Grambling, Louisiana -- Doug Williams wasn't quite as confident as D.J. Williams when he saw his son change the final play call of Grambling's 30-24 victory Saturday at the line of scrimmage.
The Tigers had broken the huddle planning to run the ball, play conservatively and set up a Zoltan Riazzo field goal — until D.J. saw single coverage on receiver Mario Louis. The freshman quarterback said he knew Louis would come down with the ball, but the veteran coach was a bit more nervous.
"You stand on the sidelines and you saw him change the play, and I'm sayin', 'What are you doing?'" the coach said. "We always tell 'em all the time, 'Be football players.' We always talk about instincts. I'm gonna give credit to Mario and D.J. and the offensive line."
D.J. took the final two snaps against the Delta Devils after sophomore Frank Rivers completed 14 of his 23 passes for 211 yards and two touchdowns, both to Louis.

FAMU focused on winning the final 3 games
But that didn't seem to be a concern for coach Joe Taylor following a 27-24 victory over South Carolina State. His players know there is too much at stake to become lackadaisical in their bid to run the table and have some say-so in determining who wins the MEAC title.
"These guys have turned the corner," he said. "If we keep doing what we're supposed to do we'll be OK." The Rattlers played pretty well on Saturday at Dawson Stadium when they snapped eight seasons of losing to the Bulldogs.

Southern Jaguars thin for Alcorn State

SALISBURY, North Carolina — Amid all the distractions and confusion surrounding Homecoming 2011 Saturday at Alumni Stadium, Livingstone’s football team made something perfectly clear. The Blue Bears can, indeed, play competitive football.
“It would have been nice to end it on a positive note,” said nose tackle Michael Haygood, one of eight seniors honored before LC fell 17-7 to Fayetteville State in its home finale. “But for all the guys coming back, this should be a spark for the rest of the year. It was a well-put effort.”

Fairfield, Alabama - In front of a homecoming crowd of 13, 613, the Miles College Golden Bears beat the Lane College Dragons handily, 37-3, at Albert Sloan-Alumni Stadium in Fairfield, AL.
Miles scored first midway through the first quarter when David Thomas hit Antonio Pitts for a 25-yard touchdown pass.
Midway through the second quarter, Lane would score their only points of the game on a 38-yard field goal by Ryan Bullock.
The Golden Bears would then score 30 unanswered points the rest of the way, including three touchdowns passes and a touchdown run by David Thomas. The scoring onslaught also included a Patton Chambers also added a 38-yard field goal in the second quarter.

WSSU Rams cruise 59-7 over Edward Waters to stay unbeaten
Winston Salem, North Carolina -- Winston-Salem State overwhelmed yet another opponent on Saturday. This time it was Edward Waters as the Rams rolled to a 59-7 win in front of about 5,000 at sunny Bowman Gray Stadium.
The Rams, ranked 11th, improved to 8-0 and have a chance to move into the top 10 on the NCAA Division II poll, thanks to an offense that scored seven touchdowns in its first nine series. The Rams are 8-0 for the first time since 1978.
"The guys really came out and were ready to play," coach Connell Maynor of the Rams said. "I thought they were focused and we jumped on them early."

St. Aug's christens new complex with win; JCSU 15, SAC 34
RALEIGH, North Carolina -- Saint Augustine's College couldn't have wished for a better day to open its George Williams Athletic Complex. Not even a 15-minute delay waiting for the paramedics to arrive - a must-have for any college sporting event - could spoil the festivities.And, like any good homecoming host, the Falcons sent the guest crowd away happy with a 34-15 win over Johnson C. Smith Saturday before an overflow crowd of 5,100.
"The president [Dianne Boardley Suber] stressed to us that it was on us today," St. Aug's quarterback Teddy Bacote said. "This was big. We knew we would play a very good team, and we needed to finish out and play 60 minutes." Bacote did his part, completing 21 of 39 passes for 183 yards and two touchdowns. And so did the offensive line, which didn't allow a sack.

