UMES Brummell named NTCA Coach of the Year/Three Lady Hawks named All-Americans

The National Tenpins Coaches Association (NTCA) has named the University of Maryland Eastern Shore Head Women’s Bowling coach Sharon Brummell their 2008 Division 1 National Coach of the Year. “Wow,” said Brummell, a four-time Mid-Eastern Athletic (MEAC) Coach of the Year. “What a compliment, to be voted the Division 1 National Coach of the Year by your colleagues is truly an honor and a humbling experience.”

Brummell led the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) to their fourth MEAC Championship and the first ever NCAA National Championship in Women’s Bowling this past season and was rewarded for her efforts by being selected for the honor. The National Championship is just the second in school history and the first NCAA title. Brummell also became the first woman and African-American to lead her team to an NCAA Bowling National Championship.

The Lady Hawks Bowling Team have earned three All-Americans for the second straight year and with it move their total up to seven in the last three seasons. The awards, named from the National Tenpins Coaches Association selected Kristina Frahm (Oswego, Ill./Oswego East H.S.), Maria Rodriguez (Ibague Tolima, Columbia/La Presentacion) and NCAA Tournament Most Valuable Bowler Jessica Worsley (Brick, N.J./Brick Memorial H.S.) as the latest three Lady Hawks to earn All-American status.

Frahm, the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Tournament Most Outstanding Performer, earned First-Team All-American status and with it was voted the Division 1Rookie of the Year. The freshman “sensation “ knocked down over 15,000 pins individually during the season and averaged an impressive 201.83 over the course of the year.

Rodriguez, a Second-Team All-American selection was equally impressive. Also a freshman, Rodriguez only bowled the second half of the season and still managed to take out over 8,000 pins and post an average of 204.7. Rodriguez earned All-Tournament Team honors at two of the biggest events of the year for UMES, the MEAC Championships and the NCAA Championships.

Worsley, one of just two seniors on the team was named a Third-Team All-American. The NCAA Tournament MVP, Worsley was as clutch as they come in big spots. She hit the “big four,” 4-6-7-10 split against Arkansas State to seal a win early in the NCAA Championship and then a critical 2-10 split against Vanderbilt. A former MEAC MVP, Worsley was also named the UMES Female Athlete of the Year the past two seasons.

He says he's very excited to see what UMES is doing as a part of the university system of Maryland.

Lieutenant Governor Brown says, "Under Dr. Thompson's leadership, what you've seen is a campus that is focusing on where the needs are in Maryland." "The school has developed programs that make a contribution to meaningful higher education in the State."

Norfolk State fights back against Maryland-Eastern Shore

NORFOLK, Va. – As the ball rolled under his glove and into left-center field, Norfolk State shortstop Moriba George dropped his chin to his chest in frustration.

After a heart-breaking loss to North Carolina A&T on Thursday, the last thing George wanted to do was commit an error to spot Maryland Eastern-Shore a lead. But that’s exactly what happened in Friday’s elimination game in the MEAC Tournament at Marty L. Miller Field.

But George and the Spartans redeemed themselves and stayed alive with a 7-2 victory. The Spartans were scheduled to play Delaware State in another elimination game later in the evening.

B-CU pounds out 14 hits in run-rule contest
Norfolk, Va. - Hiram Burgos proved his worth on the mound and Osvaldo Torres provided the hitting power as Bethune-Cookman University breezed through the University of Maryland Eastern Shore, 13-1 on Thursday morning in the first round of the annual Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Baseball Tournament at Marty L. Miller Baseball Field in Norfolk, Va.

B-CU did not take any chances with the opposition on Thursday as the top-seeded Wildcats (34-20) went with the Pitcher of the Year--Hiram Burgos, as the opening starter in back-to-back years. B-CU's Francisco Rodriguez collected the award last year and started against the Hawks as well in 2007.

UMES Captures Bowling Title, Makes History as NCAA NATIONAL CHAMPIONS!!

Photo: UMES Freshman Kristina Frahm (left) made All-Tournament Team along with the Tournament's Most Valuable Bowler, senior Jessica Worsley (right).

The title is the first NCAA National Championship women's title ever at the DI level by a historically black college or university (HBCU) and the first time a woman coach has won a bowling championship.

Press Release: Courtesy of NCAA

Maryland-Eastern Shore made NCAA bowling history Saturday night as it captured its first NCAA Women’s Bowling title since the sport’s NCAA sanction in 2004. Maryland-Eastern Shore’s Head Coach Sharon Brummel also became the first woman head coach to lead her team to a title.

“Somebody told me I was the first woman to win a championship,” Brummel said. “We’ve been to all five championships and finally a woman wins. It’s a wonderful feeling, it really is.”

The Hawks fought to be in the championship, as they were down three games to Vanderbilt in this afternoon’s elimination match. Momentum shifted the Hawk’s way and Maryland-Eastern Shore defeated Vanderbilt to contend for the championship.

