Lincoln Blue Tigers Fall in Senior Day Shootout

JEFFERSON CITY, Missouri -- The two teams combined for 82 points and 878 yards, but McKendree got the better of the Lincoln football team in the season finale for both programs on Saturday (Nov. 10). Lincoln fell, 50-32, in its final game as a member of the Great Lakes Valley Conference.

It was Senior Day for the Blue Tigers, and Saint Durassaint celebrated in style, scoring on a 49-yard interception return that helped pull the Blue Tigers to within three halfway through the third quarter. Kimbo Ferguson ran the ball in for a two-point conversion that made it a 27-24 ballgame in favor of the Bearcats, but McKendree scored 23 of the game's next 31 points to secure the victory.

McKendree (6-5, 4-3 GLVC) returned the opening kickoff for a score and later converted a fumble recovery into a field goal, but Lincoln (3-8, 2-5 GLVC) closed the gap down to three when Ferguson scored on a one-yard run. Ferguson averaged 5.8 yards per carry and scored three touchdowns while gaining 157 yards on the ground.

After McKendree built a 27-7 lead, Lincoln got some momentum heading into halftime when Fernando Ramirez made a 25-yard field goal to pull LU to within 17. The Blue Tigers then scored the first two touchdowns of the second half, with Ferguson scoring on a four-yard run before Durassaint's pick-six pulled LU to within 27-24.

The Bearcats answered with a pair of touchdown drives, but the Blue Tigers got back on the board for the final time on a five-yard run from Ferguson. Henry Ogala, who completed 11 passes for 144 yards and rushed for 58 yards, ran the ball for a two-point conversion that made the score 41-32. That was as close as LU would come to completing the comeback, however, as the Bearcats forced a safety and got another touchdown to end the contest.

Tylan Oglesby also broke up a pass and recorded an interception, and Garen McKinney blocked a McKendree field goal attempt. Antonio Watts, meanwhile, registered six tackles, and Steve Henderson broke up a pass.

A'Jani Johnson finished with 78 all-purpose yards and Muhammad-Rogers had 62 kick return yards while Wolky Belancourt averaged 39.3 yards punting with a long of 49. Ramirez averaged 46.8 yards on kickoffs.

With Saturday being Senior Day, Lincoln honored Belancourt, Jamal Brown, Lorenzo Davis, Dieujuste, Durassaint, Karl Evans, Jr., Isaiah Gray, Joseph Madrigal, Nelson, Elijah Oglesby, Blake Tibbs, Franklyn Richardson, Williams and Brenton Wrigley in a halftime ceremony. It was also Heroes Weekend as the Blue Tigers honored police and highway patrol officers, EMT personnel, firefighters and active and veteran members of the military for their service.

Lincoln football will return to the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association starting in 2019.

Lincoln Improve to 2-0 with Road Win Over Arkansas-Monticello

MAGNOLIA, Arkansas - Zoi Thompson scored 25 points and Zhanesha Dickerson had a double-double as the Lincoln women's basketball team improved to 2-0 on the season with a 57-53 win over Arkansas-Monticello on Saturday (Nov. 10). The game was played at Southern Arkansas University as part of the GAC/MIAA Crossover Challenge.

Dickerson led LU with 10 rebounds and provided an assist and a steal while Thompson scored Lincoln's final seven points of the game and dished four assists. As a team, Lincoln shot .417 overall and .867 at the free throw line while Arkansas-Monticello (0-2) was held to .357 shooting from the floor.

Lincoln led 11-7 after the first period, but the Blossoms rallied to take a 19-18 advantage at halftime as well as a 40-38 edge through three quarters. The final period belonged to the Blue Tigers, however, as Lincoln shot .462 from the floor and held the Blossoms to just five buckets to secure the victory.

Tempary Gunter provided nine points and three boards to the winning cause while Alecia Kaelke added six points, five rebounds, two blocks, an assist and a steal. Alecia Gulledge contributed five points and a pair of steals, and Kiara Shoulded closed the scoring with two points and six rebounds.

Lincoln will try to start the 2018-19 season 3-0 as LU plays Stephens College in Jason Gym in its home opener on Tuesday (Nov. 13). Tip-off is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. CST.

Jackson State Defense Dominates Alabama State

MONTGOMERY, Alabama – The Jackson State football team used a suffocating defense and opportunistic offense to defeat Alabama State 20-2 Saturday afternoon in an important Southwestern Athletic Conference tilt.

The Tigers (5-4, 3-2 SWAC) held the Hornets (3-6, 2-3 SWAC) to 180 yards of total defense.

JSU jumped out to an early 10-0 first quarter lead. Christian Jacquemin converted a 39-yard field goal at 2:25 in the quarter and on the ensuing possession Ryan Theyard returned an interception back to the house.

With 24 seconds remaining in the first half, quarterback Jarrad Hayes found running back Keshawn Harper on a wheel out of the backfield and JSU went into halftime with a 17-0 lead.

Jacquemin added a second field goal at 10:23 in the fourth quarter and JSU extended its lead to 20-0.

Harper rushed for 76 yards and had two receptions for 17 yards and Quitten Brown totaled 66 yards on 23 carries.

