Golden Bears host Central State for Homecoming

Shade and Coleman vs. AAMU 2018FAIRFIELD, Alabama -- As fun and festive as Homecoming is at Miles, there is a degree of urgency that is associated with Saturday's football contest against Central State (4 p.m., Albert J Sloan-Alumni Stadium).

The Golden Bears, who were expected to contend for the top spot in the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Western Division, have started the season 0-5 for the first time since 1993. More importantly, last week's loss to Albany State has made Saturday's game against the Marauders a virtual must-win if Miles has any hopes of staying in contention for the SIAC crown.

Miles has never lost a Homecoming game under head coach Reginald Ruffin, a streak kept alive last season when the Golden Bears shutout Kentucky State 36-0. But Central State will look to break the streak by avenging its own Homecoming loss last year when the Golden Bears used a big fourth quarter to earn a come-from-behind win in Ohio.

This is also a must-win for Central State (2-3, 1-2 SIAC West) if it wants to keep its hopes alive for a conference title. The Marauders have alternated wins and losses this season, including a tough 24-14 home defeat against Benedict last week. While CSU has struggled scoring this season (13.8 points per game), they have allowed the second-fewest points per game in the SIAC (18.0). Linebacker Kailen Abrams is second in the league in tackles and third in tackles for loss while running back Terraris Saffold is fourth in all-purpose yards.

Miles is propelled by some of the top players in the conference. Austin Stephens leads the league in tackles and is among the top-10 in the NCAA Division II in that category. Leonard Tyree leads the conference in touchdown receptions and is second in receiving yards while quarterback Daniel Smith is fourth in passing yard and tied for third in touchdown passes.

Tickets are on sale now for $25 and can be purchased online here. They are also available for purchase through the Miles College Business Office between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. For more information on purchasing tickets, call 205.929.1714.
