NEW ORLEANS — Xavier University of Louisiana's Mariia Borodii and Charlene Goreau, both NAIA All-Americans last season, are seeded 1-2 in the singles bracket of the XULA Invitational, a women's tournament which will begin at 9 a.m. Saturday at XULA Tennis Center.
A collective 19 singles players and eight doubles teams from XULA, city rival Loyola and LSU-Alexandria will compete. The tournament is free and open to the public.
Borodii is seeded first, followed by Goreau — the Gold Nuggets' only three-time first-team NAIA All-American — Kirsty Venter of LSUA and Chandler Harmon of Loyola. Venter is a transfer from NCAA Division I Arkansas State, and Harmon is a freshman.
Also playing singles for the Gold Nuggets will be Yi Chen Pao, Lacee Ancar and Farah Baklouti. Pao and Goreau will team up for doubles, as will Borodii and Baklouti. Both doubles teams won titles at the HBCU National Championships in September, and Pao won a singles title at that event. XULA was the HBCU overall women's champion.
In the NAIA end-of-season team rankings from the spring of 2018, XULA was third and LSUA eighth. XULA eliminated LSUA in the national quarterfinals.
The men's brackets of the XULA Invitational will be played Nov. 3-4 with Loyola and William Carey competing with the Gold Rush.
