WSSU's Maynor turns down offer from North Carolina A&T

Connell Maynor of Winston-Salem State has turned down an offer to be the next football coach at N.C. A&T.

Maynor, who led the Rams to an 8-2 record this past season, had his first interview with A&T officials last week but wasn't offered the job. That all changed on Friday when Rod Broadway, the coach at Grambling State, turned down an offer from A&T.  Maynor was asked back to campus at A&T on Friday afternoon and was offered the job.

"They offered it to me and, after considering it, I had to say no," said Maynor, 42, who is a 1995 graduate of N.C. A&T, where he was an All-MEAC quarterback. "The timing just wasn't right and in the best interest of myself and my family, I couldn't take the job."

Broadway spurns A&T; will remain Grambling's football coach

Updated: 1/28/2011, 6:45 p.m.

Rod Broadway will not be N.C. A&T's next head football coach.

In a conference call Friday morning, Broadway told the Grambling State University President's Executive Committee he will stay with the Tigers.
At noon, Broadway attended a kickoff news conference in Monroe, La., to announce a new two-year series between Grambling and Louisiana-Monroe.

Broadway remains Grambling State coach

Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) - Grambling State announced on Friday that Rod Broadway will remain as its head football coach after he had been a leading candidate for the opening at North Carolina A&T.

Published reports said Broadway would become North Carolina A&T's head coach and Grambling State took down bios of Broadway and the rest of the football coaches from its official athletic website.

But on Friday morning, Grambling State said in an email that Broadway had announced to Grambling State University President's Executive Committee that he would remain at the Southwestern Athletic Conference university.

Grambling's Rod Broadway nears departure

Excerpt:
GRAMBLING — Grambling State head football coach Rod Broadway appears to be on his way to taking the same position at North Carolina A&T University.

“Right now, Rod Broadway is still our head football coach and I think he is mulling over an offer that has been extended by (North Carolina) A&T. That’s as much as I know,’’ Dawson said. “It’s really about him deciding what’s best for him and his family at this point.”

“I know there has been (an offer made). That’s where it is,” Dawson said. “He’s one of the best coaches in America. If it’s not A&T this year, somebody else will come.

Broadway reported to be leaving Grambling; players not yet informed of coach's status

Rod Broadway is reported to be leaving his post as head football coach at Grambling State to take the same position at North Carolina A&T.

Broadway and the rest of his coaching staff’s names were removed from the official Grambling athletics website, GSUTigers.com, on Thursday, and The Triangle Tribune (Durham, N.C.) cited “reliable sources” that Broadway had taken the job.

Neither North Carolina A&T nor Grambling has released an official statement on the matter.

Bonitta Best - SPORTS FLASH!

UPDATE: I talked to coach Broadway earlier today. He said the "deal isn't done yet." Stay tuned.

According to reliable sources, Grambling State football coach Rod Broadway is the new coach at N.C. A&T.  Broadway led the Tigers to a black college national championship and several SWAC championships.

Interestingly, his name is already off the roster on the Grambling website. Before Grambling, Broadway led N.C. Central to back-to-back CIAA titles and a black college national title. He and current NCCU coach Henry Frazier had a nice rivalry going in the SWAC and that is sure to continue now that both are together again in the MEAC.

Reports: Rod Broadway Could Be Heading To NC A&T

Greensboro, NC - The rumor mill is churning this afternoon. Unconfirmed reports out of Louisiana tell WFMY News 2 Sports that Grambling State's head football coach Rod Broadway is heading to NC A&T. Reports say it could be announced by this weekend.

Broadway has roots in the Tar Heel state. He coached at NC Central and played defensive lineman at UNC. The Grambling State Head Coach has won three conference championships, including two at NC Central and one at Grambling State.

North Carolina A&T 71, Clemson 77

CLEMSON, S.C. - Coming off of a week in which she was named MEAC Defensive Player of the Week, Jaleesa Sams recorded eight steals Monday night against Clemson, but the North Carolina A&T women's basketball team fell just short of an upset with a 77-71 loss to the Tigers at Littlejohn Coliseum.

