Hayes, a former Winston-Salem State star in his eighth season in the NFL, made a visit a few years ago to High Point Andrews. It’s where Hayes starred in high school, and it was where Quick was a senior running back at the time.
“In my senior year at Andrews I think he was in his second or third year in the NFL and he came by to see his old school, and he didn’t come empty handed,” Quick said about that day. “He had a bunch of boxes of new cleats and gloves for the football team.”
Quick didn’t go to WSSU right out of high school and instead signed with S.C. State where he played two seasons before suffering extensive shoulder injuries. He then decided to transfer and looked for a place close to home, and WSSU was the perfect fit.
“It was just a good thing to see an NFL player giving back to his high school,” Quick said about Hayes. “You hear about some of those guys who don’t remember where they came from but William never has done that. He took the time to do that, and I’ve always remembered that.”
