ETTRICK, Virginia – The Virginia State University football team dominated the Vikings of Elizabeth City State University, 41-19, at Rogers Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
The Trojans wasted no time, getting on the board early. A 13-yard run by sophomore Demetrius Strickland (Hampton, Va.) put VSU up 7-0 at 14:21 mark in the first quarter. ECSU answered with Kedri Patterson connected with Dajuan Green for a seven-yard touchdown at the 11:26 mark. At the 9:27 mark, quarter back Cordelral Cook ran for a 16-yard touchdown to edge the Trojans 14-6 against the Vikings. Finishing out the first quarter, following Cordelral Cook connected with Johsua Harris on a two-yard pass to find his way in the end zone for a Trojans touchdown, bringing the score to 21-6.
Keeping the same momentum in the second quarter, CookB carried the ball for seven yards into the end zone bringing the score to 27-6 to close out the first half scoring for VSU. ECSU added its second touchdown at the 00:15 mark when Chase Byrum ran in the end zone for two yards. At the half, the Trojans remained in the lead, 27-12.

In the third quarter, the Trojans remained scoreless to an impressive defensive performance by the Vikings. Elizabeth City State added a touchdown on a 10-yard pass to Dajuan Greene cutting the Trojans lead 27-19. In the fourth quarter the Trojans continued to dominate the Vikings as they added two touchdowns. The first on a nine yard run by Daniel Reid at the 10:45 mark. The Trojans rounded out the competition by adding their final touchdown of the game when Cook connected with Darrell Olivier for a 21-yard pass in the end zone at the 5:32 mark, bringing the score to 41-19.
VSU finished the competition with 421 total offensive yards and were 2 of 10 on third down conversions. VSU went 5 of 6 of its PAT attempts and had a total of 171 total rushing yards and secured four rushing touchdowns.
With this win, the Trojans move to 3-2 overall, 3-0 in CIAA play and 1-0 in Northern Division play while Vikings moves to 1-3, 0-2 CIAA, and 0-1.
Individually, VSU's Demetrius Strickland finished with 62 yards on the ground while Daniel Reid had 56 yards. Cook finished with 250 passing yards going 18-of-26 and adding two touchdowns. Joshua Harris added 117 receiving yards for VSU, followed by Andre Jackson (45), Tre'Quan Reed (33) and Jemourri La Pierre (24).
Defensively, VSU was led by Dhevyn Anderson and Kurtis Brooks who all added five tackles each. Recording four tackles each for VSU were Na'Shawn Reid-Carlos, Ernest Washington, Rashard Jones and Stephen Harris.
The Trojans will next travel to Bowie, Md. to face the Bulldogs of Bowie State University on Saturday, October 13, 2018. Kickoff is slated for 1 p.m.
VSU returns home to the Rogers Stadium on Saturday, Oct. 20 to host
Northern Division rival Lincoln University. Kickoff is slated 2:00 pm where the Trojans will celebrate Homecoming 2018.
