Charlotte, N.C. — A marked advantage in rebounds and inside shots allowed #9 Shaw to power past Johnson C. Smith Saturday evening at Brayboy Gymnasium.
Shaw outrebounded Johnson C. Smith 46-28 and outscored them in the paint 42-22. The Lady Golden Bulls were able to pull in only six offensive rebounds on the evening.
"When we were in our pregame, we talked about the fact that our bigs had to get a certain amount of rebounds - even our guards had to get a certain amount of rebounds," said Shaw Assistant Head Coach Ashante Timoll. " They had that in mind that they had to close out the defensive possession or get another offensive chance."
The Lady Bears were led on the boards by Crystal Gordon, who ended a successful career as a volleyball player for Shaw this fall, and picked up a basketball for the first time this winter. The newcomer hauled in 15 rebounds - eight offensive and seven defensive.
