Lincoln Lions Football Team gives Fans and Alumni a Homecoming Game to Remember with Win over Vikings

d'ricoLINCOLN UNIVERSITY, Pennsylvania  --  The Lincoln University football team gave their fans a Homecoming game to remember as they earned their first win of the season, defeating Elizabeth City State University 21-20 at Lions Stadium.

With the win the Lions improve to 1-6 and 1-3 in Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) games. The win was also Lincoln's first ever win over the Vikings. Elizabeth City State falls to 1-4 overall and 0-3 in league play. The win also snapped the Lions 24-game losing streak which dated back to September of 2016 when they beat Lincoln (Mo.) 33-23.

"The key to the game today was our execution," said Head coach Josh Dean. This is just the best game we executed both on offense and defense. We were able to get off the field on third downs and we were able to advance the ball and score."

And score early…Lincoln's Kendall Brooks (Washington, DC /Bell ) put the Lions on the board early, recovering a blocked field goal attempt and running it back 84 yards for the touchdown. Cole Klubek (Biloxi, Miss.) added the extra point for a 7-0 Lions lead.

They were driving the ball on us defensively and the fact that we got that block was huge," adds Dean. I thought it and the touchdown changed the momentum and I think that when we came back out offensively we had a certain freeness among our players that we could go out and play and execute well."

Quarterback Vincent Espinoza (Madera, Calif /Madera (West Hills)) used another big play to cap off a 97-yard drive as the first quarter came to a close, connecting with Carlos Croslin (Baltimore, Md. /Frederick Douglass (Globe Tech) ) for a 46-yard touchdown pass with Klubek then adding the extra point for a 14-0 lead heading into the second quarter.

Espinoza added a 49-yard touchdown pass to Reginald Mays Jr to push the Lions lead to 21-0 with 2:09 left in the half.

"He (Espinoza) played well today," said Dean. "He did a great job managing the game. He knows ball security and he made a lot of huge plays for us, especially early to get us going and keep the chains moving."

The Vikings quickly followed with an 80-yard kickoff return to get on the board before the end of the half and the Lions led 21-7 at the break.

Espinosa led the Lions offensive attack with both his arm and his legs, throwing for 122 yards and a pair of TDs on 6 of 11 passing, while also topping Lincoln's list of rushers with 59 yards Lavelle Cloyd (Lexington, Ky./Bryan Station (Kentucky State)) chipped in with another 42 yards on 12 carries.

BOX SCORE

On the defensive end, Lincoln's defense was absolutely stellar in the second half, despite giving up 13 points on two big plays in the fourth quarter. The special teams came up big after the Vikings scored their third touchdown as they forced ECSU kicker Jason Monastra to ick wide on the extra point attempt that would have tied the game with 5:35 remaining.

Solomon Bassett (Fort Worth, Texas/Boswell) and D'rico Cook (Waldorf, Md. /St. Charles) each had two sacks in the second half, none bigger than Cook's late in the fourth quarter with just under two minutes remaining and the Vikings driving and facing a third and four. Cook broke through the ECSU offensive line and brought down Viking quarterback Kedri Patterson for a 14-yard loss, forcing the Vikings to punt.

The Lions were then able to run out the clock to earn the win.

Bassett finished the game with five tackles and two sacks. Three of the five tackles resulted in lost yardage for the Vikings. "I think what goes unnoticed is the play of Solomon Bassett (Fort Worth, Texas/Boswell)," said Dean. "He's a guy that can play and start and be a star for any team in this conference. You put his stats against any other defensive lineman in this conference and he's second to none. He keeps consistently playing, regardless of the situation, regardless of the score, regardless of anything and our guys feed off his energy."

"D'rico Cook, he comes from the same cloth, adds Dean. "He's a freshman but he came with the mindset of wanting to make an impact." Cook indeed made an impact in the game, leading the team with six tackles while also recording two sacks and two tackles for loss.

Vincent Woodard (Accokeek, Md. /Gwynn Park) also added two sacks, giving the Lions six for the game, their highest total since Lincoln recorded seven in its win over Chowan 31-15 in 2011 (that game was also the Lions last homecoming day win.). It is also the first time in the history of the program that three different players recorded at least two sacks in a game.

"This feels amazing," said Espinosa after the win. "It's been a long time just to get a win, and to have it come on my last homecoming is really special. This is great for all us seniors, because we'll never have another chance to win on homecoming."

"I think it's huge for the seniors having the opportunity to win your last homecoming game.," adds Dean. "Right now we're playing for positive memories and positive things to send the seniors out on."