Sams also scored 22 points and collected eight rebounds for the Aggies (4-7). Jaquayla Berry added 15 points. Sams needs just one point to reach 1,000 points for her career.

N.C. A&T trailed by six early in the second half. But Berry's layup with 7:53 to play moved the Aggies to within one at 56-55. The Tigers began to pull away as they scored the next seven points to take an eight-point lead.

Clemson Women's Basketball Snaps Skid with 77-71 Win

CLEMSON, SC - The Clemson women's basketball team snapped a six-game losing streak with a 77-71 win over North Carolina A&T (4-7) on Monday night in Littlejohn Coliseum. The Lady Tigers (7-8) shot a season-high 51.9 percent, and Shaniqua Pauldo scored 12 of her 22 points during a crucial second half run as Clemson pulled away.

Pauldo scored her 22 points on 9-14 shooting, including 14 in the second half, while senior Kirstyn Wright had 24 points, and tied a school and career record with six made three-point goals. She made her first six attempts, and her attempt at a school-record seventh straight rimmed out in the second half.

Herd women falter late in 57-53 loss to North Carolina A&T

HUNTINGTON, WV -- It was only fitting that the last set play of the Marshall University women's basketball game Saturday was a turnover. On a night when Marshall and North Carolina A&T combined for 53 turnovers, the Aggies used a 17-6 run over the last nine minutes of the game to earn a 57-53 win over the Thundering Herd. A crowd of only 189 in Cam Henderson Center saw the Herd drop to 2-6.

"I think we turned it over about every way you can and we didn't play tough down the stretch when we needed to," Marshall coach Royce Chadwick said. "We just didn't execute as well as I would have hoped at this stage of the game." Marshall had several chances to win down the stretch but didn't come up with points when needed.

Marshall Women's Basketball Falls Short Against North Carolina A&T, 57-53

Marshall’s Tynikki Crook posted her third double-double of the season with a game-high 25 points and 12 rebounds but it wasn’t enough to push the Herd past North Carolina A&T, 57-53, in Saturday night’s non-conference women’s basketball game at the Cam Henderson Center.

The Thundering Herd drops its second-straight, falling to 2-6 on the season while the Aggies improve to 3-4 and grab its first-ever win against MU bringing the series to 2-1 in favor of the Herd.

In a battle of two win teams, both struggled to gain control early combining for three turnovers in as many possessions. The Herd shot 14-of-20 from the field, 70%, in the opening stanza to grab a 33-30 advantage at the break.

Aggies Knock Off Marshall

HUNTINGTON, WV - North Carolina A&T used its strongest defensive performance of the season to defeat Marshall 57-53 Saturday night in women's basketball action at the Cam Henderson Center. Freshman Sabre Proctor led the Aggies with 15 points on 6-for-10 shooting. The Aggies shot just 31. 8 percent for the game but forced the Thundering Herd into 34 turnovers.

"Defense definitely won this game,'' said N.C. A&T head coach Patricia Cage-Bibbs. "We played extremely hard and kept our composure throughout the entire game."

N.C. A&T trailed 47-40 with nine minutes remaining. Jaquayla Berry capped a 10-2 run with a layup that gave the Aggies a 50-49 with four minutes to play. Layups by Nikia Gorham and Proctor put the Aggies ahead by three.

SWAC honors North Carolina A&T's Cage-Bibbs with Lifetime Award

The Southwestern Athletic Conference Alumni Association will honor N.C. A&T women's basketball coach Patricia Cage-Bibbs with a Lifetime Achievement Award tonight in Birmingham, Alabama.

Cage-Bibbs will not be in attendance because the Aggies will be en route to Huntington, W.Va., to face Marshall on Saturday, but NFL Super Bowl MVP quarterback and fellow Grambling alumnus Doug Williams will accept the honor on Cage-Bibbs' behalf.

