HOUSTON, Texas -- Madarious Gibbs scored 19 points and Texas Southern built a big lead, held off a late charge and beat Jackson State 67-54 on Monday.
Texas Southern raced out to a 12-4 lead behind Deverell Biggs' 3-pointer just over four minutes in. A 9-0 run midway through the half extended the lead to 21-8 and Texas Southern led 38-21 at the break.
The lead reached 20 with 15:19 left on a pair of Malcolm Riley free throws. Jackson State got it to 10 with 4:31 left on Jaleel Queary's jumper, but Texas Southern reeled off the next 11 points to wrap up the win.
Biggs finished with 13 points and a trio of three pointers for Texas Southern. Chris Thomas had 12 points and Riley added 10.
Jackson State was led by Kaven Bernard with 14 points while Derrell Taylor added 12 points and six boards.
