ECSU’s Jenkins first team All-America

Elizabeth City State defensive end Malcolm Jenkins was named to the first team Daktronics All-America team on Tuesday, becoming just the second Viking to be named to the Division II honor squad. Defensive back Howard Williams is the only other ECSU player to make the team. He was selected in 2004.

In the preseason, Jenkins was named to the Lindy’s All-America team and did not disappoint throughout the season.

Jenkins CIAA’s top defender

Just one Elizabeth City State football player made the All-Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association first team, but it was big one. Defensive end Malcolm Jenkins not only made the first team for the second year in a row, but he was also named the league’s Defensive Player of the Year.

“Malcolm did a lot of things good,” ECSU coach Waverly Tillar said. “He’s consistent most every game out and he gave the offenses we faced a fit.”

Jenkins led the CIAA in sacks with 13 and tackles for loss with 18.5. The senior from Florence, N.J., led the Vikings with 27 quarterback hurries and was third on the team with 42 tackles.

2nd-half explosion puts DSU in D-II semis

ALBANY, GA. — Delta State spotted undefeated Albany State an early touchdown, then used a dominating second-half performance to beat the Golden Rams 28-7 Saturday and advance to the semifinals of the NCAA Division II football playoffs.

DSU (10-3) will play Shepherd University (11-2) of West Virginia in the semifinals on Saturday. The site and time will be announced today. The game will be televised live by CBS College Sports.
Shepherd advanced with a 49-14 victory on Saturday over Mercyhurst.

Albany State (11-1) took the opening kickoff and drove 74 yards for a touchdown, scoring on a 35-yard pass from Stanley Jennings to Ronnie Childs. With the game barely four minutes old, DSU trailed.

Not to be

ALBANY, Ga. — The Rams came into their Division II quarterfinal playoff game Saturday on the verge of making history. Unfortunately, they repeated it. Albany State fell to another Gulf South Conference team in the postseason, this time, 28-7, to Delta State on Saturday at Albany State University Coliseum, thus ending another magical undefeated season. Only this go round, the Rams beat themselves.

“(Delta State) just played better than we did (Saturday). We made a lot of mistakes and they capitalized on them, and that really was the difference in the game,” ASU head coach Mike White said. “We talked a little about 2004 (when we lost to Valdosta State in the quarterfinals) and how we’ve (had) this opportunity before. We didn’t want to get behind because they have such a good combination on offense, so we knew we had to stay on top of them.

Albany State falls to Delta State in D-II quarters, season ends at 11-1

Albany State scores the first points of the game Saturday against Delta State in the NCAA Division II quarterfinals, then doesn't score again the rest of the game in a 28-7 loss to the Statesmen, ending their amazing season at 11-1 and two wins shy of the national championship.

SO LONG, SENIORS: A historic ASU team says goodbye to historic players

ALBANY, GA — This season has been one to remember for Albany State football fans. Close games, winning streaks and home-field advantage in the playoffs mean the area won’t be forgetting the 2010 Rams any time soon. But with the 28-7 defeat to Delta State on Saturday in the D-II quarterfinals, ASU lost more than just a game. It lost a bunch of key seniors — Jacob Hardwick, Ronnie Childs, Mario Fuller, Prathon Wilkerson, LiRonnie Davis and Robert Welton to name a few.

“That’s always a difficult one for a coach, because most of those guys are five-year guys. You’ve been with them for a while,” ASU head coach Mike White said. “It’s a good relationship and we hate to see it go out this way.”

ASU defeats Wingate, 30-28, advances to quarterfinals of D-II playoffs

ALBANY, Ga.-- Next, please. The Albany State football team is moving on in the NCAA Division II playoffs after beating Wingate, 30-28, on Saturday afternoon in front of a packed house at Albany State University Coliseum.

Stanley Jennings threw two touchdowns, LiRonnie Davis and Rodrick Nabors got it done on the ground and the Rams' "Ditry Blue" defense held off Division II's most prolific offenses en route to the huge win.

