SALISBURY, North Carolina -- The Livingstone College men's basketball team defeated Bowie State University 73-67 in a late second half thriller.
The victory improves the Blue Bears record 8-2 overall and gives them their first conference win of the season over the defending CIAA Champions.
Daresse Johnson played big in the paint for the Blue Bears. He grabbed seven rebounds early in the first half.
The Blue Bears struggled offensively in the first half, only shooting 27 percent from the field; compared to Bowie's 50 percent.
The Blue Bears ended the first half trailing 34-26.
Jody Hill powered the Blue Bears as he hit five three pointers in the second half alone to edge the Bulldogs for the lead. Hill finished the game with 21 points.
The Bulldogs led throughout the entire game until the Blue Bears found their rhythm beginning with a steal by Anthony Welch with less than five minutes left to play. Welch recorded 10 points and five rebounds for Livingstone.
Eric Mayo and Mark Thomas also played very well for the Blue Bears. Mayo recorded a double-double, 14 points and 11 rebounds while Thomas scored 11 points and snatched six rebounds.
Christian Henry contributed seven points to the win.
The Blue Bears forced the Bulldogs to commit 21 turnovers compared to their 11.
As a team the Blue Bears shot 31 percent from the field and 79 percent from the free throw line. Livingstone's consistency at the charity stripe aided in the win.
The Blue Bears will return to action Saturday, January 4 as they face Virginia Union University. Game time is slated for 7:30 p.m.