In her 26th season as a head coach, Cage-Bibbs has more than 470 wins in stints at Grambling State (13 seasons), Hampton (seven seasons) and N.C. A&T (six seasons).

Getting sacked painful for A&T's Lee

Coach Alonzo Lee was fired on December 1, 2010, now one of four headed coaches sacked in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference

GREENSBORO, N.C. -- The wound is still open, the injury still fresh. There's no blood, no bruising, nothing visible at all. But you can hear the hurt in his voice. Alonzo Lee isn't the N.C. A&T football coach anymore. And the tough old linebacker -- a Division II All-American in his playing days -- didn't get to say goodbye to his players.

"It's like getting your heart cut out," Lee said.

The last team meeting was the sleepy Saturday after Thanksgiving, one week after the last loss in the Aggies' 1-10 season. "We sat down and really talked about being totally committed," Lee said. "I told them, 'Next season starts today, and it starts in study hall. ... We can't change what happened on the field this year. Let's win off the field in the classroom.' "

N.C. A&T fires football coach

GREENSBORO — N.C. A&T fired football coach Alonzo Lee on Monday after one year, 10 months and 13 days on the job. Lee ends his first job as a head coach with a 6-16 record. George Ragsdale, a former star running back at A&T and an Aggies assistant coach for 12 seasons, will oversee the program until the school hires a new coach.

“We’re going to identify the best candidate as quickly as we can,” said Earl Hilton, A&T’s interim athletics director. “What shape the search takes will be determined by how quickly we can find the right coach.”

Asked if there were already possible candidates, Hilton responded: “None that I can discuss.” Lee, who inherited a football program penalized by the NCAA for poor performance in its Academic Progress Rate, said the decision took him by surprise.

N.C. A&T rides play of Coleman, Hill

GREENSBORO, N.C. -- In the aftermath of N.C. A&T's wild overtime win over Norfolk State on Saturday, Aggies head coach Jerry Eaves had already taken off his coat, loosened his tie and unbuttoned his top button. As he took the walk to his seat in the postgame interview room, Eaves carried a telling look -- one of exhaustion, joy and most clearly, relief.

"I can't complain," Eaves deadpanned in response to how he was doing. Talk about an understatement. Thanks to 25 points after intermission from Marc Hill and a brilliant all-around effort from center Thomas Coleman, A&T escaped with an 89-81 win.

Norfolk State loses league opener in OT

GREENSBORO, N.C. - After committing a foul in the final seconds of overtime, Norfolk State forward Kyle O'Quinn pounded the ball on the floor over and over again. The score was already out of reach and his foul had no effect on the outcome, but O'Quinn couldn't help himself. His team had been so close, only to see a late lead crumble away - again.

"For them to shoot the way they did and for us to stay that close, we let it slip out of our hands," O'Quinn said of his team's 89-81 loss to North Carolina A&T (5-3). "It kind of makes you mad at the end if you don't come out the victor." The game quickly boiled down to a battle between the two tallest players on the court.

North Carolina A&T Dismisses Head Football Coach

Coach Alonzo Lee ends A&T career with 5 wins, 16 losses.
Greensboro, NC -- North Carolina A&T State University announced Monday their head football coach Alonzo Lee was dismissed. Lee was named head football coach January 2009 and finished the 2010 season with a 1-10 record.

According to a statement from the school, George Ragsdale, current A&T assistant head football coach, will serve as interim head football coach until a new head coach is named. "Ragsdale's collegiate and professional experience will prove to be beneficial to our football program during this time of transition," said A&T Chancellor Harold L. Martin, Sr.

A&T's inside game is too much for Greensboro College

GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Thomas Coleman scored 14 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to lead N.C. A&T over Greensboro College 79-58 on Friday night, but it wasn't the kind of performance Aggies coach Jerry Eaves wanted.

