BOX SCORE

INSIDE THE BOXSCORE

The win against Bowie State snapped a four game losing streak to the Bulldogs. It was the first win for the Hawks at home against BSU and the first win since 2013.

Jacquae Peart picked off Amir Hall on the first play from scrimmage and took it 36-yds for a touchdown. Marquise Baldwin picked off a pass and added five tackles. Peart added five tackles as well.

Rafiq Abdul-Wahid blocked a field goal and Aaron Bullock forced a fumble.

Bryce Witt posted 252 yards and two scores on 18-28 passing. Witt tallied 29 yards on the ground.

Tyrell Freeman led the rushing attack with 78 yards on 14 carries and two touchdowns. Imeek Watkins rushed for 48 yards on four carries and a touchdown. Watkins hauled in five catches for 79 yards.

Paul Gooden caught three passes for both of Witt's touchdowns.

Connor O'Brien led the charge defensively with 10 tackles.

HOW IT HAPPENED

First Quarter:

On the first play from scrimmage, Jacquae Peart picked off star quarterback, Amir Hall, and returned it for a touchdown to put the Hawks up 7-0 just 15 seconds into the game.

Bowie State would respond as the Hawks held the Bulldogs to a 22 yard field goal. BSU had an 81-yd pass down to the 3-yd line but the defense of Connor O'Brien, Jacquae Peart, and Marquise Baldwin held strong to force the fourth down kick.

On the next drive, Bryce Witt connected with Torry Baker for a 35-yd gain to put the ball into the redzone. Tyrell Freeman would punch it in from a yard out to push the lead to 14-3.

The Bulldogs countered with a 7-play 63 yard drive to close the gap to 14-10. On the next BSU drive, Marquise Baldwin picked off a pass at the BSU 41 to put the Hawks in great field position.

Imeek Watkins would put the ball in the endzone three plays later on a 23 yard end around for the 21-10 lead with 2:14 remaining in the quarter.

Bowie State's connection between Amir Hall and Lansana Sesay continued with a big 53-yd reception. Hall would throw a touchdown pass to bring it to within five, 21-16, before the end of the quarter.

Second Quarter:

The scoring would slow in the half as both teams had drives stall to open the quarter. Chowan put together a scoring drive with 8:15 remaining in the half as the Hawks started the drive at their own 13-yd line. Tyrell Freeman started the drive with a 14-yd run. Bryce Witt found Imeek Watkins after buying some time in the pocket for a 43-yd gain. Watkins would take the end around for a 15-yd gain to push the ball to the BSU 22. Back-to-back 11-yd rushes by Bryce Witt and Tyrell Freeman found the endzone to put the Hawks up 28-16.

Bowie State had a promising drive late in the half. The Bulldogs settled for a field goal attempt but Rafiq Abdul-Wahid blocked the attempt to keep the score 28-16.

Third Quarter:

On the first drive of the half for the Bulldogs looked promising but the Hawks were the beneficiaries off an errant snap that stalled the drive. The BSU kicker would miss a 37-yd field goal to the right.

Neither team was able to find the endzone in the quarter as the Hawks led 28-16.

Fourth Quarter:

Chowan's drive to open the quarter was fruitful as Bryce Witt found Paul Gooden wide open in the right side of the endzone to push the led to 35-16.

The Hawks' defense held firm once again to give the Hawks the ball following a 60-yd punt by the Bulldogs. Bryce Witt found Brian Hopper Jr. for a 29-yd reception to push the ball into Bulldog territory. Witt found Paul Gooden again for a short 3-yd touchdown pass to push the advantage to 42-16.

Bowie State would put a touchdown on the board late but the Chowan defense held serve keeping the Bulldogs from scoring to preserve the win.

West Virginia State Yellow Jackets Host Kentucky State Saturday for Homecoming

Yellow Jackets Host Kentucky State Saturday for Homecoming

INSTITUTE, West Virginia -- West Virginia State will be looking to even its record and build some momentum going into the second half of the season when Kentucky State visits Institute Saturday for a 1:30 p.m. kickoff at Dickerson Stadium.