In scary news, however, Rams defensive star Justin Blash had to be carted off the field after an injury late in the fourth quarter. There was no immediate word the extent of the injury, but it would be a huge blow to ASU if Blash can't return next week.

Wingate ousted, ends 9-3

ALBANY, Ga. The Wingate Bulldogs mounted a late rally against the Albany State Golden Rams Saturday afternoon, but fell short 30-28. The loss ends the Bulldogs' seven-game winning streak and 2010 season. Wingate finishes 9-3.

Albany State moves to 11-0 overall and will host Delta State (Miss.) next weekend. Albany State quarterback Stanley Jennings completed two touchdown passes for the Golden Rams. Albany State running back LiRonnie Davis (Macon, Ga.) ran nine times for 90 yards and two scores, including a 45-yard run in the fourth quarter that gave the host team a 30-21 advantage.

ASU-WINGATE NOTEBOOK: Rams await word on injured defensive lineman Blash, who was carted off late in 30-28 win Saturday against Wingate

ALBANY, Ga. — There was a scary moment in the fourth quarter of Saturday’s game when 6-foot-5, 300-pound sophomore defensive lineman Justin Blash had to be carted off the field at the 4:34 mark after several moments of silent anticipation.

The early diagnosis was a sprained knee, and nothing appeared to be broken, but the coach Mike White said the team will know more Monday. If Blash can’t recover, it’ll be another tough loss for the Rams as they head into the Division II quarterfinals next week against Delta State after a 30-28 win against Wingate on Saturday.

Win-gate? Check.

For only the second time in school history, the Albany State football program is headed to the quarterfinals of the Division II playoffs, this after the Rams hold on to beat Wingate, 30-28, on Saturday afternoon at Albany State University Coliseum.

ALBANY, Ga. — Stanley Jennings is starting to look like he might have a future as a psychic. After guaranteeing earlier in the season that the Albany State football team would win the rest of its regular-season games — which came true — he predicted during practice this week that the “Dirty Blue” Rams defense would contain quarterback Cody Haffly and the explosive Wingate offense.

And that’s exactly what happened Saturday as ASU (11-0) defeated Wingate, 30-28, at home in the second round of the NCAA Division II playoffs to advance to the quarterfinals against Delta State (9-3). Delta State defeated North Alabama, 47-24, on the other side of the bracket Saturday.

ALBANY, GA — It’s officially a new college football season in Dougherty County. That perfect 10-0 run through the regular season by Albany State? Old news. The NCAA Division II playoffs are here, which means slates are clean, tensions are high and losers go home.

In the Rams’ case, though, it’s lose and stay home as they host Wingate (9-2) in the second round today after the Bulldogs — No. 14 in the nation in total offense — defeated Morehouse, 63-41, in the first round last week, while the Rams had a bye.

VSU: Alfred the Great

ETTRICK, Va. -- Every day after practice, Virginia State Football coach Andrew Faison leaves Rogers Stadium and heads down a winding walkway that takes him past Daniel Gymnasium and in the direction of the James Hugo Johnston Memorial Library.

Along the way, he sometimes pauses to watch intramural football games at a nearby field. He's not necessarily expecting to find anything, but he looks nonetheless. Good thing he does. It was on one of those visits in 2009, albeit after the urging of some of his players, that he first discovered Alfred Ngauja.

Faison liked what he saw enough to offer Ngauja a chance to participate in spring workouts. "Once we got a chance to put the pads on him and see how he fared, he had that 'it' with him," Faison said.

Tuskegee holds off Alabama State to win Turkey Day Classic, 17-10

Tuskegee ends its season 9-2 and raises Coach Willie Slater record to 51-7 in five seasons with the Golden Tigers.  Tuskegee defeated both West and East SWAC champions --Texas Southern (8-3) and Alabama State (7-4) this season.

