JSU's receivers must bounce back after tough week

JACKSON, Mississippi -- Jackson State’s receivers have been the most consistent position group on the team this season.

That doesn’t make them immune to tough outings, though, and Saturday’s 17-12 loss against Alabama State proved that.

The elements were rough, and there were some drops and a fumble from the receiving crew as they were held to a season-low 117 yards as a group in the loss to the Hornets.

“Going into this ball game, we wanted to try to throw the football. We just had some big drops from our key players, our leaders. ...,” Tigers interim coach Derrick McCall said. “For those guys to work as hard as they work, you’re going to have these type of ball games, I know they’ll bounce back from it.”

Receivers Devin Fosselman and Daniel Williams rank first and third in the SWAC, respectively, in receiving yards. Fosselman has caught 48 passes for 780 yards this season. Williams, who has been battling some illnesses in recent weeks, has 733 yards on 46 receptions.

A look at Maryland's Division I men's basketball programs

BALTIMORE, Maryland -- There are eight Maryland Division I men's basketball teams that do not regularly play in College Park. Here's a look at how each one is expected to fare this season.

Coppin State

Coach: Michael Grant, second season

Last year: 12-20; finished seventh in Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference

Outlook: Coppin State made good on its promise to be more explosive on offense last season, leading the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference in scoring at 71.6 points per game and connecting on a program-record 294 3-pointers.

The Eagles were also one of the worst rebounding teams in the MEAC. They surrendered a league-high 42.8 rebounds per game and were outrebounded an average of 10.7 boards per game, worst in the conference.

MEAC title no longer in picture, Morgan State football still has goals in 2015

BALTIMORE, Maryland -- Saturday’s 38-14 loss at Bethune-Cookman eliminated Morgan State from contention for the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference title that the program had shared last year. But that doesn’t mean that the team has nothing left to play for in 2015.

If the Bears (3-5 overall, 3-3 in the league) can win a pair of home games against Florida A&M (1-8, 1-5) on Saturday and Norfolk State (3-6, 3-3) on Nov. 21, they will post back-to-back .500 campaigns for the first time since the program went 6-6 in 2008 and 6-5 in 2009.

Coach Lee Hull said he is not worried about player morale now that the team doesn’t have a shot at the MEAC championship.

“The guys have been up in the office Sunday and Monday,” he said Tuesday morning during his weekly conference call organized by the league. “They’re in good spirits, and we talked about us finishing strong and having a winning season. … So our team morale is high, and they understand the position we’re in and that we just need to finish strong and go into the offseason on a positive note.”

Norfolk State hopeful as men prepare to open season at South Carolina

NORFOLK, Virginia -- The personnel and the strategy might differ for Norfolk State coach Robert Jones, but the expectation never will. There’s only one outcome to the season that will do.

“It’s not going to change,” Jones said as he approached the start of his third year as head coach at the school. “I have to have a little bit more patience, I think, but it’s still the same thing: win a championship.”

The Spartans, who return just five players from a team that went 20-14 overall and 12-4 in the MEAC last season, have work to do to accomplish that.

Mainly, they have to figure out what kind of team they’re going to be.

After the departure of 6-foot-9 star forward RaShid Gaston to Xavier in the spring, Jones was left with a significant size problem. Weighing his options without time to replace Gaston’s 15.5 points and team-leading 9.6 rebounds per game, Jones decided to go with a lineup that could include as many as four guards at once, with 6-6 sophomore Jordan Butler the primary presence in the paint.

Martinsville's QB McGuire commits to NC Central

MARTINSVILLE, Virginia -- Magna Vista quarterback Shoalin McGuire has announced his intentions to play his college football at North Carolina Central University (NCCU) in Durham, N.C.

The NCCU Eagles play in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) in the Football Championship Subdivision of the NCAA. The Eagles are 6-3 on the season and 5-1 in conference play in 2015.

The 6-foot-2, 200-pound, dual-threat standout has posted a second consecutive stellar season for the Warriors, leading them back to the Region 3A West playoffs as the No. 4 seed this season after claiming the state title last year.

In his most notable game this season, McGuire posted six passing touchdowns in the first half of a win over Halifax County. McGuire has been able to find the endzone both through the air and on the ground throughout his senior season.

McGuire also was being recruited by Norfolk State and Delaware, among several others, according to rivals.com.

