HAMPTON, Virginia -- Hampton University announced Monday that a lawsuit brought by former football coach Jerry Holmes against the school was effectively dismissed.
The state Supreme Court, on an order dated Sept. 26, refused to grant Holmes' appeal of a previous ruling by the Hampton Circuit Court. Holmes chose not to appeal the Supreme Court's ruling, HU spokesperson Yuri Milligan said.
Though the ruling occurred weeks ago, Milligan said that she had not received the information from the school's legal department until Monday.
Holmes sued Hampton U. in 2011 for nearly $7 million, claiming that statements made by then-athletic director Lonza Hardy and former director of human resources Angela Dunn were false and defamatory and had damaged his professional reputation, in the wake of his dismissal in January 2009.
Hardy said that Holmes was dismissed after one year as head coach because he was networking for a professional assistant coach's position at the Senior Bowl, the postseason college all-star game in Mobile, Ala.