“I’m speechless,” Brummel said. “After last year I felt that we were contending for the championship. Today, these young ladies fought. When were bowling against Vanderbilt earlier today and we were down three games, it got a little scary. Then Jessica Worsley decides to pick up a 2-10 split and it just seemed to change the whole momentum of the game and they came out fighting today when we were starting out in the championship.”

“I guess we all wanted to win,” Brommel said. “Jessica’s been here the whole four years. She’s gone to four national championships and on her way out she wanted to go out as a champion and she really went out as a champion.”

Maryland-Eastern Shore anchor Jessica Worsley stepped up for the Hawks in both matches today and emerged as the Most Valuable Bowler for the 2008 National Championship.
Photo: Jessica Worsley, Most Valuable Bowler Award winner.

“It was just a dream even making the finals last year and finishing second,” Worsley said. “Most people can’t even said they’ve done that in their career. Just going out on top and finishing first my senior year, words can’t describe how great that feels. I couldn’t have asked for a better coaching staff or team to finish my career with and winning the national championship was just the icing on the cake.”

Maryland-Eastern Shore claimed the title with a 4-2 win over Arkansas State. The Hawks took an early lead in the first game, as Arkansas State had two open frames to start the game. However, Arkansas State came on strong during the fourth frame, as sophomore Maggie Adams started a series of six strikes for the Indians. Maryland-Eastern Shore was unable to overcome the deficit and fell, 179-223, to Arkansas State in the first game.

Maryland-Eastern Shore’s come back was quick in the second game as they out shot the Indians, 200-181. The Hawks recorded seven spares and three strikes, while Arkansas State held two open frames to begin the game. The teams were tied at 1-1 heading into the third game.

Despite two open frames to start game three, Arkansas State’s anchor Marissa Martinek helped the Indians to victory with back-to-back strikes in the tenth frame. Arkansas State defeated Maryland-Eastern Shore, 182-180.

Maryland-Eastern Shore answered back with a 217-164 win over Arkansas State in the fourth game. UMES was on fire with six strikes and five spares in the game, which brought them to a 2-2 draw with Arkansas State.

The Hawks kept rolling to a 3-2 lead over Arkansas State in the fifth game. Two strikes in both the eighth and ninth frames gave the Hawks a strong 175-152 win over the Indians.

With momentum on its side, Maryland-Eastern Shore capped the night with a 174-170 victory over Arkansas State to capture the 2008 Women’s Bowling Championship title.

Following the awards ceremony, five championship bowlers were recognized with all-tournament team honors. Brittany Garcia (Vanderbilt), Vicki Spratford (New Jersey City), Maggie Adams (Arkansas State), Jessica Worsley (Maryland-Eastern Shore) and Maria Rodriguez (Maryland-Eastern Shore) were each recognized, while Worlsey claimed the Most Valuable Bowler.

A tape-delay of the championship game will be broadcast on ESPN 2 at 6 p.m. Central on Monday, April 14.

UMES plays Arkansas State at 8:00 p.m. (ET) LIVE on ESPNU for NCAA National Bowling Championship

OMAHA, Neb. - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) thought they would have the advantage today. After all, they are a fresh oil team. When they faced Vanderbilt yesterday to start they day they topped them 4-0. Suddenly the tables were turned and the hot team was Vanderbilt who went up 3-0. Don't call it a comeback, call it fate, UMES rebounded to pick up four straight games, riding the back of anchor Jessica Worsley and advance to the National Championship to face Arkansas State.

UMES faces the team they defeated yesterday in eight games, ASU in the national championship match.

UMES stays in winners bracket; downs Vandy and Arkansas State

Hawks get the bye and guarantee they will play on Saturday.

OMAHA, Neb. - In one of the most exciting matches in the history of the NCAA Women's Bowling Tournament, The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) and Arkansas State University (UMES) went to an extra game to decide who stayed in and who left the winner's bracket. The second ranked Hawks proved to be the better team on this day as they got down to ASU 2-0 but rallied to tie the series at two. They got down 3-2 but tied the match and sent it to a crucial game seven. It wouldn't end there as UMES and ASU tied at 173. The Lady Hawks came out on top however, and won game eight to send the Indians to the loser's bracket.

Brummell's team survived the spunky ASU team and now earns a bye until 6:20 p.m. ET when they play the winner of the University of Central Missouri and Vanderbilt. Vanderbilt edged Sacred Heart 4-3 in their second match of the day while Central Missouri fell to New Jersey City University (NJCU) 4-3.

UMES passes the hat to Allen

Veteran coach with MEAC experience takes over men's basketball program

PRINCESS ANNE -- Standing under banners that boast of the past success of the men's basketball program at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore on Thursday afternoon, director of athletics Keith Davidson introduced Frankie Allen as the 10th head coach of the program in its 27-year span as a Division I program. The new coach donned a UMES hat when introduced and received a standing ovation.