Howard to Meet Virginia at NCAA Tournament

BIRMINGHAM, Alabama  – Howard’s (13-7-2) first test in the 2015 NCAA Soccer Tournament will be against Virginia (16-1-2) Friday, November 13 at 5 p.m. CST. in Charlottesville, Virginia, at Klöckner Stadium.

The Bison were granted an at-large bid after defeating Alabama State 2-1 in the Southwestern Athletic Conference Championship. Anna Mitchell and Sara Vaughan each scored goals during the match, while Mackenzie Diotte was credited the win, saving six goal attempts.

This marks HOWD’s second consecutive conference title but first NCAA Tournament appearance as a SWAC affiliate member. Last season the Bison pushed past Prairie View A&M in the SWAC finals, but due to it being their first year with the Conference, the Bison were not able to attend the tournament, sending the Lady Panthers in their place.

This season, HOWD is led by Kela Gray and, tournament MVP, Dytria Ruddy. In her first season with the Bison, Gray is ranked nationally by the NCAA in total goals (17) and holds top positions for the Conference in shots (75), points (41), goals and game-winning goals (4).

Both student-athletes helped Howard become the 3rd highest scoring team in the nation – the second highest being its NCAA Tournament opponent, Virginia.

The Cavaliers enter the matchup as the 2014 NCAA Tournament Runner Up.

Makenzy Doniak is the student-athlete to watch on the Virginia squad, managing 10 goals and 10 assists on the season. Doniak also aided in the Cavaliers’ nationally ranked seats for the NCAA in won-lost-tied percentage (1st at .895), assists per game (2nd at 2.89), points per game (2nd at 9.42), scoring offense (2ndat 3.26) and total assists (2nd with 55).

Mizzou black players change college athletics forever

COLUMBIA, Missouri -- Call out the instigator, because there’s something in the air

We’ve got to together sooner or later, because the revolution’s here

And you know it’s right

Released in May 1969, Thunder Clap Newman’s “Something in the Air” hit the charts nine months after UCLA basketball star Lew Alcindor and other prominent college athletes chose not to participate in the 1968 Summer Olympics in Mexico City.

Tommie Williams and John Carlos won gold and bronze medals, respectively, in the 200 meters then donned black gloves and raised the “Black Power” fist on the medal stand as the Star Spangled Banner played. The players who skipped the Games were ripped by the predominantly white sports media. Williams and Carlos were stripped of their medals and ordered out of the Olympic Village.

There indeed was something in the air in October 1968.

Forty-seven years later, about 30 black football players at the University of Missouri told this nation and those that run collegiate athletics that “the revolution’s here.”

On Saturday, November 7, these gallant, young black heroes informed their coaches and the world that they would not practice or play until Timothy Wolfe, the university system president, resigned or was removed from office and graduate student Jonathan Butler ended his 10-day hunger strike.

JSU's Ivy to sit out rest of the season

JACKSON, Mississippi -- Jackson State quarterback LaMontiez Ivy suffered an ankle injury against Alabama A&M on Oct. 17. He sat out the Tigers' next game against Arkansas-Pine Bluff and played in parts of the following two contests against Mississippi Valley State and Alabama State, but wasn't quite himself.

After he was sacked late in the first half against the Hornets on Saturday, it appeared Ivy re-aggravated that ankle injury, which led JSU interim coach Derrick McCall to make the decision to sit Ivy for the remainder of the season.

"Right now, in my mindset, I just told him that we'll just go ahead and rest you for the rest of the season and try to let that ankle heal and let that ankle get well. We'll rely on Jarin (Morikawa) and Jordan (Williams) to take us through the rest of the season," McCall said at his weekly press conference on Monday. "He (Ivy) won't be playing anymore this year."

After the game, McCall said Ivy had been battling a high-ankle sprain.

Grambling one win away from clinching SWAC West title

GRAMBLING, Louisiana — Grambling's motto under coach Broderick Fobbs is to worry about the present day. Nothing in the past matters and everything in the future is irrelevant.

Well, the future is here now. Grambling can wrap up the Southwestern Athletic Conference West Division championship this weekend with a road win over Arkansas-Pine Bluff.

The prize is in sight, but still, Grambling is downplaying the magnitude of a potential division-clinching win.

"To be honest with you, we're not even thinking about it. The message is win this game. The message is Pine Bluff. The message is the hurdle in front of us right now," Grambling offensive line coach Reggie Nelson said Monday. "You win and you win then you win then you know what the possibility and the outcome is going to be."

At 7-0 in league play, Grambling holds a ...

