Softball Preview 2015: SU Jaguars usher in a new era

COURTESY SOUTHERN UNIVERSITY ATHLETICS
BATON ROUGE, Louisiana -- Head coach John Garris will begin his first season as at the helm of the Southern Lady Jaguars softball program and his 12th overall (237-273-1) at the 2015 season opener against Nicholls State in the Tangi Tourism Lion Classic in Hammond Friday.

Garris, who takes over the softball program after serving as an assistant last season, was named head coach in August, giving him the opportunity to fully mold his squad.

“With our new players they get to become acclimated,” said Coach Garris. “With our returning players we make sure everybody is assimilated and is integrated properly into the program; we get a chance to get into details with individual skills, and team concepts.

We spent a lot of time on team concepts.”

Southern enters the 2015 season after finishing 11-37 overall, and 8-9 in Southwestern Athletic Conference play. The Lady Jaguars finish a surprising second in the Western Division, sweeping Arkansas Pine-Bluff, and defeating Grambling 2-1 and recording a big upset over Prairie View. Southern faced Jackson State, Mississippi Valley, and Grambling in the 2014 SWAC Tournament going 1-2 sending heated rival Grambling State packing. Out of the nine losses, Southern lost by only four runs or less, and out of those contest they were defeated by one point. Versus Southeastern, down six to one going into the sixth inning and clawed all the way back to one point, but they couldn’t plate that last runner in from scoring position.

Coach Garris is excited about his schedule this season.

“We like the way our schedule is set up, we play our away games in February and home games later in the season; our fans can come out and support us.”

The first six games of the season will be away from the safe confine of Lady Jaguar Field on the Southern University campus. The Lady Jaguars will face Nicholls State to start the season in Hammond on Feb. 6 and again in Thibodaux on Feb. 11. Southern will travel to Ruston and will participate in the Louisiana Tech Tournament and will face Detroit Mercy and Louisiana Tech.

“We hope to compete, we play Louisiana Tech, Southeastern Louisiana, Nicholls State, Detroit Mercy. If we look at those teams, and say ‘we better lace them up’ but you don’t go and say ‘we out of our league.’” said Garris referencing the Lady Jaguars’ non-conference tilt. He also explains, step one is to compete hard and execute well, and the Lady Jags will have a chance to have some success.

Southern then plays six straight home games before the SWAC round-up in Longview, Texas, where the Lady Jags will face the SWAC eastern division. Last season, Southern was competitive in all but one game, losing by four to Jackson State and falling to Mississippi Valley State, Alcorn and Alabama State by one. Southern’s lone win of the round-up arrived when the Lady Jaguars blanked Alabama A&M 9-0.

After the 2015 round-up, the Lady Jaguars will play consecutive division series versus western division heavy weight Texas Southern and bitter rival Grambling State.

“We want to catch up to them. First step is to go out and compete against TSU, hopefully the fans come out it’s like running a marathon; it’s tough but every encouragement goes a long way”

From their Southern will head on the road for two consecutive series against the University of Arkansas-Pine Bluff and Prairie View A&M. Last season, Southern swept Pine Bluff and defeated Prairie View 2-1 in an upset. Southern plans to take an aggressive approach in league play, striving to win two or three divisional series in an effort to close the gap against defending western division champion Texas Southern.

Coach Garris explained that the contest last season was not even close, “If we can compete with everyone on our schedule, anything can happen.”

Junior Alicia Barajas (Carson, CA) had a team high 42 hits last season. She has a natural fluid swing with a great eye, but it’s her defensive skills that caught the eye of Coach Garris. Barajas executed several 4-6-5 double plays last season, which is a rarity in softball. Southern led the SWAC in double-plays last season.

“(Alicia) is fun to watch… a special athlete,” said Coach Garris.

Junior Delphia Holmes of Lake Jackson, Texas, sophomores Kayleigh Thomas of Jeffersonville, Ind. and Sarah Miller of Marietta, Ga. return for the Lady Jags. Coach Garris explained that each pitcher represent a different set of skills that complement each other. Coach also pointed out that this is a tight knit group, which works hard and together. A point of emphasis this season is to pitch smart. Another priority has been defense, fielding their position.

Four players will vie for playing time in the outfield including senior Danielle Jackson of Harvey and freshmen Bailey Rankin of Shelbyville, Ky. This unit has been performing well in scrimmages. It’s a versatile group, they are very good on the bases, not just with speed but with situational base running. they are doing well in the field, and offensively. Coach pointed out that a lot of the improvements have been attributed with how hard the unit has trained and Coach Shepherd tutelage.