Speedster Romello Shumake grabbed three passes for 70 yards.

Southern University Human Jukebox Marching Band participating in 2020 Rose Parade

BATON ROUGE, Louisiana -- The Human Jukebox is heading to the Rose Parade. Southern University announced on its social media pages Friday that the marching band and the Fabulous Dancing Dolls have been selected to participate in the 2020 Tournament of Roses Parade.

Taking place in Pasadena, California, and televised nationally, the Rose Parade and the Rose Bowl football game have become part of many Americans' New Year's Day traditions. Each year the parade selects around 20 university, high school and community marching bands from around the world — most are from the United States, but bands from Australia, Japan, Mexico and Canada have been featured.



The next Rose Parade takes place Tuesday, Jan. 1, 2019. Southern University's Human Jukebox Marching Band and Fabulous Dancing dolls will participate in the January 2020 Rose Parade.

NOTE: The tournament of Roses recently announced the involvement of the Alabama State University Mighty Marching Hornets and the Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University Incomparable Marching 100 marching bands for the 2019 Rose Parade. 

“When I was able to reach out to the Historically Black Colleges, it was very exciting, the opportunity to have them come and perform this year, for my year,” said Tournament of Roses President Gerald Freeny.  Freeny noted how he wanted diverse groups of bands to be part of the Rose Parade. He also mentioned how the HBCU marching bands would bring excitement to the parade.

Seeing the marching bands can inspire young viewers, showcasing how music can be a primary option for their future.

A&T In Position to Capture Another Title After Win

SAVANNAH, Georgia  – The only thing left to do for North Carolina A&T football is to finish. Thanks to another superbly effective running game that led to a 28-12 win over Savannah State Saturday afternoon at Ted Wright Stadium, the Aggies are in a position to win another Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference championship.

N.C. A&T (8-2, 5-1 MEAC) needs a win next week at arch-rival North Carolina Central, no easy task, to claim at least a share of the conference title. It would be their fourth in the past five years. A Florida A&M loss to Bethune-Cookman in the Florida Classic in Orlando coupled with an Aggies win would give the Aggies the outright title and their third Air Force Celebration Bowl Bid in four years.

There are other scenarios to where the Aggies could share the title with teams such as B-CU and S.C. State but they all involve the Aggies losing to NCCU. Of course, there are NCAA FCS playoff bid implications involved as well.

So, while the Aggies try to finish strong next week in Durham, how the Aggies are finishing games is a major concern for first-year head coach Sam Washington. Saturday’s second half against the Savannah State Tigers triggered Washington’s memory to past games where the Aggies started strong but were not as strong on the dismount.

“We’re six seconds away from being undefeated. I don’t know how many people realize that,” said Washington referring to the Aggies 16-13 loss to Morgan State on a field goal with two seconds remaining and their 22-21 loss to Florida A&M with four seconds remaining. “We have to learn how to finish football games,” Washington continued. “We come in well-prepared, but we have to put more of an emphasis on finishing.”

N.C. A&T’s 21-0 start against the Tigers Saturday was outstanding. What made it impressive was that the game against the Tigers was sandwiched in between last week’s Greatest Homecoming On Earth and next week’s heated rivalry game with NCCU. Such a scenario might leave any team susceptible to the dreaded “trap game.” But that wasn’t the case for the Aggies.

“Savannah State has been a trap for everybody,” said Washington. “There are a lot of things they do very well. That’s a good football team with a lot of good athletes.”

The Aggies are not without their share of good players. That was evident when Redshirt junior quarterback Kylil Carter started for an injured Lamar Raynard. Carter is no stranger to game action even with a first-team All-MEAC performer ahead of him on the depth chart. Carter has made several appearances this season including his orchestration of a fourth-quarter comeback in the Aggies upset win over East Carolina when Raynard left the game with an injury.

He was back in command of the offense and rushed for 93 yards and a touchdown on 14 carries.

“Kylil has been capable of starting since he’s been here. He has a very talented young man playing in front of him right now,” said Washington. “But I consider (Kylil) our finisher. He finishes off games for us when we need him to. He’s very good at managing our fourth quarters, and he has done that throughout the season. With his ability to run the football, it adds an extra something to our offense when we’re trying to run down the clock.”

As the starter, he took the Aggies 88 yards on nine plays for the game’s first score as redshirt sophomore running back Jah-Maine Martin scored on an 11-yard run. Martin contributed to the Aggies 274-yard rushing performance by adding 70 yards and a touchdown on 11 carries.

Carter set up the Aggies second touchdown with a 41-yard carry. It led to a 14-yard touchdown run from Cartwright who dashed through an enormous hole for his fifth touchdown of the season. The Aggies used a seven-yard SSU punt to close out their first-half scoring. After the punt, the Aggies took over at the SSU 15-yard line. Three plays later, Carter connected with redshirt sophomore Zachary Leslie for a 10-yard TD pass.

But for as good as all of that was, Washington had a simple message for his team after the game. “We have to play better in the second half,” he said.

N.C. A&T turned the ball over three times in the second half on two fumbles and a muffed punt. Only one of those turnovers led to a touchdown, but Washington was also displeased by the fact the Tigers also had a long scoring drive in the second half.

