BATON ROUGE, Louisiana -- Howard University women's soccer remains at the top of the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) after winning both weekend games on the road. The Bison captured wins at Jackson State University on Friday and Southern University on Sunday.Howard (10-6-1, 8-1-1 SWAC) vs. Jackson State University (2-14-0, 2-7 SWAC)
It was an exciting game offensively for the Bison as they battled Jackson State University (JSU). Three of Howard's four goals came in the first half. With an assist from Kenya Saunders, junior forward Hollie Cartwright scored at the 18 minute mark. The Bison scored their second goal less than two minutes later. Once again it was Kenya Saunders on the assist but this time to Makela Davidson. Howard went on to score one more time before the second half. At the 29 minute mark Thalia Boucher was on target after the assist by Saunders.
Their fourth goal was a buzzer beater that came from Victoria Thornton just as time expired on the game clock in the second half. Howard outshot Jackson State, 26-8. Howard had nine corner kicks to JSU's three.
Defensively, Alaya Hightower recorded three saves to JSU goalie Bianca Clemente's 13. However, Hightower allowed no goals. Clemente allowed four.
Howard (10-6-1, 8-1-1 SWAC) vs. Southern University (3-9-2, 2-5-2 SWAC)
It was a scoreless first half for the Bison as they saw the Southern University Jaguars capitalize off of a penalty kick goal at the 34 minute mark. The Bison answered in the second half. Bayley Carmichael came through with the assist to Kendall MaCauly who made a successful shot to the inside right of the box. MaCauly would assist again but to a different teammate. MaCauly sent it to Aleeya Sawyer who put up a header on the cross from the right side of the field to put the Bison up 2-1. Those points remained unanswered as the Bison closed the game to improve their winning record.
Howard outshot Southern, 15-7. HU had nine corner kicks to Southern's two.
On defense, Alaya Hightower allowed her first goal in seven games. She played all 90 minutes and recorded seven saves.
The weekend wins position the Bison at the top of the conference; however, a win by Grambling against University of Arkansas Pine Bluff next weekend could put the Bison at number two. Their fate remains undetermined ahead of the SWAC Tournament that will be held November 1-4 in Houston, Texas.
