Chowan Hawks Women's Basketball Releases 2018-19 Schedule

MURFREESBORO, North Carolina – Coach LaToya Jones and the Chowan Women's Basketball team announced their 2018-19 schedule on Tuesday featuring 14 home contests and two Division I exhibitions.


WBB Schedule ReleaseChowan finished the 2017-18 season with a 19-9 overall record and a 10-6 mark in CIAA action to finish fifth in the CIAA Northern Division.  The Hawks were steadily in the D2SIDA Atlantic Regional Poll for most of the season ranking as high as seventh.  CU would fall out of the regional rankings going 1-4 in their last five contests.

The Hawks start their season in an exhibition against Division I Charlotte on November 3.  Chowan will tip-off the regular season at West Virginia State the following weekend facing Glenville State and the host West Virginia State.  Glenville State went 31-2 last season on their way to a Mountain East Conference title before falling in the second round of the NCAA Division II Tournament.  West Virginia State finished 14-16 last season.

Chowan will host Mount Olive in their home opener on November 14 before hosting Lenoir-Rhyne on November 17.  Chowan picked up wins against Mount Olive and Lenoir-Rhyne last season in tough three point and six point battles respectively.

To round out the month of November, the Blue and White will travel to Francis Marion, Limestone, Barton, and Division I Elon.  The Hawks picked up the win against Francis Marion at home last season in a clash between Atlantic and Southeast regionally ranked squads.  Chowan will meet future Conference Carolinas foe, Limestone, for the first time before taking on another Conference Carolinas foe, Barton.  Chowan and Barton will meet for the first time since 2013 when the Hawks took both meetings.  The Hawks will face Elon in an exhibition on November 28.

In the month of December, Chowan will not have to leave the confines of the Helms Center as the Hawks host five straight games.  CU opens CIAA play against league newcomer, Claflin, on December 1.  UNC Pembroke will come to Murfreesboro in a non-conference contest prior to the Hawks hosting Fayetteville State (12/13), Shaw (12/15), and St. Augustine's (12/17) before the holiday break.  Chowan defeated Fayetteville State twice last season and St. Augustine's three times.
Chowan starts the 2019 year off with a home non-conference contest against Catawba on January 3.  The Indians shocked the Hawks last season with a 75-72 victory in Salisbury.  The Hawks will continue their tour of the CIAA Southern division traveling to Johnson C. Smith (1/10), Winston-Salem State (1/12), and Livingstone (1/14).

The CIAA Northern Divisional play starts on January 19 as the Hawks host Elizabeth City State.  Chowan will then travel to Virginia State for a midweek contest before hosting Bowie State and Lincoln (Pa.) on January 26 and 30 respectively.

Then, Chowan will take on divisional powerhouse, Virginia Union, on the road to open up February.  The Hawks will take one final step out of league action to face Salem at home on February 6 before traveling three of the final five divisional contests of the season.  The Hawks will host Virginia State on February 13 and Virginia Union in the regular season finale on February 23.

The 2019 CIAA Basketball Tournament will be held February 26 – March 2 in Charlotte, N.C. at the Bojangles' Coliseum and the Spectrum Center.