MONTGOMERY, AL -- Tuskegee quarterback Joshua Harris' 60-yard pass to wide receiver Antoine Mitchell keyed a fourth-quarter touchdown drive that ultimately gave the Golden Tigers a 17-10 win Thursday over Alabama State in the Turkey Day Classic at Cramton Bowl.

Three plays after his completion to Mitchell, Harris hit tight end Stephen Clements on a 2-yard touchdown pass to give the Golden Tigers a 17-3 lead with 10 minutes remaining.

Tuskegee tops Alabama State in Turkey Day Classic

Montgomery, AL - Tuskegee won the oldest football classic among the nation's Historically Black Colleges and Universities, beating Alabama State for the second straight year, 17-10, in the Turkey Day Classic at the Cramton Bowl.

Joshua Harris threw for a touchdown and Nykeem Barton rushed for one to power Division II Tuskegee (9-2), which completed a sweep of the Football Championship Subdivision teams that will play in the SWAC Championship Game on Dec. 12, Alabama State (7-4) and Texas Southern (8-3). The Golden Tigers extended their series lead over Alabama State to 60-33-4, including 48-31-3 in the Turkey Day Classic.

TURKEY DAY CLASSIC: TUSKEGEE 17, ALABAMA STATE 10: Efficient Harris leads Golden Tigers over Hornets

All week, Alabama State coaches and defenders said the key to beating Tuskegee in the 87th annual Turkey Day Classic was forcing Tuskegee quarterback Joshua Harris to beat the Hornets with his arm.

Harris was up to the challenge. The senior completed 11 of 22 passes for 196 yards and a touchdown to lead the Golden Tigers to a 17-10 win over the Hornets at Cramton Bowl on Thanksgiving Day. "He's been inconsistent at times, but I'm talking about a kid with thick skin," said Tuskegee coach Willie Slater. "He receives it and tries to get better. He made some big plays for us today, really big plays."

Tuskegee defeats ASU

TURKEY DAY NOTEBOOK: Is ASU-Tuskegee rivalry in jeopardy?

Tuskegee won the Turkey Day Classic for the 59th time in the 97-game series with Alabama State and for the 10th time in the last 12 meetings, but there is some talk that the series between the two rivals may be coming to an end.

It's not the first time the two sides haven't seen eye to eye, but Alabama State's plan to move the game to its campus in two years may factor into the Tigers' thoughts of quitting the rivalry. "That's beyond me," Tuskegee coach Willie Slater said. "I wouldn't want to speculate."

Tuskegee, a Division II school, forgoes an opportunity to participate in the NCAA Division II playoffs by playing the Turkey Day Classic. Skipping the Thanksgiving Day game could put the Tigers in a position to participate in the playoffs and compete for a national championship.

Alabama State looks for better Turkey Day Classic results vs. Tuskegee

Alabama State vs. Tuskegee, 3 p.m. CT, Television: ESPNU

Since 2005, Turkey Day Classic opponents Alabama State and Tuskegee have entered the showdown with familiar fore casts beyond Thanksgiving. Tuskegee has traditionally been set to play in December's Pioneer Bowl -- the exception being 2008, when the Pioneer Bowl was canceled -- while Alabama State knew the annual game was its last of the season. At today's 3 p.m. kickoff in Montgomery, the roles are reserved.

Tuskegee (8-2) has lost its four-year hold on the Southern Intercollegiate Ath letic Conference title, while Alabama State (7-3) has secured a spot in the Dec. 11 Southwestern Athletic Conference cham pionship game in Birmingham. Despite the looming SWAC title showdown with Texas Southern, Alabama State coach Reggie Barlow said he won't be holding back today.

Turkey Day Classic on ESPNU

Alabama State has beaten Tuskegee University only once in the past six Turkey Day Classics at Montgomery’s Cramton Bowl — and that one win in 2008 was a controversial one when TU’s apparent winnng touchdown was ruled out of bounds, which photos showed was the wrong call.

