playing challenging nonconference opponents in December, with a pair of games at Austin Peay and Murray State, along with home games against Jacksonville State and Southeastern Louisiana. The Bulldogs also play in a holiday tournament in Jacksonville, Fla.

Alabama A&M opens conference play on Jan. 5, facing Jackson State at Elmore Gymnasium.

All of Alabama A&M's home games will be played at Elmore Gymnasium except for the Jan. 19 contest against Alabama State, which will be played at the Bill Harris Arena in Birmingham.

"With 90 percent of our team returning, the expectations should be rising," Richards said. "We had a good offseason. We put some really good work in this summer. Now we're excited about taking that next step in the season."