Alcorn’s Explosive Second Half Downs AAMU 35-26

HUNTSVILLE, Alabama – Tied 10-10 at halftime, the Alcorn State University football program put up 25 points in the second half to outscore Alabama A&M 35-26 on Saturday to spoil Homecoming for the Bulldogs at Louis Crews Stadium.

The biggest play of the game though came in the first half for the Braves (5-2, 3-1 SWAC) when junior quarterback Noah Johnson ran for the longest touchdown in school history on a 92-yarder. It put Alcorn up 10-3 at the time.

The Braves tallied three touchdowns, a field goal and a safety in the second half. Touchdowns were scored by junior De'Shawn Waller on a pair of one-yard rushes and senior Dayall Harris on a 29-yard reception. The safety came after a blocked punt by junior Theron Bonds was recovered by AAMU in its own end zone.

Overall, Johnson led the offense with 160 passing yards, 154 rushing yards and two total touchdowns. Waller, the back-to-back SWAC Newcomer of the Week honoree, stayed hot with 133 yards rushing and two touchdowns.

Defensively, sophomore Qwynnterrio Cole led the Braves for the second straight week with nine tackles. He leads the team with 32 tackles on the season. Alcorn recorded a whopping eight sacks in the contest including a career-high 2.5 by senior Sterling Shippy.

The Braves outgained the Bulldogs (3-4, 2-2 SWAC) 501-305 in total yards and 341-52 in rushing. AAMU's Aqeel Glass ended 20-for-35 with 203 yards and two touchdowns in the air.

Junior Corey McCullough drained both of his field goal attempts including a 34 and 39-yarder. He also punted eight times for 268 yards.

AAMU had the ball first. On the first play of the game, the Braves swarmed Glass on a cornerback blitz and forced a fumble which was recovered by Alcorn. It resulted in a 34-yard field goal by McCullough which gave Alcorn an early 3-0 lead.

BOX SCORE

The Bulldogs started moving the ball after a 42-yard run by Trevon Walters. They got to the Alcorn 14-yard line, but a tackle for a loss by junior Terry Whittington and a sack by junior Kwanzi Jackson pushed them back to the 27-yard line. AAMU kicker Spencer Corey tied the game 3-3 with a 44-yard field goal at the four-minute mark.

AAMU was on the move in the second quarter after a 16-yard rush by Gary Quarles and a 15-yard face mask on the Braves. The Bulldogs got to the Alcorn 26 when they decided to go for it on 4th and 12 instead of kicking a 43-yard field goal into the wind; AAMU completed a nine-yard pass to Marceles Clash but it was stopped short of the first down.

On the ensuing possession, the Braves were backed up after a penalty and were situated with a 3rd-and-19 when Johnson took off for the longest TD run in school history, a 92-yarder. It came after strong blocking by his wide receivers down the field and put Alcorn ahead 10-3 with 6:22 left in the half.

The Bulldogs evened it 10-10 late in the half. The scoring play was a one-yard pass to Kendric Johnson. A pair of big penalties on Alcorn kept the drive alive for AAMU including a 15-yard face mask on third down and an unsportsmanlike conduct.

Midway through the third quarter, Alcorn was faced with a 3rd-and-8 when Johnson went deep and connected with junior Raidarious Anderson for a huge 52-yard gain. A 13-yard carry by Waller put the ball at the one-yard line, and Waller finished it off with a one-yard touchdown run to put the Braves back up 17-10 at the 7:21 mark.

On the following kick return, a big hit by freshman Keyron Kinsler, bundled with a penalty on AAMU backed the Bulldogs up to their own five-yard line to start the drive. After a three-and-out, AAMU's punt was blocked by Bonds and recovered in the end zone by the Bulldogs for a safety. It increased Alcorn's lead to 19-10 with 6:24 remaining in the third.

After the safety, a couple hard runs of 10 and 11 yards, respectively, by Waller got the Braves to the AAMU 43. Alcorn then decided to go for it on 4th and 4 from the AAMU 27 when Johnson found senior Jaquaveon Boles for the first down. The Braves upped their advantage to 26-10 on a 29-yard touchdown reception by Harris with 3:06 to go in the third.

Late in the quarter, AAMU moved into the red zone after a 54-yard reception by Nathaniel Dell. The Bulldogs quickly scored on a 19-yard screen pass to Brian Jenkins Jr. to cut into the deficit. AAMU decided to go for two and converted on a pass to Dell to make it a 26-18 game with 1:56 left in the third.

The Braves responded with a quick drive of their own. It started with an 18-yard run by Waller to the 50, and then catches by Harris and freshman Juan Anthony put the ball on the AAMU 30. Johnson nearly scored on the following play with a 29-yard run, but Waller finished it off with a one-yard plow into the end zone. The extra point hit the right post, but Alcorn led 32-18 heading into the fourth quarter.