Tuskegee has been the dominant team in recent years, having won 11 of the past 14 games after Alabama State reeled off 15 wins in 17 games from 1975 through 1995. The two teams didn’t play in 1991-92.

For the first time in years, Alabama State comes into the game on a roll with four straight victories to nail down a berth in the SWAC Championship Game December 11 as the conference’s East Division representative.

The Bear Facts: 5 Reasons why college students should be thankful on Thanksgiving

Today and the rest of the week, most students, staff and faculty will be joining family and friends to celebrate Thanksgiving.

Thanksgiving is a special time of the year that we join our families and friends in counting our blessings. Of course, Shaw University family is especially excited by victory that our football team delivered being the new CIAA Champions!

We are grateful that the Bears' flag flies high and we are also thankful that we can count many other blessings just by being students at this time. Here are five reasons why college students should be thankful on Thanksgiving:

Shaw Bears beating the odds

Videographer: ShawUBears

The rules for NCAA Division II football competition allow teams to have 36 full scholarships. Shaw coach Darrell Asberry is getting by with 26. The Bears don't have a home stadium, and their new practice field is roughly 50 yards long. Without access to an indoor facility, Tuesday's rains forced the staff to cancel practice.

And yet, Asberry is one happy coach these days.

With a 14-7 win over Virginia State last Saturday in the CIAA title game at Durham, the 9-2 Bears are off to the Division II championship playoffs for the third time in four seasons. "It says a lot about these guys, and the assistant coaches we have been able to get here, it really does," Asberry said.

Fort Valley & St. Augustine's to Tangle in Pioneer Bowl

Fort Valley State and St. Augustine's will tangle in the 12th annual Pioneer Bowl, the CIAA and SIAC announced. The Wildcats (8-2), ranked no. 22 in the latest AFCA Division II Coaches Poll, and the Falcons (8-2) will meet Dec. 4 at A.J. McClung Stadium in Columbus, Georgia at 1 p.m.

This will be the first appearance for both schools in the Pioneer Bowl, which pits the CIAA and SIAC against each other in the only sanctioned bowl game between HBCU conferences.

Saint Augustine's will play in Pioneer Bowl

St. Augustine’s will represent the CIAA in the Pioneer Bowl in Columbus, Ga. on Dec. 4, conference commissioner Leon Kerry said Tuesday.

“I went right down the rankings and after Shaw was in the playoffs the invitation went to St. Aug’s and if they turned it down then it was going to be Winston-Salem State,” Kerry said by telephone.

St. Aug’s went 8-2 overall and 6-1 in the CIAA, with its only loss to Shaw, the eventual CIAA champion. Shaw (9-2) will represent the CIAA in the Division II playoffs and will open Saturday at Shepherd (W.Va.).

Albany State, Morehouse, Shaw Enter D-II Playoff Picture

For the first time in SIAC history, two schools will play in the NCAA Division II playoffs in the same year. Albany State and Morehouse were selected to Region II for the playoffs.

Meanwhile, Shaw, which defeated Virginia State Saturday for its third CIAA championship in four years, is the lone conference representative. Both St. Augustine's and Winston-Salem State, which had hoped for at-large bids, were left out.

D-II PLAYOFFS: ASU retains No. 1 seed, will face Morehouse-Wingate winner Nov. 27 in Albany

ATLANTA — The NCAA Division II football playoff pairings were announced Sunday and two SIAC teams, Albany State and Morehouse — for the first time in conference history — both earned berths to the postseason.

For the first time since 2004, Albany State finished a perfect 10-0 in the regular season and No. 1 in the region. The Rams, who won their first SIAC title since 2006, will have a bye in the first-round of the playoffs and host the winner of Wingate/Morehouse on Nov. 27 at noon.

Morehouse, which finished 8-2 in the regular season...

Fort Valley State Wildcats left out of playoffs

Donald Pittman wanted two things the past few days. He got one of them. Two teams ahead of Pittman and Fort Valley State in the NCAA Division II Super Region 2 lost in their regular-season finales.