“What surprised me today were the turnovers,” said Washington. “Turning the ball over is something we do not allow or appreciate. It is not a part of our character.”

After SSU’s second touchdown of the second half cut the Aggies lead to 21-12 in the fourth quarter, senior William Hollingsworth started the process of putting the game away as he returned the ensuing kickoff 42 yards to the SSU 33. Carter eventually scored on a 27-yard run for a 28-12 Aggies lead with 5:14 to play.

The Aggie-Eagle rivalry will be televised for the third straight season as ESPNU will carry the game. Game time is 2 p.m. As for what is on the line, MEAC title, Celebration Bowl bid or maybe even a playoff appearance, Washington has a remedy for all anxiousness.

“One game at a time. That’ our motto,” Washington said.

Gr8ness: Nuggets win GCAC, qualify for nationals again

NEW ORLEANS — Xavier University of Louisiana scored 21 of the first 22 points Saturday and rolled to a 25-3, 25-12, 25-11 volleyball victory against Tougaloo in the championship match of the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference Tournament at SUNO's The Castle.
     
The Gold Nuggets (26-6) won the tournament for the eighth consecutive year and received the GCAC's automatic bid to the NAIA National Championship tournament, which will begin next weekend. XULA will learn of its opponent and destination Monday.
     
Tournament MVP Kayla Black led the Gold Nuggets with 17 kills. Black hit .412 in 34 attacks and had two aces and 12 digs.

No. 10 Langston Defeats OPSU 33-9, Clinches SAC Crown

LANGSTON, Oklahoma – Senior quarterback Jaylen Lowe passed for two touchdowns and ran for three as the No. 10 Langston Lions defeated the Oklahoma Panhandle State Aggies 33-9 Saturday afternoon to clinch the inaugural Sooner Athletic Conference Championship.

Lowe racked up 361 yards through the air and picked up an additional 131 yards on the ground as the Lions (9-1, 8-0 SAC) won their 21st straight conference game dating back to the 2016 season. Langston clinched the automatic bid to the NAIA Football Championship Series first round and will find out their opponent when the NAIA national office announces the tournament bracket tomorrow at 4 p.m.

"We're very excited about the back to back conference championships and now we turn out attention to the playoffs," head coach Quinton Morgan said about the team's second straight conference championship and bid to the NAIA FCS First Round. "We've been in this situation before, our goal is to stay focused, represent the SAC and to get to the national championship."

Cameron Booty led the air attack with seven receptions for 144 yards and one touchdown, Isaiah Shaputis hauled in four catches for 66 yards and Daylon Person finished with three receptions for 89 yards and one touchdown. Tim Whitfield finished second on the team in rushing with 33 yards on eight carries.

Defensively, Justin Wade anchored Langston with seven total tackles with two tackles for loss. James Cox finished with six tackles and Charles Harvin III finished with four total tackles.

"To start off in August, this was one of our main goals, it feels good to accomplish it," senior quarterback Jaylen Lowe said. "We're excited, last year's playoffs were embarrassing, and our goal is to get deep into the playoffs and make a national championship run. We're not done yet."

Langston led 13-3 at halftime but began to pull away in third quarter after Lowe scored on a 23-yard touchdown to stretch the lead to 20-3. Following a fumble recovery for a touchdown by OPSU's Diamante Pounds, Lowe tacked on another touchdown run to close out the third quarter and put Langston in front 26-9.

The final score came at the 4:48 mark in the fourth quarter when Lowe scampered his way into the endzone from 31 yards out.

Langston (9-1, 8-0 SAC) improves to 30-5 overall under head coach Quinton Morgan and clinched their second straight conference championship and playoff appearance under his tutelage.

South Carolina State Bulldogs Roll Over FAMU Rattlers 44-21

TALLAHASSEE, Florida — Redshirt sophomore quarterback Tyrece Nick had 20 carries and 138-yards, and three touchdowns to lead South Carolina State (4-5) to an, 44-21, victory over Florida A&M (6-4) Saturday (Nov. 10th) at Bragg Memorial Stadium.

"Always good when you can win on the road especially against a very good FAMU team, "said head coach Buddy Pough. " We played one of our better games tonight against more than likely the league champion this year."

"We jumped out early and that gave us a spark within our offense," said Pough. "I'm just proud of the way the guys responded with when FAMU made a run midway through to pull within a score."

The Bulldog wasted no time jumping out to a 17-0 lead early in the second quarter. Redshirt freshman running back Farrika Grier put South Carolina State on the board first on an 18-yard run at the 11:38 mark in the first quarter. Freshman kicker Dillon Bredesen's 33-yard field goal with 4:18 left push the lead 10-0.

Nick scored on his first touchdown of the day on a 5-yard punch at with 12:05 mark early in the second quarter. FAMU responded off a 15-yard run by junior running back Deshawn Smith to make the score 17-7 midway through the half. The Bulldogs answered to boost the lead to a commanding 24-7 lead on a 2-yard run by Nick.

A solid effort by the Rattlers offense put them in scoring position to close out the first-half on a 3-yard score by Ricky Henrilus to narrow the gap to two scores. South Carolina State led FAMU 24-14 during intermission.