With four players vying for time in the outfield, the Lady Jaguars’ infield is shaping up with Barajas returning to shortstop to join sophomore Amanda Pacheco of Highland, Calif. who saw a lot of time at second base last season. Coach Garris sees Barajas getting stronger and more solid at shortstop. He pointed out, through some stretches last season, Barajas played extremely well and made some phenomenal plays. For this season, Garris is hoping it all comes together from start to finish after Barajas returned in great shape, which has helped her performance on the field.

Sophomore Jade Luke of New Orleans is another returner who Garris expects will get a lot of looks at third base. Luke has exceled in the classroom, which has translated into being a good student of the game. Freshman Jamani Greer of Chattanooga, Tenn. will compete for some playing time as well, Coach stated that in the last few weeks it’s like a light bulb went off, she is learning the system that is not quite simple. Freshmen Sydnie Andrews (Missouri City, Texas) is a versatile player, who will be counted on to help Southern fill holes in the outfield and infield rotation.

“Your freshman year, no matter how good you are, how bright you are, no matter how dedicated you are, it’s just a big challenge,” said Garris. “Your swimming in the deep end of the pool now.”

Junior Macy Maurer of Bryan, Texas, junior Hailey Guitreau of Maurepas, La. and freshman Kiara Suttles of Chattanooga, Tenn. are the Lady Jags catchers.

Entering his first season Coach Garris also fields a young coaching staff that is energetic and has hit the ground rolling. Former Southern catcher and graduate assistant coach Harley Roller joins assistant coach Ashanti Shepherd on the Lady Jaguars coaching staff. Former Southern first baseman Megan Maile will serve as a student coach.

Coach Shepherd is in her first year at Southern. She was a 2013 All-MEAC first team selection her senior year, leading FAMU to the MEAC Tournament. She also ranked 40th in the nation in stolen bases. She spent time this past summer playing professional softball in China. Coach Shepherd spearheads the academic performance of the Lady Jaguars this season and, since her arrival at Southern, grades has vastly improved. Her duties also include managing Southern’s short game, base running and outfielders.

“(Ashanti) brings a winning background and she will bring a lot of new ideas and perspective to the program.”

Coach Roller was recruited and played at Southern before graduating this past December. She appeared in 103 games for the Lady Jaguars as a catcher and posted career batting average of .283. A student of the game, Roller was able to absorb the nuance of Coach Garris’ system and will work with the pitching staff this season. Her other job duties include recruiting and maintain the program’s administrative tasks.

“(Harley) having been a catcher she understands our system. She brings so much to the table with recruiting and the administration side because she has been around,” said Coach Garris.

Coach Maile, who serves as student assistant coach, appeared in 64 games during her two years at Southern as an infielder. Her job duties include scouting, infield and directing the technology programs that Coach Garris will be implementing this season.

“Maile works like she get paid a million dollars. She is very positive and fun to be around,” said Coach Garris

With an eclectic group of players, Southern University is confident that they can put a unit together that can compete game in and game out. The first test will be February 6th versus Nicholls State in Hammond at the Southeastern Louisiana Softball Complex.

TSU Lady Tigers Snap Skid with Win Over EKU Colonels

RICHMOND, Kentucky - The Tennessee State University women’s basketball team snapped a three-game losing streak after defeating Eastern Kentucky, 68-62, Thursday night in McBrayer Arena.

TSU (9-12, 6-4 OVC) had four players to score in double-figures led by I’mani Davis and Briana Morrow who each tallied 15 points. Briana Lawrence finished the game with 11 points while Rachel Allen posted 10 points and six assists.

Shameeka Murray led EKU (8-12, 3-7 OVC) with 15 points and Michaela Hunter scored 13.

The first half was a low-scoring, back-and-forth battle for the most part. The Lady Tigers were trailing, 22-20, when the offense went cold. TSU only scored one field goal in the final five minutes of the frame and went into halftime down, 29-25.

TSU outscored EKU, 23-13, to open the second half and took the lead by the 12-minute media. The rally, fueled by defense and timely buckets, gave the Lady Tigers a 50-42 lead at the 11:21 mark. TSU held EKU without a field goal for five minutes but the Lady Colonels answered with a 6-0 spurt to pull within two.