"I think we overlooked Greensboro College,'' Eaves said. "We didn't play with the enthusiasm that we needed, and we also shot the ball poorly. It was good to get a win, but I think we had our minds on what is going to happen on Monday (against UNCG). It's never good to look ahead when you have an opponent staring you in the face."

The Aggies (3-3) led 43-23 at halftime and led by as many as 22, 43-21, before a jumper by Luqman Tijani with 37 seconds left before the break pulled the Pride within 20.

Sylvester's TD helps FAMU prevail over N.C. A&T in OT

Greensboro, N.C. - Redshirt freshman quarterback Austin Trainor has never been shy about saying he could take the Florida A&M football team to a possible Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference championship.

He got off to a good start Saturday in his first collegiate start, carrying the Rattlers to a 22-19 victory in overtime over North Carolina A&T. Trainor, who just two years ago was playing for North Florida Christian, spent the afternoon at Aggies Stadium mixing his booming passes with the bulldozing running of Philip Sylvester. What the duo accomplished, along with two big interceptions by linebacker Brandon Hepburn, kept alive FAMU's chance at the MEAC title. It improved to 6-3, 5-1 in the MEAC with two games remaining.

NC A&T's Lee has maintained touch with Taylor

GREENSBORO, N.C. — One heck of a chess match unfolded Saturday afternoon at Aggie Stadium. Joe Taylor sent his Florida A&M Rattlers to checkmate Alonzo Lee's North Carolina A&T Aggies. At the end, the Rattlers captured Lee's king, 22-19, even though it took overtime.

No surprise there that the football game played out the way it did. Joe Taylor knows Alonzo Lee and vice versa. They went at each other with a sense of purpose — Lee looking for a win and Taylor looking for something spectacular from the redshirt freshman he decided to start at quarterback over Martin Ukpai.

Former Lincoln player starring at N.C. A&T

GREENSBORO, N.C. — Despite its losing record coming into Saturday's game, North Carolina A&T has been getting impressive individual performances each week. The list includes former Lincoln High School standout D'Vonte Graham.

Never mind that at times he has to cope with homesickness. Graham has been the most efficient player in the secondary for the Aggies. Coming into the game Graham was tied for the most interceptions in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference with four. In addition to 11 tackles, he also has eight pass breakups. He picked off Florida A&M's Austin Trainor twice Saturday.

North Carolina A&T Aggies Blow Out Howard Bison, 52-32

The Howard Bison may not be winning, but they are progressing. Although they fell to 1-6 after suffering a 52-32 road loss to the North Carolina A&T Aggies on Oct. 23, Howard scored their highest point total this season behind freshman quarterback Randy Liggins, Jr. Howard entered the game averaging just 11 points per game, but lit up the scoreboard in the losing effort.

Howard turned the ball over five times, and North Carolina A&T took full advantage, jumping out to a 14-0 lead after Jeremy Graham returned a fumble 38 yards for a score on Howard's opening drive of the game. Howard battled back behind Liggins, who threw consecutive scoring strikes to Brandon Drayton and Daley Gunter for 56 and 31 yards, but the team failed both two-point conversions to make it 14-12 at the end of the first quarter.

Aggies get first victory

GREENSBORO -- N.C. A&T coach Alonzo Lee couldn't help but crack a furtive smile before addressing the media following his team's 52-32 runaway win against Howard. When your team came in on a 10-game losing streak -- a run that began at last year's homecoming -- you're allowed to smile.

Lee reverted to his usual stoic demeanor after a few seconds, but there was no question how much the victory meant to him and the program. "I first want to thank God for a long-time-coming victory," Lee said. "There's no doubt I was just as excited for the young men."

Wheeler Brown dismissed as A&T athletics director

GREENSBORO, N.C. — In his most high-profile move since a student collapsed and died in an unofficial track practice, N.C. A&T Chancellor Harold Martin fired athletics director Wheeler Brown on Friday.

“I commit to you that I will take constructive steps to move our athletics program in a different direction,” Martin said during a news conference at the school.