"Let me just say this, it fits," Allen said after putting on the cap. "Not only does it fit, it feels good." The hiring makes a nice birthday present for Allen, who just turned 59 on Monday and received a call from UMES president Thelma B. Thompson sending her good wishes. Allen will make $110,000 per year during his four-year contract, looking for the program's second Division I winning season and the first since the 1993-94 campaign.

The Hawks have had one winning season in 27 years of Division I basketball, five coaches in seven years, and 14 consecutive losing seasons. Best decision Thelma Thompson, President, could ever make--hiring a coach with a winning history of making losers competitive. Frankie Allen is the right man for the job, but I'm not so sure about his No.1 assistant coach, Jamal Brown.

Photo: UMES plans to sign Jamal Brown on April 21 as No.1 assistant coach to Coach Frankie Allen.

Brown's career at South Carolina State ended badly (fired) after one season as the head coach due to allegations of an "unprofessional relationship with a female trainer." Brown is married; he did have a star playing career at S.C. State and led the Bulldogs to the 1996 NCAA Division I Basketball Tournament.

The new Bulldogs Coach Tim Carter nearly cleaned house of Brown's recruits and the leftovers managed a 13-20 and 7-9 MEAC record for 8th place. We believe in second chances, but one does have to question the wisdom of Frankie Allen's decision to hire an unproven coach with no Baltimore, Philadelphia, New York, D.C., or New Jersey connections for recruiting. If UMES is going to improve, they must get inner city players to come to the Shore, and we are not speaking of Ocean City.

With Fang Mitchell at Coppin State, Todd Bozeman at Morgan State, Towson State, UMBC and Mount St. Mary's just completing an NCAA run, UMES will have an uphill battle to get 12-15 talented players. Princes Anne is not Nashville, Washington, D.C. or Baltimore County, and Allen will have difficulty in procuring quality players from the available lower 2nd and 3rd tier.

Let's move along; nothing much happening here with the Hawks program.

Delaware State and UMES Hawks split doubleheader

Photo: Mike Roberts threw a six hitter in the second game win for the Hawks. The 5-11/165 junior LHP is from Bel Air, MD/C. Milton Wright H.S.

PRINCESS ANNE, Md. - In one of the most exciting game played at Hawks Stadium in recent memory, the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) picked up a very important conference win over local rival Delaware State University (DSU) 2-1 in extra innings. The Hawks dropped game one of the doubleheader 12-7 but with the one win moved to 4-1 overall in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC).

Game two was the definition of a pitcher's duel. UMES southpaw Mike Roberts faced off against the Hornet's Josh Schmidt and both went the complete game each allowing just one earned run. It was Roberts' day however as he would pick up his second win of the season, allowing just six hits, one walk and recording six Ks.

Schmidt took the hard-luck loss, giving up five hits, one walk and ringing up 10 strike outs. He may have gotten the win, but we will never know because with two on no outs Phillip Vaughn hit a ball to DSU third baseman Jose Portella that looked like a routine out but he overthrew first base, Vaughn reached and Michael Guy, who led-off the inning with a single, scored from third, giving the Hawk's the win.

UMES Hawks Bowling wins third MEAC Title

#2 UMES tops #11 Delaware State for 4-1 for their fourth overall championship.

HAMPTON, Va. - Two games. That is the amount of baker games the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) dropped during the entire Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) championship as they topped Delaware State University (DSU) 4-1 in the best of seven baker game format in Sunday's final to secure their third straight women's bowling title and fourth overall. The one game came to the nation's 11th ranked team, DSU in the finals, the other to Norfolk State University (NSU) in the semi-finals. They won every other match via shut out.

The Lady Hawks took on the Lady Hornets in the finals. DSU defeated NSU 4-1 in the semi-final round for the right to face UMES earlier in the day. The Hawks topped the Hornets 169-158, 175-181, 183-181, 153-151 and 190-169 to secure the title.

"It was how it was supposed to be," said Head Coach Sharon Brummell. "The two teams in the finals were the two teams ranked in the nation. Everything played out correctly and it was a competitive final."

Hampton advances over Maryland-Eastern Shore

Photo: 20 points, 8 rebounds and senior leadership from Rachel Butler provided the Lady Pirates a another big win towards the MEAC Tournament Championship.

RALEIGH, N.C.-- Bad basketball can still lead to good results. The Hampton Pirates took what they could get in the second round of the MEAC Tournament Thursday — a 56-49 victory over Maryland Eastern Shore and a ticket to the semifinals vs N.C. A&T.

