Grambling sloshes past MVSU

GRAMBLING, Louisiana -- Mississippi Valley State coach Rick Comegy declared there were brighter days ahead for the Delta Devils football program earlier this week after it was competitive in a loss to Texas Southern a week ago.

Saturday was not one of those brighter days.

The rain poured down and a steady stream of errors came with it in Mississippi Valley State’s 49-14 loss to Grambling in a SWAC matchup at Eddie Robinson Stadium.

“We played a real excellent football team,” Comegy said after the game. “Both had a lot of mistakes, but they were able to capitalize on theirs and we weren’t.”

The Delta Devils (0-8, 0-6 SWAC) showed some signs of life in the first quarter. Defensive back Farrean Toney recorded an interception, and Mississippi Valley State was able to keep the score close.

It took advantage of a short field when running back Thomas Stokes Jr. capped a 32-yard drive with a 2-yard touchdown run.

Stokes’ run brought the Delta Devils within seven points with 6:51 left in the first, then Grambling (6-2, 6-0 SWAC) dropped the hammer.