The second-half opened up for the Rattlers when Smith found the end zone again for his second score on a 47-yard scamper with 7:30 left in the third quarter. Freshman running back and return specialist Tayshawn Baines turned the whole momentum of the game off an 88-yard kickoff return for a touchdown to close out the scoring drive late in the third quarter.

South Carolina State took total control with back-to-back touchdown runs of 3-yards and 2 by Nick and sophomore running Jarius Jenkins to give the Bulldogs a 44-21 over Florida A&M.

Baines finished with seven (7) returns for 127-yards and a touchdown, while senior punter Jerome Pettiway had a solid day punting with four (4) punts for188-yards with an average 47.0 yards per punt and a long of 66-yards to lead the special teams.

Nick threw 5-of-11-1 for 90-yards and redshirt freshman running back Omar Cummings had nine (9) rushes for 66-yards on the offense. Senior defensive back Chris Adams spearheaded the defense with a team-high seven tackles and Cornelius Walker, Alex Brown and Jaylen Evans all added five tackles each in the win.

FAIRFIELD, Alabama -- After Miles opened conference play with a loss at Albany State on Sept. 29, the Golden Bears were 0-5, had lost three games by 10 total points, and were watching their season slowly go down the drain.

But Miles bounced back, winning three games inside the final minute to win the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Western Division and get one more shot at the Golden Rams. This time, the Golden Bears left no doubt that they were, indeed, the best team.

Justin Hardy rushed for 128 yards and three touchdowns, Daniel Smith threw two touchdown passes to DeionTray Fagin and the Golden Bears forced three turnovers and turned them into touchdowns in the second half as Miles won the SIAC title with a 50-23 beatdown of Albany State in front of 5,461 at Sloan-Alumni Stadium. The conference championship was the third for the Golden Bears (5-6) under coach Reginald Ruffin, and all have come against the Golden Rams (7-4).

The 50 points were the most scored by Miles this season and the most in a game by the Golden Bears since a 51-0 win over Lane in 2014. It was the second most points scored in the eight SIAC title tilts, trailing on the 55 scored by Tuskegee in 2012.

Miles scored on its opening drive when Hardy finished a 10-play, 75-yard drive with a 10-yard run for a 7-0 lead. He would score again on a 2-yard run in the second quarter and two Jackson Spradlin field goals (26 and 43 yards) helped give the Golden Bears a 20-17 lead at the half.

But the game broke open in the third quarter and Albany State contributed to its own demise. On the second play of the third quarter, C.J. McClelland picked off Golden Rams quarterback Kelias Williams and returned it to the Albany State 20. Three minutes later, Smith threw a bullet to Fagin through two Golden Rams defenders for an 11-yard touchdown to push the score to 27-17. On the third play of the ensuing drive, Jamari Smith forced a fumble that was recovered by Jaylun Thomas. Miles would then go 68 yards on nine plays, with Smith (21-of-32, 238 yards passing, 61 yards rushing) hitting Fagin on a 2-yard pass for another touchdown and with 7:06 left in the third, the score was 34-17.

The Golden Rams could not make it happen on its next drive and turned it over on downs and Miles answered with a 33-yard field goal from Spradlin. On the ensuing kickoff, Christian Mays forced a McKinley Habersham fumble that was recovered by Sidney Wilson. Five plays later, Hardy scored on a 10-yard run and the Golden Bears began to celebrate as they had opened a 43-17 lead with 10:42 remaining.

Backup quarterback Brandon Pearson would finally get Albany State back in the scoring column with a 20-yard touchdown pass to Javon Wooten with 6:28 to go. But Miles would put the icing on its championship cake with a 9-yard scoring run by Mays for the final margin.

Big Defensive Plays Lift GSU past AAMU

HUNTSVILLE, Alabama | Joseph McWilliams and Devanir Martin returned interceptions for touchdowns as the Grambling State University football team won its third straight game on Saturday afternoon, 29-16, against Alabama A&M in a non-conference game at Louis Crews Stadium.

"We played well today, but we have some things we need to improve on," Grambling State head coach Broderick Fobbs said. "Alabama A&M is a good football team and is extremely well coached. I thought defensively we played well and were extremely aggressive today. Now we get a week off to get some players healthy before the Bayou Classic."

The Bulldogs (5-5) took the opening kickoff and marched 75 yards in 11 plays, taking nearly four-and-half minutes off the clock, as Aqeel Glass connected with Marceles Class for a 6-yard touchdown pass to give Alabama A&M an early 7-0 advantage with 10:34 left in the first.

Grambling State (6-4), on its first drive of the day, moved the ball to inside the Alabama A&M 5, but came away with just three points. The Tigers, aided by Geremy Hickbottom going 4 of 6 passing on the drive, marched 73 yards in 15 plays, but could not punch the ball into the end zone as Marc Orozco kicked a 21-yard field goal to cut the margin to 7-3 with 3:53 left in the opening quarter.

On the next offensive possession for Alabama A&M, Glass was picked off by Danquarian Fields. The Tigers used a fake punt to get into Bulldog territory, but costly penalties forced a Tiger punt.