Region No. 2 Valdosta State lost 24-21 on Thursday to West Alabama, but the Blazers were highly unlikely to drop out of the top six in the region. Then on Saturday, region No. 4 North Alabama fell 29-28 to Harding in Gulf South Conference play. "They lost, and we said, ‘We have a chance,’ ” Pittman said. “But it didn’t happen.”

Upon further review, Morehouse in playoffs for first time

The Morehouse football team showed some brashness in holding another party on a playoff selection Sunday after last year’s collective kick in the groin. However, this year's festive gathering didn’t end with a thud when the last playoff team was picked: Morehouse (8-2) will play at Wingate (8-2) on Saturday. Albany State, No. 1 seed in Super Region 2, awaits the winner.

The Maroon Tigers, left out of the postseason last year, had to wait until mid-afternoon to find out if this season would continue.

Shaw Edges Virginia State 14-7 to Claim CIAA Championship

The Central Interscholastic Athletic Association (CIAA) football championship game was a tale of two stories Saturday, Nov. 14 at Durham County Stadium.

You would think the Shaw University Bears completely toppled the Virginia State University Trojans (VSU) by looking at the box score. Shaw out gained VSU with 412 total yards compared to the Trojans’ 136. Yet Shaw only barely edged the Trojans, 14-7, to claim the CIAA crown.

VSU was able to keep the score tight despite being blasted by Shaw’s potent running game. Bears’ star tailback Raymond Williams was named Shaw's Most Valuable Player after rushing for 117 yards and a touchdown on 33 carries.

Trojans fall to the Bears

DURHAM, N.C. - Brian Berry had a step on his defender, it seemed, but the ball sailed just beyond his outstretched arms, thus ending the Virginia State University football team's storybook season. The CIAA Northern Division champions lost to Shaw 14-7, winners of the Southern Division, in the conference championship game at Durham County Stadium on Saturday.

The Bears dominated at times, posting a 412-136 advantage in offensive yards, but the Trojans lingered thanks to an ability to play timely defense and propensity to make big plays when they needed them most. In the end, however, Shaw's senior duo of running back Raymond Williams and quarterback Kevin Atkins did enough to secure the Bears' third conference title in four years.

VSU comes up short in title game

DURHAM, N.C. -- The Virginia State Trojans tried to make the most out of the least yesterday in the CIAA football championship game. And it almost worked. But the Trojans were unable to score when they needed a touchdown most and lost to Shaw University 14-7 in Durham County Stadium.

Shaw will find out today if it advances to the Division II playoffs. The Trojans' postseason hopes rest with the chance of an invitation to the Pioneer Bowl in Columbus, Ga.

Week 11: Pretenders vs. Contenders

Great story this morning that sort through most of the scenarios for the FCS playoff picture, coming from The Sports Network, In the FCS Huddle: Will the bubble burst on your team?  For SWAC fans, this means nothing for your December 11 conference championship game.

Alabama State clinched the Eastern Division berth and improved to 7-3, 6-3 SWAC by holding on in the final seconds to defeat Stump Mitchell's Southern Jaguars (2-8, 1-7 SWAC) at A.W. Mumford Stadium, 21-19. Mitchell's Jags will make school history on November 27, in the Bayou Classic if they fall to Western Division contender, Grambling State (8-2, 7-1 SWAC). A loss will give the Jaguars their first nine loss season in the University's 130 year history.

Grambling is in a must win and hope situation after falling in overtime on Thursday to Texas Southern (7-3, 7-1 SWAC). The TSU Tigers were able to fight back from 17 points down in the 4th quarter to over take Grambling 41-34 in overtime. The only way GSU makes it to the SWAC Championship game is for UAPB (5-5, 4-4 SWAC) to upset TSU on next Saturday, and they take care of business with Southern in the Bayou Classic.