NC Central aims to return to NCAA tournament

DURHAM, North Carolina -- Long gone are the days when N.C. Central coach LeVelle Moton could call a timeout and tell Jeremy Ingram to go get a bucket and more often that not Ingram would.

No longer can he tell Emanuel “Poobie” Chapman to create an open shot for another player. He too often did that.

And Moton is quick to say he may never get that again at N.C. Central.

“That kid was rare,” Moton said of Ingram. “Y’all saw him when the lights were on, but it was even more special to see him in here when no one was in the stands.”

Those players, who in 2014 led N.C. Central to its first Division I NCAA tournament berth in school history, have since graduated. This will be the second season without them, and the Eagles are trying to figure out a way to get back to the postseason.

Only two players on this year’s team – Dante Holmes and Jay Copeland – and Moton remember what it was like.

S.C. State men moving in right direction

ORANGEBURG, South Carolina -- A preseason ranking of eighth may not sound like much, but it’s the highest the South Carolina State men’s basketball program has been picked in four years. Coach Murray Garvin hopes that is an indication the program is moving in the right direction.

“Eighth in our league is not where we desire to be. I would like to think we can finish better than that,” said Garvin, in his third season with the Bulldogs.

S.C. State was seventh in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference in 2014-15 after being forced to play “small ball” according to Garvin. Two of the team’s post players, 6-9 senior Luka Radovic and 6-10 junior DouDou Geye, both missed last year with injuries.

The return of Radovic and Geye combined with four returning starters and a roster of eight players who have logged significant minutes has Garvin thinking S.C. State “can finish much better than eighth place.”

Sara Vaughan scored first in the second half, adding another header to the championship game’s resume. This goal gave HOWD another one score advantage over the Lady Hornets, ultimately giving the Bison the game.

KSU Thorobreds close out season with 34-7 win over Stillman

FRANKFORT, Kentucky – The Kentucky State football team finished its season on a high note and celebrated the final game for its seniors by pulling away for a 34-7 win over Stillman College in a Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game on Saturday at Alumni Stadium.

The Thorobreds posted their highest scoring total of the season, helped by Reginal Harris, who topped the 100-yard mark and set a career high rushing total for the third straight week. Harris finished with 174 yards on 28 carries, including a 57-yard touchdown down the right sideline that helped put the game away in the fourth quarter.

The defense was in dominant form as well, forcing five turnovers and holding Stillman to just 119 yards of total offense. Aside from Stillman's one touchdown, a 43-yard pass from Alex Frederick to Hudson Cain, Kentucky State held the Tigers to just 1.4 yards per play.

Kentucky State was first to get on the scoreboard, set up by a Vincent Edwards interception and return to the Stillman 27-yard-line. A 23-yard run by Harris put the Thorobreds inside the 10, and Derek Woodmore ran the ball in from a yard out for the touchdown. On its next possession, Kentucky State drove 61 yards on 10 plays, with a Bill Rose field goal making the score 10-0 at the end of the first quarter.

Stillman got its touchdown in the second quarter to cut the margin to 10-7, but a Charles Johnson kick return across midfield to the Stillman 45 set up Kentucky State for another score. Six plays later, Charles Johnson was in the end zone on a 13-yard pass from Ora Johnson for a 17-7 lead.

The Thorobreds tacked on another Rose field goal to make the lead 20-7 early in the third quarter, and late in the quarter, the defense came up with its biggest stop of the game. Aided by a Lydell Simon interception and fumble back to Stillman as well as a pass interference penalty, the Tigers ran 12 plays inside the Kentucky State 10-yard-line, eventually coming up empty with a turnover on downs.

Kentucky State pulled away from that point, going up 27-7 on the touchdown run by Harris, followed by Ryan Luckett returning an interception 59 yards for a touchdown on the next series.

Brentton Ervin led the Kentucky State defense statistically with 11 total tackles, 5.5 tackles for loss, a sack, and a pass break-up. Trevon Spencer and Lydell Simon finished with six and five tackles respectively, each recording a tackle for loss and an interception.

Additionally, Kentucky State recognized the 12 members of this year's senior class who were on hand for their final game. The class includes Jermaine Graham, Nate Robinson, Kolby Griffin, Vaughn Caine, Terrell Johnson, Eric Rawls, Kyle Jackson, Simon, Andre McCall, Nate Allen, Woodmore, and D'Shaunte Glass.