A large crowd is expected for Homecoming.

"We are so excited about our Homecoming environment on Saturday," WVSU Head Coach John Pennington said. "Seeing all of the alumni and supporters of our program is inspiring."

The Yellow Jackets enter the contest with a 2-3 mark after winning 31-17 at Glenville State last weekend.

The Thorobreds come in with an 0-5 record but showed signs of progress in a 23-21 home loss to undefeated Morehouse last Saturday.

Grad transfer Faustino Saucedo will start at quarterback once again for WVSU after stepping in for injured starter Austin Hensley late in the season opener.

Saucedo is fourth in the Mountain East Conference in passing averaging 214 yards a game. He has completed 78-of-123 attempts for 1,070 yards and seven touchdowns against just three interceptions.

Kentucky State starts sophomore Jules St. Ge behind center and the first year starter is responsible for a huge portion of his squad's offense. He is 68-of-103 passing for 692 yards. St. Ge has thrown four touchdowns and tossed four interception.

He is also the team's leading rusher with 282 yards on 64 carries. The Thorobreds will be without sophomore running back Brett Sylve who ran for 146 yards in the season opener at Slippery Rock and had 167 in last year's meeting. He has not played since that first game and is not listed on this week's depth chart.

Sophomore Calil Wilkins leads the WVSU ground attack with 477 yards on 94 carries with sophomore Dylan Lucas also a threat withy 306 yards 52 attempts.

WVSU senior Tyrell Henderson has hauled in 33 passes for 537 yards, good for third in the MEC, while sophomore Zach Pate has made 26 catches for 330 yards.

Joe Stoneman with 51 total tackles, including 2.5 sacks, leads the Yellow Jacket defense along with Moises Valcarcel with 43 tackles and five pass break ups.

The visitors are averaging 17.6 points and 301.8 yards a game compared to 31.7 and 471.3 for WVSU.

"We want to go out on that field Saturday and show Yellow Jacket Nation we have a football team that plays with Passion and Pride for our great University," Pennington said. "We want to see and hear the loudest crowd in State History."

Golden Bears host Central State for Homecoming

Shade and Coleman vs. AAMU 2018FAIRFIELD, Alabama -- As fun and festive as Homecoming is at Miles, there is a degree of urgency that is associated with Saturday's football contest against Central State (4 p.m., Albert J Sloan-Alumni Stadium).

Purchase tickets

The Golden Bears, who were expected to contend for the top spot in the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Western Division, have started the season 0-5 for the first time since 1993. More importantly, last week's loss to Albany State has made Saturday's game against the Marauders a virtual must-win if Miles has any hopes of staying in contention for the SIAC crown.

Miles has never lost a Homecoming game under head coach Reginald Ruffin, a streak kept alive last season when the Golden Bears shutout Kentucky State 36-0. But Central State will look to break the streak by avenging its own Homecoming loss last year when the Golden Bears used a big fourth quarter to earn a come-from-behind win in Ohio.

This is also a must-win for Central State (2-3, 1-2 SIAC West) if it wants to keep its hopes alive for a conference title. The Marauders have alternated wins and losses this season, including a tough 24-14 home defeat against Benedict last week. While CSU has struggled scoring this season (13.8 points per game), they have allowed the second-fewest points per game in the SIAC (18.0). Linebacker Kailen Abrams is second in the league in tackles and third in tackles for loss while running back Terraris Saffold is fourth in all-purpose yards.

Miles is propelled by some of the top players in the conference. Austin Stephens leads the league in tackles and is among the top-10 in the NCAA Division II in that category. Leonard Tyree leads the conference in touchdown receptions and is second in receiving yards while quarterback Daniel Smith is fourth in passing yard and tied for third in touchdown passes.

Tickets are on sale now for $25 and can be purchased online here. They are also available for purchase through the Miles College Business Office between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. For more information on purchasing tickets, call 205.929.1714.