VSU's Lyde scores 3 TDs in win over Lincoln (Pa.)
West Grove, Pennsylvania -- Senior, running back Antwain Lyde rushed for 129 total yards and scored 3 touchdowns in a 21-16 road victory for the Trojans of Virginia State University over the Lions of Lincoln University on Saturday, Oct 22 in West Grove, PA.
The Trojans snapped a two game road losing streak and improved their overall record to 4-4 and 3-3 in the CIAA conference with a great victory over the Lions. VSU held the Lions to 51 total rushing yards but allowed 316 total passing yards. The Trojans committed no offensive turnovers, forced a fumble on defense, and also blocked an extra point attempt.
After an early touchdown score by Lincoln's offense, VSU's Antwain Lyde broke out for a season long 48 yard touchdown score to tie the ball game up at 7-7. Lyde led the Trojans with 31 rushes for a total of 129 yards with 3 touchdowns.

Chowan Hawks Use Potent Passing Attack to Defeat Shaw, 34-32
MURFREESBORO, North Carolina – Kevin Hodrick and Robert Holland each caught one touchdown and had over 100 yards receiving as the Chowan University Hawks defeated the Shaw University Bears in thrilling fashion on Saturday, 34-32. In front of a Homecoming crowd, Hawks quarterback Cameron Stover threw for 374 yards and four touchdowns to torch the Shaw defense, who entered tonight's action allowing a CIAA-best 92.3 passing yards per game. DaKorion DeSamme recorded two interceptions in a 29 second span, one of which was returned for a touchdown.
Chowan, who had never beaten Shaw before tonight, improves to 2-6 overall and picks up their first CIAA win of the season (1-4). Shaw, the two-time defending CIAA champions, falls to 2-6 overall and 2-3 in CIAA play.
“We have faced some adversity this year and to our guys' credit, they competed tonight,” said Head Coach Tim Place. “We showed up today. They competed for 60 minutes and that's all we can ask.”
The Bears struck first in an action packed first quarter. Following a Chowan fumble on their opening play from scrimmage, Shaw took over at the CU 11 yard line. Two plays later, Frederick Holliday rushed for a five yard touchdown to give the Bears a 7-0 lead just 2:32 into the contest. Holliday led the Bears' rushing attack with 100 yards on 24 carries.
Chowan did not wait long to respond. The Hawks forced a three-and-out on Shaw's next possession and took over on the Shaw 32 yard line. Stover found a wide open Sherman Ratliff on the first play of the drive to tie the game at seven.
Reigning CIAA Quarterback of the Week Quinshon Odom led the Bears on a five play, 71 yard drive midway through the quarter to answer the Hawks' score. Odom was 3-3 through the air on the drive, throwing for 60 yards. He found Malik Cross for a 49 yard touchdown pass with 7:03 remaining in the quarter.

Elizabeth City Claims CIAA Crown with 23-12 Win over BSU
Elizabeth City, North Carolina -- Elizabeth City State University (ECSU) Vikings laid claim to the CIAA Northern Division title, defeating Bowie State University (BSU) Bulldogs 23-12 on Oct. 22. The loss eliminates Bowie State from a chance at playing in the conference championship game, and evens their record at 4-4 overall and 3-3 in the CIAA.Bowie State totaled 374 yards on offense, including 204 rushing yards and 170 passing, while Elizabeth City State accumulated only 314 yards of total offense, 219 rushing and 95 passing. But the Bulldogs, the CIAA’s most-penalized team, shot themselves in the foot again as they were flagged 12 times for 82 yards. Elizabeth City State was not immune from the penalty bug either, penalized 10 times for 84 yards.

Bowie State football team suffers loss
The Elizabeth City State football scored two fourth-quarter touchdowns and notched a 23-12 victory against Bowie State on Saturday in Elizabeth City, N.C. With the win, Elizabeth City State (6-2 overall, 4-1 league) clinched the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association North Division title. The loss eliminated Bowie State (4-4, 3-3) as a contender for a spot in the CIAA title game.
Bowie State outgained the Vikings in total offensive yardage, 374-314. But the Bulldogs were penalized 12 times for 82 yards. The Bulldogs got field goals of 38 and 27 yards from Michael Gagne in the first and third quarters and trailed 10-6 heading into the fourth quarter.

WAYCROSS, Georgia -- When Brandon Hamilton stepped off the Albany State bus in Waycross on Saturday, everything was telling him it wasn't going to be his day. He was worn out. His legs felt tight. He was simply unsure of himself. "I thought I was going to struggle," Hamilton said after the SIAC East Division showdown with Clark Atlanta.But then kick by perfect kick, the sophomore from Atlanta gained confidence, putting the Rams and their struggling offense on his back and leading them to a 19-13 victory by hitting all four of his field goal attempts.
That's right -- it was ASU's kicking game and a strong defensive performance that kept the Rams (6-2, 4-1) undefeated in the division and in the driver's seat for a trip to next month's inaugural SIAC Championship game.
"What a good day for our kickers," ASU coach Mike White said about Hamilton, punter Luke Jones and PAT specialist Tory Torstenson.