A few possessions later, Briana Morrow scored consecutive buckets to give TSU a six-point cushion, 58-52, with 6:14 remaining.

EKU once again cut the deficit down to two points but Rachel Allen connected in the paint to put TSU on top, 66-62, with 50.6 seconds on the clock.

The Lady Colonels’ shot attempt was off the mark on the ensuing possession and they were forced to foul. With 16.0 seconds left, Rachel Allen stepped up to the line and buried two freebies to ice the game.

The Lady Tigers shot 40.9 percent from the field and outscored the Lady Colonels in the paint, 46-24. TSU also held the advantage in bench points, 12-0, and points off turnovers, 15-6.

Tennessee State returns to action on Saturday at Morehead State. Game time is slated for 5:15 p.m. ET in Johnson Arena.

DSU AD Moves to Executive Student Affairs Post; Louis B. "Skip" Perkins, Jr. hired as Interim AD

DOVER, Delaware  --  With the goal of student success in mind, Delaware State University announced today that Candy Young, the DSU athletics director since August 2012, has been asked to assume the duties of interim associate vice president for Student Affairs.

DSU President Harry L. Williams said that due to the track record of academic achievement among student-athletes under Ms. Young’s AD’s watch, the University wants to extend her leadership impact to the entire student body through Student Affairs.

During Ms. Young’s AD tenure:
  • DSU has been the top school for four consecutive years in the MEAC All-Academic Team (3.0 GPA and above), including the current school-record 136 DSU student-athletes recognized during the 2013-14 school year.
  • The retention rate for student-athletes over the last two years was 96.2%; the latest four-year graduation rate was 54% (as compared 36% for all students).
  • Enhanced opportunities for female athletes to excel competitively have been provided, as well as opportunities for growth and development of female coaches.
  • The annual Delaware Diamond Extravaganza event was established to honor individuals making significant contributions to women’s athletics and education, while also showcasing DSU female student-athletes.
“We believe that Ms. Young will strengthen Student Affairs and enhance its positive impact on the student body,” said Dr. Williams.

The new post for Ms. Young is consistent with the University’s Pride 2020 Strategic Plan and its goals for student success, including the improvement of retention and graduation rates, and the expansion and enhancement of quality programs, services and activities to enrich the student experience.

DSU also announced that it has appointed Louis B. “Skip” Perkins, Jr., as the interim associate vice president and athletics director.

Mr. Perkins comes to DSU after serving as the director of Intercollegiate Athletics at Howard University from 2010 to 2014, a post in which he oversaw 19 varsity sports programs that had more than 400 student-athletes.

Under his leadership at Howard, a new Academic Support Center was established, which resulted in an overall cumulative GPA of student-athletes that was above 3.0 over the last two school years (2012-13 and 2013-14). Mr. Perkins also oversaw the $10 million renovation of Howard’s Burr Gymnasium, as well as the installation of a synthetic turf system for Greene Stadium.

He also served as the AD of the University of Arkansas-Pine Bluff from 2007 to 2010. During his UAPB tenure, five conference titles were won by four different varsity teams – women’s cross country, men’s cross country, women’s soccer and men’s basketball.

The University will commence a search process in the near future for a permanent athletics director.

Grambling signs 24 in Fobbs' first true class

GRAMBLING, Louisiana – Broderick Fobbs will never admit it, but the Grambling football coach was hardly set up for recruiting success when he took over the program in December 2013.

Recruiting at a HBCU school is hard enough on its own, let alone with just two months to do so, and it showed when Grambling signed just 11 players.

This year, not only did Fobbs and his staff have a full year to seek out potential Tigers, they also benefitted from a rebound 7-5 year that resulted in Fobbs being selected as the SWAC Coach of the Year.

Grambling signed 24 players on Wednesday in what Fobbs called his "first true class."

"We were able to stretch ourselves a little bit and get to some areas we weren't able to get to in year 1," Fobbs said Wednesday. "This year, everyone really did a good job of hitting their areas in the state of Louisiana and also getting to the out-of-state areas and solidifying this class."

"Recruiting is the life blood of the football program. In fact, we are recruiting right now for 2016.

"Recruiting this class didn't start a couple days ago. It started last year."

The Bulldogs signed 19 student-athletes Wednesday - two quarterbacks, four offensive linemen, six defensive linemen, five defensive backs, one wide receiver and one tight end.

Xavier's next game will start at 7:30 p.m. Thursday against GCAC opponent Voorhees at the Convocation Center.