Based on past practice of the FCS Playoffs selection committee, a 9-2 Grambling State team will not receive an at-large berth to the FCS playoffs.  Those slots appears to be reserved for 6-4 teams from the CAA, based on strength of schedule, etc. etc.  Anyhow, Grambling State has a date with Southern in the highly successful/money mak'in State Farm Bayou Classic on November 27, 2010, and cannot participate in the FCS playoffs that starts on November 20 --even if they were interested.

Congratulations to Savannah State Tigers (1-9) for clipping MEAC rival North Carolina Central Eagles 28-21 to record their first win of the season.  Great that it happened in your first home game of the season at Memorial Stadium as on-campus Ted Wright Stadium continues its renovation process. Talk about resiliency, Savannah State has it and has shown improvement with each game. The nucleus is there for a competitive club next season.

The MEAC championship will be decided Saturday at the Florida Classic in Orlando between Florida A&M (7-3, 6-1 MEAC) and Bethune Cookman (10-0, 7-0). Based on the total body of work for this season, FAMU shouldn't be on the same field with the B-CU Wildcats. However, this Rattlers team is very special after coming back from two devastating losses to Tennessee State (18-29)and South Carolina State (0-19) in weeks 4/5. The Rattlers have won five straight games and more important, found a true starting quarterback in redshirt freshman Austin Trainor and an energized run stopping defense.

If  Florida A&M has any hope of an at-large berth in the FCS playoffs, it must defeat B-CU and throw the MEAC championship into a three way tie with South Carolina State (8-2, 6-1 MEAC). The S.C. State Bulldogs must beat North Carolina A&T (1-9, 1-6) in the Battle of the Border for an at-large berth. All three MEAC teams deserve an FCS playoffs berth, but Bethune-Cookman is the only one guaranteed a seat at the table.

Regardless, the Florida Classic will be Rattlers and Wildcats Super Bowl, as more than 75,000 fans are expected along with an ESPN Classic/ESPN3 national television and Internet audience.  The game and battle of the bands is bigger than any FCS playoff game--including the national championship played in Chattanooga, Tennessee.  Move over Magic City and Bayou Classics.  The Rattlers and Wildcats are getting ready to set an FCS attendance record in the Florida Classic!

How 'bout Rick  Comegy's Jackson State Tigers ( 7-3, 5-3 SWAC) blowing out  a strong Monte Coleman's Arkansas Pine Bluff  (5-5, 4-4 SWAC) defense 52-30 on the road (with the head coach out on suspension).  No doubt, Tigers quarterback Casey Therriault is the SWAC offensive player of the year. Therriault passed for 331 yards and five touchdowns and ran for two touchdown more in the win.

Jackson State offense is #1 in the FCS in total offense with 3385 total yards in 10 games. Therriault has completed 239 of 415 (57.59%) passes for 3272 yards with only 8 interceptions, and 29 touchdowns. The offense averaged 442 yards per game and scored 46 touchdowns.

The FCS leaders in individual rushing are:

FCS Rank

  • 3. Frank Warren, Grambling State, 1,431 yards; 6.78 per rush, 143.10 ypg.
  • 16. DeAngelo Branche, Norfolk St. 1,097 yards; 4.75 per rush, 109.70 ypg.
  • 20. Mike Mayhew, N.C. A&T 1,073 yards; 5.09 per rush, 107.30 ypg.
  • 25. Marcus Wright, Texas Southern    943 yards; 4.79 per rush, 94.30 ypg.
  • 32. Tony Green, Alabama A&M 666 yards; 5.60 per rush 83.25 ypg.
  • 33. Philip Sylvester, Florida A&M 822 yards; 5.71 per rush 82.20 ypg.
  • 38. Chris Massey, South Carolina St. 639 5.15 per rush 79.88 ypg.
Shaw University (9-2) defeated Virginia State (8-3) 14-7 to win the 2010 CIAA Football Championship. The Bears are now scheduled to face WVIAC champion Shepherd (9-1), who was selected as the fourth seed in Super Region I, NCAA Division II football playoffs. The game is scheduled for noon on November 20 at -- you guessed it -- Shepherdstown, WV. Shaw is a fifth seed in Super Region 1.