With the victory, Kentucky State breaks a four game losing streak and a five game losing streak in the series with Stillman. The Thorobreds wrap up the season at 3-7 with a 2-3 record in the SIAC West Division, while Stillman finishes 3-6 overall with a 1-4 record in the SIAC West.

CSU Marauders swat Hornets in 50-31 victory on Senior Day

WILBERFORCE, Ohio – Saturday's game featuring the Central State Marauders and Concordia (AL) Hornets had a bit of everything including big plays, over 2,000 prospective high school students in attendance, senior recognition ceremonies, a Marauder victory and a marriage proposal.

he events started a half hour prior to kick off as 17 senior football players were recognized. Gervell Morgan, a senior linebacker from Chattanooga, TN, concluded the pregame ceremony with a successful marriage proposal to his new fiancée Jasmine Dotson.

"It was an amazing feeling to share our moment with all our friends and family," Morgan said. "It truly was an incredible day and an even better feeling when she said yes."

With a happy 265 senior linebacker and excited group of players, CSU opened the game by claiming an early 14-0 lead. Clim Robbins delivered his first of two big plays on the day when he picked off his sixth pass of the season and ran it back 60 yards for the game's first score at the 12:04 mark of the 1st quarter. On CSU's next possession, two seniors connected as quarterback Julian Walker hit tight end Zach Thomas for a 38 yard pass down to the Hornets' 5 yard line. Running back Jihad Rasheed scored his first rushing touchdown of the season on the next play to put the Marauders up 14 with 9:30 left in the 1st quarter.

"With the seniors playing in their last game and Gervell popping the big question, we knew our guys would be fired up," CSU Head Coach Cedric Pearl said. "I thought our guys did a great job of getting in the right mindset heading into the game and we were able to get off to a hot start."

Despite falling behind by double digits early, the Hornets responded with a 5 play – 74 yard touchdown drive to pull back within 7 at the end of the opening quarter. A bad snap in their own end zone gave CSU a safety and a 16-7 lead at the 10:51 mark of the second quarter. On the pursuing free kick, Robbins struck again with a 70 yard touchdown return to put his team up 23-7.
"Clim had an incredible day and an All-American caliber season," Pearl said. "He continues to impress with his playmaking ability and is capable of doing it on defense, offense and special teams."

The Hornets remained as pesky as the school's nickname, capitalizing off a fumble and a short field to pick up 10 points in the final 7 minutes of the first half to pull within 6 at halftime.

Another Marauder turnover handed Concordia (AL) the ball at the CSU 35 yard line to begin the second half. The Hornets took advantage and the lead as quarterback James Crosby scrambled for the score to put his team up 24-23 with 11:08 left in the 3rd quarter.

Delivering big hits all afternoon, the CSU defense administered a blow to running back Dequan Martin to jar the ball out on the next Concordia possession. The newly engaged Morgan scooped up the loose ball and took it down to the Hornets' 10 yard line before Rasheed picked up his second score of the day to put CSU back up 30-24 at the 9:24 mark of the 3rd quarter.

"We had a few lapses but our defense picked it up in the second half and we were able to effectively move the ball on offense," Pearl said. "Concordia came ready to play and we had to refocus in order to pull ahead."

Late in the 3rd quarter, senior punt returner Jordan Howard showed his veteran knowledge picking up what Concordia (AL) had thought to be a downed punt. With Concordia (AL) players assuming the play was over, Howard picked up the ball and ran it back 50 yards for the score to put his team up 37-24 heading into the 4th quarter.

"I give Jordan credit for paying attention to the play and knowing the rules of the game," Pearl said. "It was another big play and really helped to solidify our lead."

CSU began to pour it on in the final quarter as Walker completed on a 49 yard strike to receiver Ronnie Fountain Jr to set up a 7 yard touchdown run from Deandre Grant to claim a 43-24 lead with 12:48 remaining. CSU surrendered a 65 yard touchdown reception to Markeis Levatte on the next possession to make the score 43-31. With 8:03 remaining, Rasheed responded for CSU with the longest run of the season on a 50 yard touchdown for his third score of the afternoon to put his team up 19. Nehemiah Coward picked off a Hornet pass on the next possession and CSU successfully ran out the clock to claim the 50-31 victory.

CSU totaled 264 yards on the ground with an average of 5.3 yards per carry. Defensively, CSU forced 4 turnovers and record 6 sacks.

Rasheed finished the day with a season high 121 yards to go along with his three scores. Making his first start at quarterback in the final game of his collegiate career, Walker was an effective 7 for 15 for 175 yards through the air with no interceptions. He also picked up 20 yards on the ground.