On 2nd-and-seven from the Bulldog 18, Glass was picked off by Joseph McWilliams, who ran 20 yards untouched into the endzone to give the Tigers a 10-7 lead with 11:20 left in the first half.

Alabama A&M quickly answered as the Bulldogs went 46 yards in nine plays and settled for a 21-yard Corey Spencer field goal, tying the game at 10 with 8:15 remaining in the second.

Grambling State needed almost two minutes to retake the lead as Hickbottom connected with Devante Davis down the right sideline for a 39-yard touchdown as Grambling State grabbed a 17-10 advantage with 6:23 left in the quarter.

After both teams traded punts in the third, the Tigers marched 51 yards in seven plays as Orozco booted a 26-yard field goal to extend the advantage to 20-10 with 3:43 remaining in the quarter.

On the very next offensive possession for Alabama A&M, Glass was picked off by Devanir Martin, who went 35 yards to the endzone as Grambling State pushed the lead to 27-10 with 2:51 left in the third.

Alabama A&M tried to close the gap late as Dylan Smith rushed 10 yards for the score to trim the margin to 27-16 with 5:32 left. The PAT attempt by Spencer was blocked and McWilliams went all the way for the two point conversation as GSU led 29-16.

GSU trailed 7-3 early in the second quarter, but that changed with a pick six. Aqeel Glass' pass was picked off by Joseph McWilliams, his fourth in five games, and the junior defensive back went 20 yards untouched to give the Tigers a 10-7 lead.

In the third quarter with the Tigers ahead, 20-10, Glass was picked off by Devanir Martin, who went 35 yards into the end zone and extended the lead to 27-10.

BALTIMORE, Maryland -- Morgan State did what they had to do on a cold and windy day at Hughes Stadium. They protected a slim lead, played solid defense and ran the ball.

Junior running back Joshua Chase ran 18 times for a career-high 145 yards and the game's lone touchdown, helping the Bears grind out a 9-0 victory over Delaware State on Saturday, snapping a three-game losing streak.

It also marked the Bears first shutout since a 12-0 win against Delaware State on October 24, 2011.

With 8:30 to play before halftime, Chase broke free for a 75-run and Morgan State (3-7, 2-4 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) made it hold up defensively limiting Delaware State to 182 total yards.

Keenan Black and Jack McDaniels both played at quarterback for Delaware State (2-8, 2-5) and combined to complete 11 of 28 passes for 117 yards. The Hornets ran the ball 37 times and were limited to 65 yards rushing -- a 1.8 yards-per-carry average.

Redshirt freshman quarterback DJ Golatt Jr. made his first start of the season. He completed 9 of 23 passes for 113 yards and was intercepted in the third quarter.

MSU's running game was center stage today due to the windy conditions. The Bears' ground game racked up 253 of the Bears' 366 total offensive yards. David Adeleke had 58 yards on 10 carries, while Golatt added 25 yards on the ground.

The Bears now have won nine of the last 11 meetings against Delaware State since 2008, including eight straight.

Senior linebacker Damare' Whitaker led the MSU defense with seven solo tackles. Redshirt junior Rico Kennedy posted five tackles, 3.0 for loss, with a pair of sacks, and quarterback hurry. Ian McBorrough had four stops and a fumble recovery.

Morgan State concludes its 2018 schedule next Saturday with a 1 p.m. game at Norfolk State.

Carter's 3 TDs, Stout Defense Spark NSU to 29-17 Win over Howard

NORFOLK, Virginia – Juwan Carter threw three touchdown passes and the Norfolk State defense held a potent Howard offense in check in a 29-17 Spartan victory on Saturday at Dick Price Stadium.

Carter passes for 256 yards and three scoring passes to three different receivers to help NSU (4-5, 2-4 MEAC) snap its four-game losing streak. The Spartans, who amassed a season-high 439 total yards, also used a balance ground game to run for a season-best 178 yards. The NSU defense, meanwhile, limited the MEAC's top offense to its fewest points and total yards (273) against a conference opponent this season.



Howard (4-5, 4-3) scored on the game's first drive on a 39-yard touchdown pass from Caylin Newton to Jequez Ezzard just 1:59 into the game. The teams then traded field goals, with NSU's Josh Nardone hitting a 38-yarder and Faraji Joseph making a 30-yarder later in the opening quarter as Howard held a 10-3 edge after one stanza.

But the Spartans scored on a pair of Carter touchdown passes in the second quarter to take the lead. First, Carter flipped a short pass to running back Cameryn Brent, who outraced the defense for a 15-yard scoring play to tie the game at the 13:29 mark of the second quarter.

NSU took the lead going into the half by perfectly executing its two-minute offense. Carter capped a nine-play, 80-yard TD drive with a 16-yard TD pass to Isaiah Winstead with six seconds left in the half. Nardone's PAT was blocked, keeping NSU's lead at 16-10 heading into the intermission.

Howard briefly retook the lead on an 11-yard TD run by Newton with 8:38 left in the third quarter. The possession was set up by Devin Hurtado's interception of Carter off a tipped pass.

But the Spartans answered quickly with a nine-play drive, which Nardone capped with a 27-yard field goal with 3:19 remaining in the period.

