ECSU Vikings Capture Homecoming Victory; Top Lincoln 28-10

ELIZABETH CITY, North Carolina  -- The Elizabeth City State University Vikings scored all their points in the first half and cruised to a 28-10 win over The Lincoln University Saturday afternoon at Roebuck Stadium.

The Vikings improve to 8-0 all time in their series with Lincoln as the Lions slip to 3-4 overall and 1-3 in CIAA play.

Stephen Williams was the Vikings’ defensive leader versus the Lions with a game high 16 tackles. Fellow linebackers Tyrrel Jones and Breon Bailey chipped in with 8 tackles apiece.

The Lions were +19 in plays from scrimmage and won time of possession by 15 minutes. Viking penalties, 10 flags to the tune of 184 yards, kept the Lion offense on the field for extended stretches but Lincoln failed to capitalize as they only managed 10 points on the day.

Lincoln’s only touchdown of the day came with 4:24 left in the third quarter. The band was charged with playing while the ball was live resulting in an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty against ECSU. That gave Lincoln a fresh set of downs inside the Viking two yard line and one play later Edward McKenzie ran it in from a yard out to make the score 28-10.

That snafu aside, from a scoring standpoint the Vikings only surrendered a 28 yard field goal to the Lions at the 3:43 mark of the second quarter.

ECSU finished the day with 500 yards of total offense despite doing all of their scoring in the first half of play. Just 56 seconds into the game, Chase Byrum capped a 4 play, 68 yard drive with a 6 yard TD run for a 7-0 lead. After the Viking defense forced a three and out on the Lions’ first series of the day, ECSU’s special teams got in on the action. Maliek Wright blocked the Lions’ punt attempt at their 20 yard line and Miacah Cooper scooped and scored the punt return for a 14-0 lead with 11:46 left in the opening quarter.

Daquan Neal added two second quarter rushing scores, from 4 yards and 1 yard respectively, and the Vikings held a 28-3 lead at the intermission.

In his first start of the season Ronald Gray led the Vikings with a career high 115 yards on the day. ECSU’s ground game had a field day against the Lions’ defense as their rushing attack finished with an average of 7.2 yard per carry.

ECSU (4-2, CIAA 2-2) will hit the road to face Chowan University next Saturday in Murfreesboro, NC. Game time is slated for 1 p.m.
