ETTRICK, Virginia -- The Virginia State University Trojan men's basketball team defeated the Broncos of Fayetteville State University on January 3, with a final score of 75-61.
VSU shot 47.5 percent (28-59) from the field, 40.0 percent (6-15) from behind the arc and 65.0 percent (13-20) from the free throw line.
Senior Lamar Kearse led the Trojans in scoring with 25 points while collecting 5 rebounds. Senior newcomer Tyrece Little secured his second double-double of season with 15 points and 11 points. Senior Alphonso Leary and Junior Te'Quan Alers both added 10 points to the books for the Trojans.
In the first half, the Broncos tried to overpower the Trojans with several fast plays. VSU held on to a 26-22 lead with 2:10 left in the half. Kearse knocked down two shots from behind the arc followed by Elijah Moore with a three pointer, putting the Trojans up at the end of the first half with a score of 35-22.
The second half was filled with high energy from the Trojan fans as the men finished strong. The Trojans where shot 90.0 percent from the free throw line in the half.
VSU defeated the Broncos with 19 second chance points, 21 points off turnovers and 30 points in the paint.
The Trojans will take the court on Monday, January 5 against the Bears of Shaw University in Daniel Gymnasium. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m.
