Lincoln Lions Football falls to D-I Central Connecticut State

NEW BRITAIN, Connecticut  -- The Lincoln University football team lost their second game of the season as Central Connecticut State University (a Division I FCS school) defeated the Lions 55-0 on Arute Field in New Britain, Connecticut.

The Lions fall to 0-2 on the season while the Blue Devils improve to 1-1.

On the ground, Isiah Byrd (Bloomfield, N.J.) led Lincoln with 43 yards rushing on six carries. Vincent Espinoza (Madera, Calif /Madera (West Hills)) had six completions for 52 yards while Zach Green (Chesapeake, Va. ) added three completions for 28 yards. Reginald Mays, Deontae Brockington (Randallstown, Md. /Baltimore City College HS) and Dewey Ruth (Baltimore , Md. /Frederick Douglass (Globe Tech) ) had two catches apiece.

On the defensive end Devon Cathcart (Chicago, Ill./Thornton Fractional South) led the team with nine tackles while Teyonte McKenzie added eight.

The Blue Devils rushed for six touchdowns with Aaron Dawson and David –Jean Guillaume scoring two apiece. Enyce Walker led the team with 82 rushing yards and had one touchdown. Jacob Dolegala connected on 7-of-8 passes for 151 yards and two touchdowns. Three Blue Devil quarterbacks combined to complete 16-of-19 passes for 225 yards.

Central Connecticut jumped out to a 27-0 lead in the first quarter, scoring on all four of their possessions and extended their lead to 41-0 with touchdowns on their first two possessions in the second quarter.

The Lions had their best opportunity to score following the Blue Devils last touchdown of the quarter, driving the ball to the Blue Devils 35 yard line before penalties forced them back into their own territory. The drive ended with interception thrown by Espinoza.

Central Connecticut scored late in the third quarter and added their final touchdown as the fourth quarter began to round out the scoring.

The Lions will play their final non conference game of the season on Saturday, September 15, 2018 when they travel to western Pennsylvania to take on the Clarion University Eagles. Kickoff is set for 1:00 p.m.
