SWAC Women's Basketball Player of the Week - March 4

BIRMINGHAM, Alabama -- The Southwestern Athletic Conference voted Alabama State's Nakiya Smith as their SWAC Women's Basketball Player of the Week on March 4th. Smith earned the first Player of the Week award for ASU on the year.

The senior guard from Brewton, Ala., averaged 25.5 points per game, shot 48 percent from floor and 82 percent at the free throw line while helping ASU capture a two game road sweep over Texas Southern and Prairie View A&M last week.

Smith notched back-to-back 20 plus point efforts in both victories. Her points came from shooting 9-of-19 from the floor and 6-of-7 from the line. She also added two rebounds, a pair of assists and a game high five steals in the win. In the 81-78 victory at Prairie View A&M on Monday, Smith nailed 11-of-14 shots from the line and shot 50 percent from the field (7-14) to tally 25 points in just 27 minutes of action.

In their last three wins, Smith has led the Lady Hornets to victories over the top ranked teams in the conference, including Southern, Texas Southern and Prairie View A&M.

Smith has scored 20 points or more five times this season and posted a career high and season high 29 points this year.