Brown’s dismissal comes nearly two months after sophomore Jospin “Andre” Milandu, 20, of Knightdale, died on Aug. 19 due to complications of sickle cell trait. He was one of several students participating in the tryout without medical paperwork required by the NCAA.

Chancellor Memo

Courtesy: NC A&T Sports Information
Release: 10/15/2010

TO: University Community
FROM: Chancellor Harold L. Martin, Sr.
DATE: October 15, 2010
RE: Milandu Internal Investigation Closed

On yesterday, the North Carolina Office of the Chief Medical Examiner released the autopsy report for our former student, Jospin "Andre" Milandu, showing that he died as a result of "complications of sickle cell trait." Andre, a sophomore from Knightdale, North Carolina, was described by his peers as a caring and kind-hearted young man. His presence has been and will continue to be missed at North Carolina A&T State University.

This continues to be a sad time for the University family, the Department of Athletics, and one beyond measure for the Milandu family. As a parent, my heart continues to ache for Andre's family and friends.

We deeply regret Andre's loss. Since my arrival at North Carolina A&T, I have consistently stressed the importance of adherence to University policies, practices and procedures with all University administrators. This has been reaffirmed throughout my tenure, and even more so since this tragic incident. I commit to you that I will take constructive steps to move our athletics program in a different direction.

Today, I have discontinued the employment of our Athletics Director, Wheeler Brown. I have asked Dr. Deborah Callaway, Special Assistant to the Chancellor, to assume administrative oversight for the immediate future until an interim Athletics Director is named within the next week. I will immediately launch an aggressive, national search for a new leader of our Athletics program.

This new leadership for Athletics will be expected to bring significant managerial and leadership skills, knowledge of Athletics, the ability to develop a high performing organization and the ability to manage the necessary cultural changes to ensure enhanced services, transparency and individual accountability.

Let us continue to pray for the Milandu family.

A&T's new 3-4 defense still a work in progress

GREENSBORO, N.C. -- There's irony at Aggie Stadium this homecoming weekend. Morgan State comes to town Saturday still running the aggressive 4-3 defensive scheme installed five years ago by then-coordinator Alonzo Lee.

"It's my same exact defense," Lee said. "Nothing has changed. Coach (Herbert) Parham was under me not only at Morgan, but at Hampton before that. He hasn't changed the defense we ran." But A&T has changed. Now in his second year as the Aggies head coach, Lee has reluctantly gone away from the scheme. Truth is, A&T can't run it. Not full-time, anyway.

Backfield powers TSU in Classic win

INDIANAPOLIS, IN — Even though Preston Brown is one of the top running backs in the Football Championship Subdivision, he's always concerned each week about losing his starting spot. Dante' Thomas showed why.

With Brown slowed in practice by a groin injury, Thomas took over the starting spot Saturday, rushing for a career-high 186 yards and two touchdowns in Tennessee State's 37-7 victory over North Carolina A&T in the Circle City Classic at Lucas Oil Stadium. Brown might not have been himself, but he was still pretty good. The second-leading rusher in the FCS added 145 yards, nine shy of his average.

Aggies coming home with 0-5 mark

INDIANAPOLIS -- The N.C. A&T football team ran out of luck at the Circle City Classic. The Aggies, who brought a 3-0 record at the event into Saturday's showdown against Tennessee State, couldn't draw from past success, dropping a 37-7 decision to the Tigers at Lucas Oil Stadium.

The Aggies, with previous victories over Southern (1994) and Tennessee State (1997 and 2005), were the only undefeated team in Classic history with at least three appearances. The game, which was established to showcase Historically Black Colleges and Universities, has been played each year since 1984.

"Coach (Alonzo) Lee told us we were 3-0 coming in, so we tried to keep the legacy alive," said Aggies junior running back Mike Mayhew, who finished ...