"We emphasized ball security this week and we did a good job of that to finish the game," Pearl said. "I commend Julian for working hard and going out there and executing."

On defense, CSU had a host of outstanding performances including Morgan's 10.5 tackles. 2 sacks and fumble recovery. Deonate Gary eclipsed 100 tackles on the year with a game high 15 on the afternoon. Justin Woods-West finished with 2 sacks to go with 11 tackles and 2 forced fumbles. Woods-West looks to finish atop the SIAC with 13.5 sacks on the year.

"Today is a great win for our seniors and we had a lot of guys who put together tremendous individual performances this year" Pearl said. "With today's win, we also show that our program is headed in the right direction. I think our fans and alumni have a lot to look forward to going into next season. The returning players and coaches continue to be dedicated to finding ways to improve as a team each and every day heading into next year."

The 50 point performance is the most CSU has scored since the 2012 season. Finishing the year at 5-5 overall, the Marauders tie for the best overall record since 1995.

NOTES:

Morehouse Maroon Tigers Slay Lane Dragons in Season Finale

ATLANTA – Nikolys Baker bulled his way to two fourth quarter touchdown, helping Morehouse to a, 28-24, come-from-behind win over the Lane College Dragons.

Baker was honored before the game along with 18 others seniors in their final home games. On the 10-play game-winning drive that consumed 59 yards, Baker rushed for 42 yards on seven carries. On most of those tackles the fullback from Riverside, CA, broke multiple tackles. On the 9-yard touchdown, he broke two tackles and leaped over another would-be tackler for the final score.

Going out with a bang, "Niko" finished with a game-high 88 on 20 carries, in his best effort since transferring last season.

Baker's first touchdown, a one-yard plunge, was set up by a 73-yard kickoff return by Amyr Smith. The return to the Morehouse one-yard line followed a 55-yard interception of aMonqavious Johnson pass by Lane's Dwayne Brown that gave the Dragons a 24-10 lead with 12 remaining.

Brown's touchdown was part of 21 unanswered points by the Dragons who scored on a one-yard run and a fumble recovery in the end zone of a Johnson fumble.
Morehouse evened the season record to 5-5; 2-2; while Lane fell to 3-7; 1-4.

Smith, a freshman who leads the SIAC in return yards and has returned two kickoffs for touchdowns this season, barely missed another touchdown but was tackled on the one-yard line. He returned three kickoffs for 156 yards, a punt for nine yards and finished with a game-high 171 all-purpose yards.

Quarterback Johnson limped his way through most of the game on a bad ankle, refusing to leave the game, despite several attempts by the Morehouse coaching staff to coax him to the bench. Despite two interceptions and a fumble in the end zone, Johnson orchestrated impressive scoring drives that included 5 of 9 third down conversions and 3 of 3 scores on trips into the Red Zone.

The junior from Atlanta connected on a 25-yard scoring strike to Lance McGuffie, which gave the Maroon Tigers a 7-0 lead, and he ran for a 15-yard touchdown in the second quarter, which pushed the Morehouse lead to 14-3.

In the largely defensive battle that went down to the wire, the Maroon Tigers had an interception, forced and recovered a fumble and held the Dragons to 173 total yards.

Linebacker James Woods had a monster game, leading the Morehouse defense, which posted nine tackles for loss and two sacks. Woods, a sophomore from Lithonia, GA, collected 12 tackles, three tackles for loss, a sack and a fumble recovery.

Kimlyn Teague recorded seven tackles, with two tackles for loss, and senior Christopher Hambie had six tackles.

Morehouse finishes the season in third place in the SIAC East Division, behind Albany State and Fort Valley State.

SAU Falcons Spoil Shaw's Homecoming Day For Season's First Football Win

DURHAM, North Carolina – Saint Augustine's University picked the perfect time to play its best game of the season.

An inspired effort by the Falcons led to a 31-24 CIAA Southern Division football victory over crosstown rival Shaw University at Durham County Memorial Stadium on Saturday, Nov. 7, 2015. The victory was sweet for the Falcons, who ruined the Bears' Homecoming Day for their first win of the season. The Falcons have now beaten the Bears two consecutive seasons and three of the last four years.

"Last week, we lost to Johnson C. Smith in our Homecoming game," said Falcons' Interim Head Coach Tim Chavous, who gained his first-ever coaching win. "So I told the team that this would be our Homecoming. We went out and had fun today."

