Longtime assistant coach moves into head coach position for Southern University's women's basketball

BATON ROUGE, Louisiana -- Longtime assistant coach Carlos Funchess will be the next head women's basketball coach at Southern University.

Funchess served the program as assistant coach for the past 13 seasons under outgoing head coach Sandy Pugh. During this time, Funchess has been described as "instrumental" to the women's basketball program's success. Since he began in Baton Rouge in 2005, he's guided the program to five SWAC regualr season and three SWAC Tournament titles.

He's worked primarily with post players such as All-SWAC performers Frederika Lewis, Freda Allen, Jasmine Jefferson and Briana Green.

Southern University is set to announce Funchess as the next head coach at a press conference at 2 p.m. tomorrow at the F.G. Clark Activity Center.

Funchess himself has earned national recognition for his win at ESPN's 1991 College slam Dunk Contest following his senior season. He's also a former two-time All-Southland Conference performer and the 1991 co-Player of the Year at then-Northwest Louisiana University.