Kentucky State Thorobreds ends 14-year drought vs. Tuskegee
Frankfort, Kentucky -- Kentucky State’s senior class had never beaten Tuskegee University in football. Neither had the classes of 2011, 2010, 2009 … The Thorobreds ended 14 years of frustration Saturday, defeating the Golden Tigers 20-0 at Alumni Stadium.“It was big,” KSU senior quarterback Jerrel Noland said of the win. “We’re still in the race for the division to get into the championship. “With Tuskegee being in the same division as us, we had to have this,” he added. “It was a key win from a team aspect.” The Thorobreds improve to 5-3 overall and are 2-3 in the SIAC.
“We played very well,” KSU coach Wayne Dickens said, “and we were operating with a hindrance. We couldn’t go outside Wednesday or Thursday because of the weather. All we could do was walk through situations in the gym.
“It’s a great win. Kentucky State hadn’t beaten Tuskegee in a long time, and to be able to come out here at home and do it is big.”

In a back-and-forth battle, the Tigers took a 31-29 lead with 3:53 left to play when Justin Shaw forced a fumble by Thomas Williams and scooped up the loose ball and sprinted 73 yards for the go-ahead touchdown.
Derrick Hector returned the ensuing kickoff 32 yards to the Benedict 48-yard line. Then, facing a fourth-and-six at the Benedict 32-yard line, Morehouse quarterback Byron Ingram completed a seven-yard pass to Hector. With the Maroon Tigers facing another critical third-and-13 at the 28, Ingram rushed for a 17-yard pickup on the quarterback keeper. A pair of incomplete passes saw the Maroon Tigers facing another third down and the clock winding down. The Maroon Tigers opted for a running play, apparently trying to set up for a potential game-winning field goal, but instead Carter scooted around the corner and made his way into the right corner of the end zone.

Jackson siblings lead Xavier to sixth straight GCAC titles

Both Xavier teams won their sixth consecutive GCAC team championships — the women by 34 points, the men by 41 — and both earned automatic bids to the NAIA National Championships for the third time in four years. The national meet will be Nov. 19 in Vancouver, Wash.
Zahri Jackson ran 5,000 meters in 19 minutes, 20.40 seconds to defeat 40 women — including SUNO's Monicah Jepkemboi, the defending champion — and score her second consecutive individual victory. Jepkemboi, the leader until the final 175 yards, was second in 19:31.69. XU freshman Catherine Fakler was third in a career-best 19:32.56.
"I never led until I passed (Jepkemboi) at the end of the race," Jackson said. "I stayed within three feet of her until then. I just ran her pace. You never know for sure if you can outsprint someone at the end. You've just got to have faith in yourself and go."
Jackson recorded the third-fastest 5K in XU women's history and owns the program's fastest three times. Jackson has five top-10 finishes and four top-fives in seven collegiate meets. Her time Saturday was the second-fastest in 11 seasons by a female at the GCAC Championships.Kwame Jackson ran 8,000 meters in 28:12.09 to defeat 37 men and score his first collegiate victory. It was his fifth top-10 and third top-five this season. He finished about 5½ seconds ahead of senior teammate Ray Walston, the 2009 GCAC champion, and nearly 31 seconds ahead of junior teammate Matt Pieri, the defending champion. Walston was GCAC runner-up for the third time. Pieri was top-four for the third straight year.

"Had Matt been healthy, I would've expected a different outcome today because he had run well this season," Moses said. "But Kwame was clearly capable of winning. He ran a strong race, a smart race. Kwame's a worthy champion."
Based on top-10 finishes in this meet, Xavier produced six women's and six men's All-GCAC runners. Joining Zahri Jackson and Fakler among the All-GCAC women were Anna D'Souza (fifth place, career-best 20:24.93), Darian Towns (sixth, Xavier-best 20:36.68), Hali Yarmush (seventh, 20:42.77) and Donyé Coleman (ninth, 20:55.23). D'Souza became the third Gold Nugget to be All-GCAC four times, and it was her third top-five at the league meet.
On the All-GCAC men's team from Xavier were Kwame Jackson, Walston (28:17.63), Pieri (28:43.04), Javon Mead (fifth, 29:07.21), Emmanuel Detiege (eighth, 30:27.72) and Jamaal Williams (ninth, 30:33.35). Of the seven XU freshmen, all four from the women's team and all three from the men's team made all-conference.
Moses, in his seventh season at XU, was selected GCAC Coach of the Year by his peers for the fifth time on the women's side and the sixth time on the men's.
The six straight GCAC championships for the Gold Nuggets and Gold Rush mark the third and fourth times that a Xavier program has won that many in a row on the league or NAIA unaffiliated group level. Xavier won six consecutive Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference championships in men's outdoor track and field from 1938-43. The men's tennis program has an active streak of six straight — GCAC titles in 2005, 2007, 2008, 2009 and 2010 and an NAIA unaffiliated group championship in 2011.