The Falcons (1-9 overall, 1-6 CIAA) were victorious in the season finale on a day when tailback Roderick Davenport II (Sr./Orangeburg, SC) became the University's career rushing leader in the modern era. He gained 78 yards and scored one touchdown to finish his stellar four-year career with 2,809 yards. The previous record was 2,747 yards set by former Falcons' star Walter Sanders from 2007 to 2010.

"It feels great to break the record in a win over Shaw," Davenport said. "If I had broken the record at home against Johnson C. Smith last week, it wouldn't have felt the same because we lost."

Davenport was one of several heroes on Saturday. Cornerback Darius Cole (Fr./Pittsboro, NC) recorded two of the Falcons' four interceptions and ran one back for a score. Quarterback D.J. Johnson (Fr./Richmond, VA) was steady as he completed 13 of 20 pass attempts for 155 yards, a touchdown and zero interceptions.

Wide receiver Jordan Turkvant (Sr./Orangeburg, SC) caught a touchdown pass from Johnson, and safety Denzel Watkins (Sr./Troutman, NC) scored on an interception return, the first of his career. Linebacker Durell Newby (Jr./Graham, NC) and defensive tackle Chasz Cosby (So./Charlotte, NC) both led an aggressive defense which harassed Shaw quarterback Terrence Shambry II and bottled up standout back Marquise Grizzle. Newby collected a team-high eight tackles and Cosby added seven tackles including one tackle for loss. Defensive back Tyquan Bryant (Fr./Henderson, NC) intercepted a pass, and the special teams play of Sean Smith (Fr./Valdosta, GA) was a factor.

"We were getting better each week, and it all came together today," Watkins said. "We were fired up to play Shaw."

Cole set the tone on the game's third play when he picked off a Shambry pass and ran untouched 31 yards into the end zone. Smith booted the extra point for a 7-0 Falcons' lead with less than two minutes elapsed on the clock.

The Bears (1-9 overall, 1-6 CIAA) pulled within 7-3 on Joe Nguyen's 35-yard field goal, but Smith responded with a 34-yard field goal for the Falcons in the first quarter. The Falcons stretched the lead to 17-3 when Davenport scored on a one-yard run and Smith booted the extra point with 39 seconds left before halftime. The key play in the drive was a 22-yard pass from Smith to Cole on fourth down. This was the second time in three weeks that Smith completed a pass on a fake punt to extend a drive.

The Bears sliced the lead to 17-10 in the third quarter on Grizzle's four-yard run, but the Falcons deflated the home team with two fourth-quarter touchdowns. The first score was a 10-yard lob pass from Johnson to Turkvant, who leaped high to catch the ball in the end zone corner despite being draped by a Bears' defender. Smith's extra point pushed the score to 24-10 in favor of the Falcons.

The Falcons padded their lead when Watkins intercepted a pass and scooted 40 yards into the end zone. His touchdown and Smith's extra point gave the Falcons an insurmountable 31-10 lead with 8:35 left in the game.

Grizzle scored two late touchdowns to cut the Falcons' lead to 31-24, but Davenport fell on an onside kick with 41 seconds left to clinch the victory. It was fitting that Davenport, who set the school's career rushing mark in the game, would stop the Bears' last-ditch attempt at a comeback.

After beating the Bears, the Falcons felt a sense of relief. There were plenty of smiles and laughter during the celebration.

"This is a good feeling," Davenport said. "It feels like we went 10-0."

DWIGHT FLOYD COMMENTARY: FAMU BOT is Example of What Needs to Change

TALLAHASSEE, Florida -- Recently the Tallahassee Democrat stated that between FAMU President Dr. Elmira Mangum and members of the FAMU Board of Trustees who have formed an adversarial position and are entrenched, one or both parties need to be dismissed. Members of the Board of Governors has used the situation to do nothing more than add fuel to the fire.

Meanwhile, the FAMU community is just tired of it. The most recent charade by the BOT and all of these responses are examples of what has over the years been an apparent failure of the FAMU administration and evidence of what needs to change.

FAMU does not need the Governor’s office or the Board of Governors to set things straight; and certainly not the Tallahassee Democrat. These parties have already demonstrated a lack of understanding of the needs of this University and the community it serves. Notwithstanding the people in these positions, neither the Governor’s office nor the Board of Governors has ever been a strong advocate of the role of Florida A&M University.

The Tallahassee Democrat has an obligation to increase readership and their articles read more like the comment pages on social media than investigative news. Thus, they make a mockery of the situation.
