Bowie State Spoils Virginia State’s Homecoming with 22-19 Win

ETTRICK, Virginia  – Bowie State University made it four wins in a row and held on to spoil Virginia State University on Homecoming by a score of 22-19. The win improves Bowie State's overall record to 6-1 and moves the Bulldogs to 4-0 in the CIAA and 2-0 in the North.

Leading Bowie State's offensive charge was senior quarterback Trevon Bennett (Fort Washington, Md.) with 274 passing yards, completing 26-of-41 with one interception and one touchdown. Sophomore Kerrick Pollock led all receivers with 115 yards on six catches.

Redshirt seniors Marquise Anderson (Washington, D.C.) and Cavin Murray (Abingdon, Md.) were the Bulldogs' leaders on defense with six tackles each.

"I have a special group of kids … these guys persevered and were relentless this afternoon", said Bowie State head coach Damon Wilson.

Virginia State (4-3, 2-2 CIAA, 1-1 North) took it to the house on the very first play from scrimmage as Trenton Cannon (Hampton, Va.) scampered 67 yards for a Trojans touchdown.

Bowie State answers right back on their first possession driving 55-yards in nine plays. Bennett connected with Jamal Chappell (Baltimore, Md.) for an 8-yard score to pull within one at 7-6 with 10:37 left in the first quarter.

Special teams put the next six points on the board for Bowie State following a Virginia State punt to start the second quarter. Sophomore Kerrick Pollock (Miami, Fla.) took the punt 60 yards to put the Bulldogs in front 14-6 at the 14:42 mark of the second quarter.

Tarian Ayers (Dillwyn, Va.) connected with Cannon for a 26-yard touchdown with 13:14 left in the second quarter to tie the game at 13-all.

Bowie State junior Christopher Palmer (St. Mary's, Md.) booted a 22-yard field goal at the 8:39 mark of the second quarter to put the Bulldogs back in front by a score of 16-13.

Cannon made another huge run late in the third quarter, this time for a 68 yard score to give the lead back to Virginia State at 19-16 with 43.7 seconds left.

Freshman Nyme Washington (Forestville, Md.) came in the game and connected with Pollock for a 12-yard touchdown with 40.6 seconds remaining in the game to take a 22-19 lead.

The Bulldogs defense made a huge stop on Virginia State's final possession to hold off the Trojans celebration on Homecoming.

The Bulldogs return home next Saturday (October 24th) to host the Panthers of Virginia Union University with kickoff time slated for 1 pm.