Nardone extended the lead to 22-17 with a 31-yard field goal with 11:16 left in the game. After the Spartan defense forced Howard to punt, the Spartans went ahead by two scores on a 37-yard TD pass from Carter to Marcus Taylor with 4:40 left to play. That capped an eight-play, 60-yard march which took five minutes off the clock.

On the first play of the next possession, NSU cornerback J.T. Wahee stepped in front of a Newton pass and intercepted it, all but ending the Bison's chances.

Carter completed 23-of-35 passes and hit nine different receivers. Winstead (six catches) and Taylor (five) both had 74 receiving yards and a score. Four Spartans had at least 40 rushing yards: Aaron Savage led the way with 53, followed by Gerald Hulett with a season-high 51, Carter with 41 and Brent with 40.

Freshman linebacker Marquis Hall led the NSU defense with a career-high 12 tackles, including a half-tackle for loss. Nigel Chavis posted nine tackles, 2.5 for loss, with one sack, a forced fumble and three quarterback hurries. Wahee and Bobby Price both recorded an interception and a pass breakup.

The Spartan defense forced Newton into a tough day through the air, as the Bison quarterback completed just 10-of-24 passes for a season-low 129 yards with two interceptions.

NSU concludes its home schedule next Saturday with a 1 p.m. game against Morgan State on First Responders and Military Appreciation Day. It is also Senior Day for the Spartan football team.

SALEM, Virginia -- From the opening kick-off the Bowie State Bulldogs never looked back claiming their first CIAA Football Championship in a 30-10 rout of Fayetteville State on a blistering afternoon in Salem Stadium.

Bowie State's Amir Hall won Nationwide Most Valuable Player with four total touchdowns with 180 yards passing and 139 yards rushing.  Hall tied a CIAA Championship record three rushing touchdowns.

Stevie Green of Fayetteville State was Nationwide MVP for the Broncos after posting 135 yards rushing.

HOW IT HAPPENED
First Quarter:
Bowie State gained the momentum early as the Bulldogs forced a fumble on the opening kick-off.  The Bulldogs started the drive at the Fayetteville State 25 yard line.  Chrishon Springs recorded a tackle for loss before forcing a turnover on downs.

Fayetteville State's Stevie Green tallied four rushes on the drive for 21 yards before the Bulldogs forced a punt.

Bowie State methodically moved the ball down the field following the punt on a 13 play 87-yard drive to score the opening touchdown of the contest.  Amir Hall completed 4-5 passes for 40 yards on the drive before calling his own number from 14 yards out.  Gene Carson added the extra point for the early 7-0 with 3:11 remaining in the quarter.

Fayetteville State was unable to get the offense moving as BSU's Oluwaleke Ajenifuja forced the strip sack and the recovery to give the Bulldogs' offense the ball at the 19-yd line.  Amir Hall posted his second rushing touchdown of the contest on a 6-yd scamper to give the Bulldogs a 14-0 lead.

The Bulldogs defense would force their third turnover of the quarter as Thomas Riddick picked off Collyn Anderson's pass.

Second Quarter:
Bowie State was unable to convert on fourth-and-seven to hand the ball back to Fayetteville State.  Stevie Green gave the Broncos some momentum with a 20-yd rush to take the ball to midfield.  Stevie Green continued to carry the offense breaking two tackles on a swing pass for 18-yds.  The Broncos would get on the board with 8:13 remaining in the quarter with a 28-yd field goal by David Lamb.

The teams would settle in during the middle of the quarter before Amir Hall broke off an 80-yd run to put the Bulldogs up 21-3 with 3:55 remaining in the half.

The half would close with Bowie State leading Fayetteville State 21-3 as the Broncos would commit their fourth turnover in the contest as Oluwake Ajenifuja recovered a fumble to end the drive.

Third Quarter:
Bowie State would set up shop after Jordan Crockett gave the Bulldogs excellent field position following the second half kick-off.  Amir Hall would connect with Montez Clay and Lansana Sesay on the drive to break the all-time CIAA passing yards record.  The Bulldogs would settle for the chip-shot field goal to extend their lead to 24-3.

After a punt by the Broncos, Bowie State continued to extend their lead to 30-3 as Amir Hall found Daryl Jasper on the post pattern for the 13-yd touchdown.  Fayetteville State's Brandon Smith would block the extra point.

Taylor Johnson for Bowie State would force a punt after sacking Collyn Anderson on third-and-long.

Fourth Quarter:
Amir Hall found Maurice Williams on a screen pass for 39-yards before being stopped inside the five yard line.  FSU's defense led by Xavier Thompson forced an interception on fourth down in the endzone. 

On the first play of the drive, Stevie Green broke off a 55-yd run to put the Broncos in Bowie State territory.  Donshel Jetton rushed for 23-yds to put Fayetteville State inside the redzone.  Xeavier Bullock led the Broncos to a scoring drive with a 6-yd touchdown pass to Brandon Person-Boyd in the back of the endzone. David Lamb converted the extra point to close the gap to 30-10 with 9:45 remaining in the contest.

Collyn Anderson looked to mount one final scoring drive for the Broncos starting the drive with a 26-yd quarterback keeper with 3:53 remaining in the contest.  Penalties would stall the drive as Anderson's pass to Jalen Gavin was not enough on fourth down.

