Southern holds off North Florida Ospreys for first win

JACKSONVILLE, Florida  --  Southern University used its “instant energy” to finally break into the win column and hand North Florida its third loss in four games this year.

The Jaguars got a 21-point performance from Yondarius Johnson off the bench and 25 from Calvin Godfrey to turn back the Ospreys 87-78 Saturday night at the UNF Arena. UNF had five players in double figures, led by Charles McRoy and Dallas Moore, who each scored 14 points.

It was the first win for Southern (1-3), which had lost to Marquette, Middle Tennessee State and Tulane, all by seven points or less. North Florida knows the feeling. The Ospreys (1-3) have also lost three times (Florida, Middle Tennessee and now Southern), all by eight points or less.

This one looked like it might be a lopsided loss for the host Ospreys. They trailed by 17 points at the midway point of the second half. But UNF battled back and twice cut the deficit to four points, the second time at 80-76 with 70 seconds left. But UNF managed just one more basket, a layup by Devin Wilson and the Jaguars made their final five free throws and added a field goal.