NCCU Eagles return to MEAC with win over NC A&T Aggies

DURHAM, N.C. -- Based on the recent history of the series, N.C. Central's 27-16 win over North Carolina A&T might count as a blowout in favor of the Eagles. Thanks to seven turnovers by the Aggies, NCCU was able to wrap up its biggest win over its biggest rival since winning 15-2 in 1988.

The past five game went down to the wire, with each settled on the final possession. A year ago, the Aggies took a 23-17 win in double overtime to break a three-game winning streak by NCCU. Now the Eagles (2-2) can claim four wins in five years over N.C. A T (0-4). After the game, NCCU coach Mose Rison was doused by his players with a cooler full of water as they all celebrated in front of the student section and band.

The crowd of 15,173 at O'Kelly-Riddick Stadium was the largest in school history, with more than 5,000 standing-room tickets being sold as festival admission at the track adjoining the stadium. The overflow crowd was on hand to watch the first game in Durham between the teams since 1992, which A T won 49-7.

Hampton Pirates Get Past North Carolina A&T Aggies

HAMPTON, VA – Coming into Saturday’s football game here at Armstrong Stadium, the Hampton University Pirates had not lost a season-opener since 2003. Behind the arm and legs of quarterback David Legree and running back Antwon Chisholm, the Pirates improved upon that streak after a 35-21 victory over the Aggies of North Carolina A&T.

Hampton improved to 2-1 on the season and a more important 2-0 in Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference play, while the Aggies dropped to 0-3 on the year and 0-2 in MEAC play.

The Pirates opened the game slowly as they would score just once in the first half on a 34-yard pass from Legree to Donte Davis for the first score of the game. The Aggies were not going to be outdone on the ensuing kick-off as Justin Ferrell retuned the kickoff 85 yards to tie the game at 7-7.

Legree's four TD passes lead Hampton past NC A&T 35-21

Hampton, VA - The scores came often as North Carolina A&T paid a visit to Armstrong Stadium on Saturday night. As the Aggies faced Hampton, two long-time college football rivals renewed a tradition. The Aggies and Hampton's Pirates have played for many years and are both members of MEAC. The contest turned into a scoring parade, with the Pirates winning, 35-21.

After a scoreless first quarter, the teams found the end zone. The scoring came within just a few seconds in the second period. Hampton's Donte Davis hauled in a 34-yard pass from David Legree. N.C. A&T answered quickly with a blazing 85-yard kickoff return by Justin Ferrell. The offenses, especially Hampton's, really moved into high gear in the second half.

Defenses zero in on A&T's running game

GREENSBORO, N.C. — What's wrong with Mike Mayhew? Why has the tailback who was last season's MEAC rookie of the year struggled to gain yards in A&T's first two games?

Mayhew is fine. But the arithmetic is certainly against him right now. When the Aggies (0-2, 0-1 MEAC) lost starting quarterback Lewis Kindle with a knee injury in an August practice, it did more than simply set back A&T's passing game.

Mayhew, who averaged 4.2 yards per carry and rushed for six touchdowns last year, became the focal point of opposing defenses. In losses to Winston-Salem State and Norfolk State, the Aggies routinely faced defenses crowding the line of scrimmage with eight — sometimes nine — players.

Fumble return keys Norfolk State's 23-14 win

NORFOLK, VA - Hit them when they're up, hit them when they're (headed) down. That's Norfolk State linebacker Corwin Hammond's philosophy on dealing with quarterbacks. Hammond said he was just trying to punish North Carolina A&T quarterback Shelton Morgan when he helped Norfolk State pull away in a 23-14 win in front of 14,550 at Dick Price Stadium on Saturday.

"He was going down, so you might as well hit him," Hammond said. "You might as well. If he's going to run it, he's going to get hit." Trailing 13-7 with 8:12 left in the third quarter, the Aggies (0-2) were moving the ball well for the first time against NSU (1-1). North Carolina A&T finished with just six first downs, but Morgan looked ready to move the chains for the third time on the drive.
