Just Sayin: UMES Hawks seeking another special season

PRINCESS ANNE, Maryland -- Last season, the UMES men’s and women’s basketball programs took big steps forward.

The women made a surprise run in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference tournament, knocking off North Carolina Central, Hampton and Norfolk State before falling in the title game.

The Hawks men made huge strides under first-year coach Bobby Collins, as well winning 18 games before a disappointing loss in the MEAC tourney. A trip to High Point in the CollegeInsider.com Tournament ended in a 70-64 loss and moved the coach’s focus to this year.

On Friday night at the William Hytche Center, both squads kicked off their season with Hawks Hysteria festivities designed to help introduce the newcomers to the students and fans.

Amid the dance performances, the skills competitions and the pulsating rhythm of the night’s soundtrack, my son and I got our first look at those newcomers, as well as a reminder of who’s back in maroon and gray.