FVSU romps to big homecoming win over Stillman
Fort Valley, Georgia -- Fort Valley State entered Saturday’s game against Stillman College seeking a fresh start, a turnaround in its final stretch of games of the season. Playing in front of a homecoming crowd, the Wildcats got exactly that and then some, steamrolling the visiting Tigers 52-3.
“We’re not giving up as a team; we’re still playing hard,” FVSU defensive end Cody Nash said.

UMES Dedicates Bowling Lanes to Coach Sharon Brummell
Princes Anne, Maryland -- In her 14th year as coach of the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) women's bowling team, head coach Sharon Brummell has accomplished a lot. Three National Championships, five Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Championships, 20 All-America players, five MEAC Coach of the Year awards and two National Coach of the Year honors are just a few of the more glaring recognitions. Beyond the hardware however, Brummell has brought joy, pride, exposure, and recognition to the small Princess Anne, Md. campus and today, the school publicly thanked her for her efforts.
In a ceremony open to the campus and attended by current and former campus dignitaries and current and former players, her parents and family, the bowling lanes were formally named the Sharon D. Brummell Bowling Lanes.

"I can't believe this is happening," said Brummell in a speech at the event. "People ask me how you become a champion and I look around this room and answer, this is how you become a champion. You have people who support you in what you do," she told the large crowd packed inside the bowling center.
The six lane center, housed in the ten-year old Student Services Center (SSC) right on campus, are used for student recreation as well as by the team as one of their two practice facilities. They are adorned with championship banners, photos of all the All-America bowlers from the school's history, all coached by Brummell, photos of the national championship wins and a newly placed mural above the lanes of Brummell throughout her coaching career.
"I was in tears," Brummell added. I had seen the prototype of this but to see it in person really took me aback. I have to thank my Mom and Dad, who attend all my championships, my son Bobby, sister Colleen and husband Vince. They have been there every step of the way."
"This is a more than deserved honor," said Director of Athletics Keith Davidson. "What this woman has accomplished in her sport is amazing. Three national titles in four years and to be the first woman to win an NCAA title and the first African-American to win the NCAA and USBC Collegiate titles, what else do you need to solidify yourself as a legend in this sport? I think I can say with certainty that she is not only one of the best bowling coaches in the country, but one of the best college coaches in the country, period."
"I am just glad the campus could do something like this" said Kimberly Conway Dumpson, the University's Director of Alumni Affairs and Planned Giving who helped secure donations for the naming of the facility, including a major gift from alumnus and bowling supporter Melvin Hill. "This accomplishment stands proudly with anything else done in collegiate coaching, the entire campus, alumni and all our faculty and staff are just so proud of her."
UMES' new Interim President Mortimer Neufville also spoke at the event, stating, "Brummell is a role model for us, this recognition is well deserved."
Perhaps what summed up the occasion best were words by Dr. Hallie Gregory, the Athletics Director at Holly Grove Christian School, who was the athletics director at UMES that hired Brummell for the position. "As an athletic director you have to hire and fire a lot of people. Sometimes you get it right and sometimes you don't. But with Sharon Brummell I know that I got it right. I can rest my laurels on her and know that she has done an amazing job and made UMES the pinnacle of collegiate women's bowling."