But getting there wasn’t pretty. A combined 5-for-31 on 3-point attempts and a 24.2 first half shooting percentage for the Pirates. But still, they advanced. “We might have been a little nervous. I talked to some of the freshman and tried to calm them down,” said Hampton guard Rachel Butler, one of the game’s bright spots, scoring 20 points.

And those eager underclassmen had prepared the pleasantries for their three senior leaders as a thank you for their four years of contributions.

The Hornets' 57-46 win over Maryland-Eastern Shore clinched the No. 3 seed in next week's Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Tournament.

Pitt Baseball Pummels Maryland Eastern Shore, 25-3

Princess Anne, Maryland - A last-minute schedule change brought the Pitt baseball team one of it's most successful days in the program's 69-year history. The Panthers were scheduled to travel to Chillicothe, Ohio this weekend for a three-game series with Youngstown State, but inclement weather conditions forced Pitt to make a quick schedule change. Instead of Ohio, the Panthers traveled to Maryland Eastern Shore for a weekend-series against the Hawks and Rhode Island.

In the opening game of the weekend, Pitt (2-2) rolled to a 25-3 win over host Maryland Eastern Shore (0-6) Friday afternoon. The win marked the 21st time in the program's history that the Panthers have scored 20 or more runs.

UMES Hawks, perched in third place, eye second

Photo: University of Maryland Eastern Shore head women basketball coach Fred Batchelor (4th Year).

4 regular-season games left

PRINCESS ANNE, MD -- University of Maryland Eastern Shore women's basketball coach Fred Batchelor, not long ago, had been reluctant to talk about where his team was in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference standings. The Hawks only recently crossed the halfway point of the MEAC schedule, and there was a lot of basketball left, Batchelor would point out, and a lot of room to move up or down in the standings.

Well, after a weekend road trip that included a loss to the MEAC's top team, North Carolina A&T, and a big victory against Norfolk State, the Hawks are sitting in a tie for third place. They have just four games remaining, three of which are at home, beginning with Saturday's homecoming contest against Florida A&M.

UMES Lady Hawks crush Norfolk State 84-65

NORFOLK, Va. - It started nine games ago. The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) went on a seven game winning streak in conference play before they dropped their last two contests. That streak began with a win over Norfolk State University (NSU) and the Lady Hawks hope the streak begins anew as they toppled that same Spartan team 84-65 Monday night on the campus of NSU.

April McBride, Tiffany Reid and Queenique Tyler all posted 16 points in the game. For Tyler it is a new career high while fellow freshmen Casey Morton added 15 points. Both McBride and Reid had a double double as they grabbed 13 and 10 rebounds respectively.

With the win, UMES improves to 8-4 in league play and stands third in the MEAC tied with Morgan State and Delaware State, both of whom UMES has defeated this season.

North Carolina A&T wins shootout over UMES Hawks

Photo: UMES Ed Tyson scored 30 points (10 of 18, 5 of 5 3-pointers), 4 assists and 1 steal on the Aggies. The 6-2/200 sharp shooting guard is from Baltimore, MD Walbrook H.S.

GREENSBORO -- Austin Ewing scored 22 points, and N.C. A&T used a strong shooting performance to take a 95-85 victory over Maryland-Eastern Shore on Saturday.

The Aggies (13-11, 7-4 MEAC) took advantage of a hot hand in the first half and ran up a 48-31 lead, and that was the difference. The edge was built on 59.3 percent field goal shooting, compared to 37 percent shooting for the Hawks (4-22, 2-9).

Both teams heated up in the second half. UMES hit 61.1 percent of its shots, while A&T improved on the opening half with a 63 percent effort.

Ed Tyson hit all five of his 3-point shots and scored a game-high 30 points for the Hawks. Gary Lee scored 17, Ishmawlyl McFadden 13 and B.J. Nimocks 10 for UMES.

North Carolina A&T flatten UMES Lady Hawks

Photo: Ta'Wuana Cook scored 28 points and 5 assists in leading six Aggies players in double figures. The 5-8 sophomore guard from Fayetteville, N.C. Seventy-First H.S. is our choice for Player of the Year in the MEAC.

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The North Carolina A&T women’s basketball team won again with a 105-79 win over Maryland-Eastern Shore Saturday afternoon at Irvin-Corbett Court.

Once again the Aggies looked dominant against a MEAC team in the top half of the standings. And once again, the Aggies made it difficult for a team to figure out which Aggie to slow down as they placed six players in double figures led Ta’Wuana Cook’s 28 points and five assists.

The Aggies (18-5, 11-0) played so well, even the normally hard-to-please head coach Patricia Cage-Bibbs hinted for the first time this season that the 2007-08 Aggies might be a pretty good team.

“I don’t think there is any question we are hard to defend,’’ said Bibbs. “Last year people felt like if they stopped Amber Bland we would struggle. But this year we have people who can score, people who can finish, people who can make things happen and I don’t see anything wrong with that.”
