VUU Taylor & Taylor Show on Display against Carson-Newman

Football CNRICHMOND, Virginia -- It was the Taylor and Taylor show, but Carson-Newman University eked out a 33-29 win over Virginia Union University on Saturday, September 8, at Hovey Field in Richmond, Va.

VUU quarterback Darius Taylor completed 22 of 33 passes for 182 yards and a touchdown. He also ran for 69 yards on 13 carries.

Tabyus Taylor ran for 109 yards on 24 carries and caught seven passes for 50 yards.

On defense, Sterling Hammond picked up a blocked extra point, then lateraled the ball to Quantay Battle as the Panthers scored a rare defensive extra point.

Carson-Newman's Antonio Wimbush rushed for three second-half touchdowns, helping the visiting Eagles earn their first win of the season.



Wimbush rushed for 151 yards on 20 carries, scoring on runs of 3 and 8 yards in the fourth quarter to help put the game out of reach for the Panthers (1-1).

"It was important No. 1 for us to come here and win," Carson-Newman coach Mike Turner said. "You're coming up here and playing a football team that's very prestigious in the CIAA. ... They've got some great athletes that they use very well, offensively and defensively. So I'm very proud of our kids for coming out, getting a good start today."

Virginia Union now travels to Charlotte, N.C., to face Johnson C. Smith University at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 15.