Tennessee State falls to Eastern Kentucky
Richmond, Kentucky -- Defensive pressure and a strong Eastern Kentucky rushing attack ended Tennessee State’s winning streak at two games in the Colonels’ 33-22 win Saturday.
TSU (3-5, 2-3 OVC) was held to 65 yards rushing by Eastern Kentucky (4-3, 3-1) after scoring 97 points in the two previous games. Redshirt freshman quarterback Mike German threw his first two interceptions and was replaced by former starter Jeremy Perry in the third quarter.
Matt Denham rushed for 226 yards and scored two touchdowns for the Colonels, who finished with 375 yards rushing.
“They gained over 250 yards rushing,” TSU Coach Rod Reed said. “Any time you do that, allow a team to run the football on you, I do not see very much success happening. We pride ourselves on stopping the run and we did not do that today, and it cost us.”

FAMU Rattlers rally in fourth quarter to beat SCSU Bulldogs
Orangeburg, South Carolina -- As the Florida A&M football team began to gather for its postgame huddle with coach Joe Taylor, he did a right about-turn. Taylor led the way as the team rushed to the side where its band was playing. They had earned the right to celebrate Saturday afternoon at Oliver Dawson Stadium by defeating South Carolina State, 27-24.
A defensive stance unlike any that the Rattlers have shown all season limited the Bulldogs to 178 yards of rushing and just another 121 passing. FAMU capped off a fourth-quarter comeback with two rushing touchdown by LaVante Page and shut the door for good with a fake punt during the closing minutes.
South Carolina State coach Buddy Pough said he was considering possible plays for his Bulldogs team when FAMU struck with the fake.

ORANGEBURG, S.C. — Florida A&M made its running plays count when it mattered most Saturday afternoon, although it managed fewer than 150 yards on the ground against South Carolina State.
The Rattlers ran the ball a total of 13 times during a fourth-quarter comeback in front of 17,153 in attendance. Both times FAMU got in the red zone, LaVante Page was the one who punched it in to secure a 27-24 victory. The win ended an eight-game losing streak for FAMU against SCSU, and also snapped a two-game home winning streak for the Bulldogs.
"It was just execution and the line blocking," said Page. "We executed."
SCSU came into the game with the third-best rushing attack in the MEAC. But while it won the battle on the ground (178 yards to 142 for FAMU), the Bulldogs didn't get the production that usually comes out of their backfield.

HU Pirates survive homecoming scare in win over NCCU Eagles
HAMPTON, Virginia - The Hampton University football team’s four seniors had one thing in mind coming into Saturday’s contest at Armstrong Stadium: Homecoming. The Pirates had not won a Homecoming game since defeating Winston-Salem State 13-3 in 2006, but seniors David Legree, Isaiah Thomas, Dyrri McCain and Micah Pellein wanted to leave their final year with a win on Homecoming – which the Pirates would accomplish, though it took longer than expected with a 30-27 overtime win over North Carolina Central.
Hampton started the game by driving the ball into NCCU territory on its first two drives, but the first ended in a turnover on downs and the second ended in a blocked field goal. The Eagles would get on the board first, when Oleg Parent kicked a 40-yard field goal with 20 second left in the first quarter. Hampton would answer the Eagles on a 6-yard run by running back Antwon Chisholm with 11:49 left in the second quarter to give the Pirates a 7-3 lead. Hampton would score once more in the second quarter off of a 23-yard field goal by Taurean Durham to put the Pirates up 10-3, but the Eagles would manage to go 60 yards in under 1:46 to tie the game up at 10-10 at halftime.

Washington, D.C. -- Howard’s defense stopped North Carolina A&T quarterback Lewis Kindle a yard short of the end zone in overtime to give the Bison a 35-28 victory Saturday, only their second win in their last six homecoming games.
After the Bison (4-4, 3-2 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) scored on Terrence Leffall’s three-yard run on the first possession of overtime, the Aggies (4-3, 3-1) picked up a couple of first downs to reach the Howard 3-yard line.
Two incompletions and a one-yard loss on a Mike Mayhew run left them with a fourth and four, and Kindle was stopped by defensive end Sackie Kerkulah after a three-yard gain.

Alcorn State crushes Concordia - Selma 58-16
LORMAN, Mississippi — Darius Smith threw four touchdown passes and ran for another score as Alcorn State crushed Concordia-Selma 58-16 on Saturday. Smith finished 9 of 18 for 162 yards passing with an interception for the Braves (2-4), and Arnold Walker added 115 yards on 21 carries.
The Braves actually trailed Concordia-Selma of the NAIA 6-0 early in the opening quarter, but then ripped off 51 straight points to sink the Hornets. Smith’s scores opened and closed the run, including 41- and 18-yard touchdown passes to Terrance Lewis and a 10-yard scoring scamper.