Bowie State would wrap up the contest in victory formation. The Bulldogs are were ranked 4th in the NCAA D2 Region 2 Super Region Poll coming into the conference championship game and will receive an official invitation to post season play on Sunday (November 11th) when the NCAA Selection show airs at 5 p.m. (ET) on www.NCAA.com.

West Virginia State Yellow Jackets Close Out Second Straight Winning Season With Win

INSTITUTE, West Virginia -- It was a cold and clear day in Institute Saturday.

In some ways that also describes the Yellow Jackets' performance on the way to a 45-25 win over visiting West Virginia Wesleyan that earned WVSU a 6-5 record for the second straight season.

The WVSU players had a clear mission and were very cold in their execution of what needed to be done to complete that mission.

"They passed their final exam," Head Coach John Pennington said. "We've had a lot of trouble controlling our emotions the last two years and we had to block out all of the distractions and execute today."

The Bobcats took a 6-0 lead on a 42-yard pass at the 11:11 mark of the first half but the Yellow Jackets responded with a four-play, 67-yard drive to go ahead 7-6 on their next possession. Dant'e Jones capped the drive with a 30-yard scamper.

WVSU closed out the first quarter with a 65-yard pass from Faustino Saucedo to Dakotah Booth to move the lead to 14-6.

Wesleyan refused to fold though as they scored on a short pass to make the score 14-12.

All four of the Bobcats' touchdowns on the day would come on passes as the WVSU defense limited the visitors to just 80 yards on the ground. Meanwhile the Jackets ran for 337. The teams finished almost dead even in passing yards with WVSU coming out slightly ahead at 287 to 276.

The Yellow Jackets finished with a season high 624 yard of total offense.

After the teams traded scores the Yellow Jackets took a 24-18 lead in halftime.

WVSU took the second half kickoff and went 72 yards in 10 plays to move the lead to 31-18 but Wesleyan again answered.

This time the Bobcats went 80 yards in just four plays to pull to within one score again at 31-25 with 8:49 to go in the third.

The Wesleyan defense then stopped the Yellow Jackets a yard short on fourth down.

That would be the final highlight for the visitors though.

Senior linebacker Moises Valcarcel forced a fumble after the Bobcats completed a pass to their 43. Dustin Crouser picked up the loose ball and zig-zagged his way to the Wesleyan one.

Dylan Lucas ran it in on the next play and WVSU had a two score advantage. The Yellow Jackets added an insurance score midway through the fourth quarter when Saucedo hit A.J. Barrette on a 69 yard scoring strike.

Saucedo finished his final game in a West Virginia State uniform with 287 yards and two touchdowns on 18-of-30 passing.

Freshman Carl Garmon ran for 202 yards on 22 carries making him the first WVSU back to go over 200 in a game since 2006.

Jones added 102 on 10 carries. Barrette had 127 receiving yards on six catches with Tyrell Henderson adding 59 on seven receptions.

NASHVILLE, Tennessee --- Tennessee State fell in their return to Hale Stadium on Saturday afternoon. The Tigers fell 34-7 to No. 8 Jacksonville State in front of 6,718 fans. TSU fell to 3-5 on the season, 2-4 in Ohio Valley Conference play, while JSU improved to 8-2, 7-1 in conference play.

JSU scored touchdowns on their first four possessions of the first half to take a 27-7 lead into the locker room. The Gamecocks totaled 232 yards in the first quarter and ended the half with 330 yards.

The Tigers scored on a pair of long distant runs. Te’kendrick Roberson broke through with a 58 yard touchdown run in the first quarter only to be topped by Shawn McColley in the fourth. The redshirt freshman went for a team season best 70 yards with 7:46 remaining in the game. The scoring runs were the first of the two runners TSU career.

The Gamecocks took advantage of three interceptions, returning two for touchdowns.

McColley led all rushers with 93 yards on seven carries, followed by Roberson at 68 yards on 10 touches.

Micheal Hughes finished 15-of-29 for 164 yards, while JSU quarterback Zerrick Cooper went 20-of-30 for 272 yards and three touchdowns.

FIRST QUARTER

• Jacksonville State jumped out to a 13-0 lead with touchdowns on its first two possessions.
• On their second drive, the Tigers used three plays to cut into the Gamecocks advantage.
• After a Micheal Hughes eight yard, first down completion to Chris Rowland the Big Blue broke off its longest touchdown run of the season.
• Te’kendrick Roberson broke through the right side of the line and out raced the defenders 58 yards for his first career touchdown as a Tiger.
• The six point deficit was short lived as JSU marched 92 yards on 13 plays to make the score 20-7.
• The Gamecocks outgained the Tigers 232-92 in the first 15 minutes. 

SECOND QUARTER

• JSU added another score on their first possession of the quarter to increase the lead to 27-7.
• The Tigers forced their first stop of JSU leaving 4:15 on the clock.
• TSU used the running game to gain a first down before Hughes found Rowland for a 22 yard gain.
• The junior wide receiver caught the ball on the far sideline and maneuvered his way into the clearing to move the Tigers to the 44 yard line.
• Shawn McColley used a pair of runs to move the Big Blue into JSU territory.
• TSU moved deeper into the Gamecocks territory as a defensive holding penalty was added to a Hughes seven yard run.
• On the following play, Hughes completed a 20 yard pass to Steven Newbold, one yard short of the goal line.
• The Gamecocks stood tall as the forced a sack on the final play of the half to keep the score at 27-7.
• TSU outgained JSU, 110-98, in the second period. 

