Battle-tested Rams vying for CIAA title

DURHAM, North Carolina -- Winston-Salem State doesn’t have to be reminded just how far it’s come to wind up in today’s CIAA championship game against Bowie State.

“We’ve been through a lot this season,” coach Kienus Boulware of the Rams said about a roller-coaster regular season.

The Rams (5-5) and Bulldogs (9-1) play at 2 p.m. at Durham County Stadium.

Winston-Salem State went 0-3 in nonconference play and then lost two CIAA games, both at Bowman Gray Stadium. Through it all, they emerged as the Southern Division champions. They’ll be making their fifth straight championship game appearance in search of their third CIAA title since 2011.

Defensive end Michael Bloomfield, the Rams’ leading tackler and a first-team all-CIAA selection, is the lone Ram to be a part of all five Southern Division titles. The senior is focused on one task.