South Carolina State Signs 29 Prospects

ORANGEBURG, South Carolina  -- South Carolina State, Wednesday, announced the signing of twenty-nine (29) football prospects to national letters. Sixteen (16) of the signees are from South Carolina, seven are from North Carolina, three from Georgia, two from Florida and one from Maryland.

Among the Palmetto State prospects are four Shrine Bowl participants – WR Daquan Benjamin of Hartsville, OL Shaquille Crouch of Johnsonville, QB Marquane Goodman of Florence and a Rivals.com 2-Star pick, and DL Paul McKiever of Batesburg-Leesville. The group also includes five North-South All-Star performers – DL Wendell Bing of Columbia, LB Johnell Brown of St. Stephen, ATH Tra'Quan Dubose of Darlington, DB Kendric Gathers of Columbia, and DL Tyrell Goodman of Columbia.

Other top prospects include Shrine Bowl performer Jalen Cousar, DL of Matthews, NC; ATH Khaliq Anthony of Norway, SC; RB Bishop Ford of Huntersville, NC; DL Jamentre' Blair of Winston-Salem, NC, and WRs Kanyon Tuttle of Charlotte and Kanome McIntosh of Conyers, GA.

SC State head coach Buddy Pough, who is looking to replace 20 seniors, expressed his excitement at the latest Bulldog signing class and noted that his team addressed vital needs, including at quarterback, where the team has only one scholarship player returning at the position. The Bulldogs were also looking at help at wide receiver along both the defensive and offensive line.

"We think we have assembled a really good group of talented young men in our 2015 class," Pough said. "I applaud our coaches who did a fantastic job of pulling this class together. It was a total team effort and I think we did a nice job in addressing our needs. We are always emphasizing in-state kids and we got quite a bit of South Carolina prospects.

"It's (2015 Class) one of our largest signing classes (during my tenure) and now we just hope that they can come in a play. We went heavy on quarterbacks, landed a couple of speed guys at wide receiver and some solid linemen on both sides of the football."

Savannah State Announces 2015 Recruiting Class

SAVANNAH, Georgia  -- Savannah State University head football coach Earnest Wilson III has announced that 29 student athletes have signed letters of intent to join the Tiger football program.

In addition to six-mid-year enrollees, SSU added 23 newcomers on National Signing Day.

Of the 29 players, 23 come from high school, five from prep school and one is a transfer.

Wilson is pleased with the signings and thinks the new players can help build for the future.

"We had to address some needs of speed and size and I think we found that," says Wilson. "Our assistants, along with the help of alumni and former players, allowed us to sign some players with size and speed from the state of Florida."

Wilson also said that academics was a major selling points to recruits.

"We have had our APR issues but we are turning things around. Proof of that is that we had 25 players that finished the fall semester with at least a 3.0 grade point average."

The newcomers range from 5'7" to 6'6" and from 160-pounds to 315-pounds.

The class includes 15 defensive and 13 offensive players and one athlete representing nine different states. Eleven of the recruits are from Georgia while six are from Florida, four are from Ohio, two are from South Carolina and Alabama and one each from North Carolina, Virginia, Connecticut and California.

Of the defensive players, six are defensive backs, three are linebackers, four linemen and two ends while the offensive unit will gain five linemen, three running backs, two wide receivers, two quarterbacks, one tight end, and one athlete.

Coming from the high school ranks are offensive linemen Emmanuel Lee, Jalen Slayback, David Cooper, Jerome Maddox and Derek Simmons; running backs Vincent Buzzy, Uriah Oliver and Rowmartis Bell; linebackers Cortavius Tukes and Daniel Foster; wide receivers Justin Purdue and Miles Kelly, defensive linemen Ty'Darius Smith, Chaquez Fair, Stefen Banks and Tyavis Turner; defensive end Antonio Cintron; defensive backs William Campbell, Raheim Davis and Salvador Vazquez; quarterback Caleb Cox; tight end Nicholas Carreraand athlete Takeyvion Simmons.

Mid-year enrollees from prep schools include defensive end Corey Barrett, quarterback David Handler, linebacker Ronnie Peterson and defensive backs Raheem Coxfield and Tetris Sweat.

Defensive back Howard Newsome is a mid-year transfer from Arkansas Baptist.

The only local player to join the Tiger family was William Campbell out of Savannah's Bible Baptist High School. William will join his brother Keynanard, a rising sophomore on the SSU football team.
