Yellow Jackets Host Kentucky State Saturday for Homecoming

INSTITUTE, West Virginia -- West Virginia State will be looking to even its record and build some momentum going into the second half of the season when Kentucky State visits Institute Saturday for a 1:30 p.m. kickoff at Dickerson Stadium.

A large crowd is expected for Homecoming.

"We are so excited about our Homecoming environment on Saturday," WVSU Head Coach John Pennington said. "Seeing all of the alumni and supporters of our program is inspiring."

The Yellow Jackets enter the contest with a 2-3 mark after winning 31-17 at Glenville State last weekend.

The Thorobreds come in with an 0-5 record but showed signs of progress in a 23-21 home loss to undefeated Morehouse last Saturday.

Grad transfer Faustino Saucedo will start at quarterback once again for WVSU after stepping in for injured starter Austin Hensley late in the season opener.

Saucedo is fourth in the Mountain East Conference in passing averaging 214 yards a game. He has completed 78-of-123 attempts for 1,070 yards and seven touchdowns against just three interceptions.

Kentucky State starts sophomore Jules St. Ge behind center and the first year starter is responsible for a huge portion of his squad's offense. He is 68-of-103 passing for 692 yards. St. Ge has thrown four touchdowns and tossed four interception.

He is also the team's leading rusher with 282 yards on 64 carries. The Thorobreds will be without sophomore running back Brett Sylve who ran for 146 yards in the season opener at Slippery Rock and had 167 in last year's meeting. He has not played since that first game and is not listed on this week's depth chart.

Sophomore Calil Wilkins leads the WVSU ground attack with 477 yards on 94 carries with sophomore Dylan Lucas also a threat withy 306 yards 52 attempts.

WVSU senior Tyrell Henderson has hauled in 33 passes for 537 yards, good for third in the MEC, while sophomore Zach Pate has made 26 catches for 330 yards.

Joe Stoneman with 51 total tackles, including 2.5 sacks, leads the Yellow Jacket defense along with Moises Valcarcel with 43 tackles and five pass break ups.

The visitors are averaging 17.6 points and 301.8 yards a game compared to 31.7 and 471.3 for WVSU.

"We want to go out on that field Saturday and show Yellow Jacket Nation we have a football team that plays with Passion and Pride for our great University," Pennington said. "We want to see and hear the loudest crowd in State History."