#5 Morehouse (8-2) was selected for the playoffs and is on the road to Wingate, N.C. to faces #4Wingate Bulldogs (8-2) of the South Atlantic Conference.  It is the Bulldogs first bid to the NCAA Division II football playoffs.

The winner will travel to Albany, Georgia to face the #1 seed  in Super Region 2, Albany State (Ga.) Golden Rams. ASU has a first round bye this weekend.

Now, the rest of the story...

Holloway steps in to spark Stillman to homecoming win over Central State

TUSCALOOSA | Desmond Holloway, who practiced all week as a wide receiver, contributed as a quarterback on Saturday to help the Stillman College football team celebrate a homecoming victory. Holloway threw three touchdown passes in the second half, and the Tigers routed Central State of Ohio, 44-13.

Holloway replaced starting quarterback Chris Mayabb, who was injured in the first half. “I think his neck was messed up or something,” Holloway said. “But he’s going to be all right. He’s coming back. “We were just trying to get a win for Stillman, trying to finish up strong so we can start off good for next year. We just knew we had to fight together and come strong in the second half as a family.”

Woo Woo Woo

ETTRICK, VA - The Virginia State University football team provided several memorable moments on its way to a CIAA Northern Division championship.

Ian White's 70-yard interception return for a touchdown in the homecoming win over Lincoln and Brian Berry's electrifying 54-yard touchdown reception in the season finale at St. Paul's spring to mind. But no moment was more meaningful than the third play of the Trojans' final series in a road game at Bowie State.

Trailing 15-10 late in the fourth quarter, quarterback Jarred Battle hit wide receivers Timothy Paulk and Brian Berry on consecutive short out routes to start the drive. Battle, who had struggled all game, took a snap from midfield on the next play and found a wide-open Paulk on an out-and-up route for the game-winning touchdown with 1:07 remaining.

Albany State Rams still No. 1 in region poll, await playoff foe

The NCAA will announce the 24-team Division II playoff pairings on Sunday

ALBANY, GA — Guess who’s still on top of the latest Division II Super Regional football rankings? That would be none other than the Albany State Rams (10-0), who retain their No. 1 spot in the NCAA rankings released Wednesday after defeating Fort Valley State, 12-7, in the Fountain City Classic last Saturday.

ASU, which is set for its seventh consecutive appearance in the NCAA playoffs, won the SIAC Championship by beating FVSU, and earned a bye for the first week of the playoffs, which open Nov. 20. The Rams lead the pack of six teams in the rankings, the Top 6 of which earn a playoff spot.

County recruits bolster VSU Trojans

First cousins are combining to put the “foot” in football at Virginia State University (VSU).

Justin Parker and Billy Rudd, the “kickin’ cousins,” give the Trojans a strong Chesterfield presence, along with dynamic defensive back Howard Spencer Jr. Coach Andrew Faison’s squad entered the final week of the season (at St. Paul’s) with the chance to win the CIAA North and advance to the Nov. 13 CIAA championship game in Durham.

The overall CIAA kingpin earns an automatic berth in the NCAA Division II playoffs. A trip to the playoffs would be a first for VSU, but then again, it’s the first time first cousins have supplied all the kicking. Place-kicking Parker, a senior and Matoaca High graduate, has nailed all six field goals this season (long of 39) and is 28-for-30 in extra points.

Exama leads GSU to 35-0 homecoming win

Saturday was homecoming for Grambling, but one of the happiest fans at Eddie Robinson Stadium might have been a visitor attending her first game of the season. The Concordia Hornets showed early they should not be taken as lightly as the 82-7 rout in the teams' previous meeting might indicate.

Concordia's offense drove the ball 51 yards on the game's opening drive and came to the line of scrimmage looking for more on second down from the 24, but Grambling linebacker Cliff Exama had other ideas. The junior intercepted Concordia quarterback Sherman Stephens...