THIRD QUARTER

• The Tigers opened the second half with a drive to the Gamecocks two yard line.
• Hughes completed a 17 yard pass to Rowland and an 11 yarder to Al-Malik Moore to go along with a pair of JSU penalties to move to the Gamecocks 12.
• Hughes teamed with Rowland for nine yards to the three.
• Two plays later, the drive ended as Hughes tossed his fifth interception of the year.
• The Tiger defense kept JSU off the board on the next drive, forcing a 35 yard field goal attempt.
• The kick went off the left upright, keeping the score at 27-7.
• JSU outgained TSU 65-59. 

FOURTH QUARTER

• Jeremiah Caine opened the final stanza with his second sack of the game.
• The Caine play led to a punt, giving the Tigers the ball with 12:19 remaining in the game.
• JSU put a damper on TSUs effort for a comeback with an interception returned for a touchdown, making the score 34-7.
• Later in the quarter, Jacksonville State recorded its second pick-six of the game increasing the lead to 41-7.
• On the Tigers next play from scrimmage, Shawn McColley broke through the middle of the line and sprinted 70 yards for the longest run for the Tigers this season.
• TSU outgained the Gamecocks 81-25 in the final quarter.

Lions Move On to NAIA Football National Championship Series

Edward Waters Crushes Rival Florida Memorial

JACKSONVILLE, Florida -- In front of a near capacity crowd Friday evening at the Adams-Jenkins Community Sports & Music Complex, Edward Waters (3-3) played arguably its most complete game of the young season in a 91-62 dominating victory over archrival Florida Memorial (1-3). The 91 points is the highest point output for an EWC team since the 2016-17 season, when the Tigers scored 90 in a home victory over conference foe Talladega.

The visitors from Miami Gardens led by as much as four points at the beginning of the contest, but after that, Edward Waters went on a tear both inside the paint and from the perimeter. The Tigers connected on a season-high 11 three-pointers on the night, outshooting the Lions 45.5% to 38.3%. Edward Waters also picked things up on the defensive end, forcing 16 FMU turnovers, while only committing a season low five of their own.

Just four days after scoring 30 points in EWC's victory over Warner, Jontavius Littles went on another scoring tear, leading a quartet of Tigers in double figures. The Jacksonville native scored a game-high 23 points on 10-of-15 shooting, and went 3-of-5 from three-point range. Both Will Ibeh and Markel Williams had 16 points a piece for the Tigers, and Harlan Williams, Jr. had 14 points off of the bench for EWC as well.

Florida Memorial was led by Jordan Collins with 11 points and Jordan Martin with 10.

EWC will travel across town to face North Florida in an exhibition game on Wednesday, November 14th. Tip-off from the UNF Arena is set for 7:00pm and the game will be carried via the EWC Sports Network. Dillard Holds On Late To Knock Off Wiley Wildcats, 79-73

NEW ORLEANS, Louisiana -- Playing in her last homecoming game of her career, Adriiana Jackson made sure to go out on top as she led (RV) Dillard to a 79-73 victory against Wiley College on Friday night in Dent Hall.

SALEM, Virginia – The 2018 Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Volleyball Championship Semi-Finals were held November 9, 2018 at the Salem Civic Center. Two teams swept their matches to claim stakes in the championship finals: the Trojans of Virginia State University and Lady Bears of Shaw University.
 
All-Conference Awards
 
The No. 1 North Virginia State edged No. 2 South Fayetteville State in three tight matches: 25-18, 25-21, and 25-16.  Leading the match in scoring were Trojans Kennedi Cannon and Jailyn Ivy, who earned 11 kills each. For the Broncos, Diamond Holmes took charge earning 8 kills while teammate Chynna Hunt added 7 to FSU’s efforts. Fayetteville State completed their season 15-12 overall.
 
Prior to the VSU vs. FSU 5:00 PM semi-finals match, the CIAA awarded Volleyball Coach of the Year to Broncos Head Coach Reeshemah Johnson.
 
During the 7:00 PM semi-finals match, the No. 1 South Shaw Lady Bears and No. 3 South Winston-Salem State Rams went head-to-head to compete for an appearance in the championship title match. Shaw set the pace and prevailed over Winston-Salem State in a 3-0 set sweep: 25-23, 25-23, and 25-22.
 
Shaw’s Keveesha Wattley led the match with 14 kills and 2 blocks while WSSU’s Danyale Berry finished close behind with 13 kills and 7 digs. Defensively Lady Bears’ pair Michelle Olmeda-Gonzalez and Karla Sosa dominated with 8 digs each. The Rams conclude their season 16-15 overall.
 
The Shaw Lady Bears and Virginia State Trojans will meet tomorrow at 7:00 PM at Salem Civic Center to battle for the conference championship title. The event is free and will stream live on TheCIAASN.com.