De'Shawn Waller

Alcorn was on the move again early in the fourth. A couple of runs by Johnson put the Braves into AAMU territory, and a roughing the punter call kept the drive alive at the AAMU 29. Alcorn made it a three possession game, 35-18, after McCullough nailed a 39-yard field goal with 7:56 remaining.

AAMU scored on its final possession of the game. With 30 seconds left, Dylan Smith came in at quarterback and completed a 37-yard touchdown pass to Terrell Gardner. The Bulldogs converted the two-point conversion on another pass to Gardner which made it 35-26.

AAMU attempted on onside kick at the very end, but it was recovered by junior Solomon Muhammad.

The Braves will return home next weekend when they host Grambling State at 2 p.m. in a Purple Out at Jack Spinks-Marino Casem Stadium.

NOTES
- Johnson's 92-yard touchdown run broke the previous school record of 88 yards set last season by De'Lance Turner against Miles College. His 154 rushing yards today were a career-high, breaking his previous best of 139 against Mississippi Valley State earlier this season.

- The Braves defeated AAMU for the fifth consecutive year. Alcorn is now 14-2 against SWAC East Division opponents over the last four seasons.

- Alcorn entered the game ranked No. 2 in the nation in total defense, giving up 242.0 yards per game. The Braves were slightly below average, surrendering 305 yards to the Bulldogs. However, Alcorn was also top-10 in the country in defensive third down conversion percentage (.278) and limited AAMU to a 1-for-11 (.091) mark.

- Alcorn's eight sacks were a season-high and eight different student-athletes recorded at least a half a sack.

- Cole matched a career-high in tackles with nine which he also did last week.

- The Braves entered the game leading the SWAC in both scoring (34.3 ppg) and rushing (285.8). They scored 35 points and rushed for 341 yards in the match.

- Alcorn went on the road to spoil a Homecoming for the second straight time after defeating Southern 20-3 previously.

- The Braves are ranked No. 4 in this week's HBCU Poll.

- Alcorn's captains were Boles, Shippy and senior Charles Hughes. The Braves won the coin toss and deferred to the second half.

Quoting Alcorn head coach Fred McNair
On being able to get the win today
"It was a tough one today. It means a lot for us to be able to come into a hostile environment like this and pull out a win. Our guys work their butts off every day in practice and they deserved this. They did what they had to do to come out with this victory."

On not being able to score with good field position in the first half
"That's what's so disappointing, when we're in the red zone that many times but couldn't come out with points. We kept hurting ourselves with penalties and negative plays, and we just have to be bigger than that. We came out slow and we've shown that we can play better than that. We've got to find a way as coaches to get these guys up and playing fast out of the gates."

On the offense in the second half
"We knew we couldn't play any worse offensively than we did in the first half. We obviously did a much better job in the second half. I told them at halftime just to relax and go out there and have fun. We needed to just get back to playing football the way we know how to."

On the defense
"We know the defense is going to play well every week. We just have to be more consistent offensively, especially in the red zone. We have to be able to execute and score points in the red zone. We'll have a big test next week with Grambling coming to town and it's going to be a tough fight. They always have a good ball club and we have to show up ready to play. I'm still looking for a full, complete-game out of our guys."

Quoting senior quarterback Noah Johnson
On how he felt out there today
"I felt great. I had to go back to the drawing board after last week. I had two options, and that was either be soft or come back and work hard. I stayed after practice all week with my receivers, and I wasn't going to let last week determine who I really am and how I can play."

On whether it was his ground game today that got him going
"Sometimes it's the ground game, but sometimes I get it going through the air. It was a slow start for us today, but I know it's just a matter of time before this offense puts it all together. I know it's coming."

On what the key is for this offense to be successful
"It all comes down to execution. If we come out and execute then we'll put up big numbers. We know we've got a great defense and football is a team sport for a reason."

Florida A&M Rattlers Rally Past North Carolina A&T Aggies In Road Thriller, 22-21

GREENSBORO, North Carolina – Yahia Aly’s 26-yard field goal with four seconds left lifted the resurgent Florida A&M University Rattlers, to a thrilling 22-21 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference victory over the the defending Black College and MEAC champion North Carolina A&T Aggies, at Aggie Stadium here Saturday afternoon.

Saturday’s game was a classic with the up and rising Rattlers taking the champ’s best shots and dishing out enough of their own in a close quarters fight to score the late-round knockout before a national television audience.

After the Rattlers had climbed to within two points, 21-19 on Ryan Stanley’s 11-yard scoring strike to Chad Hunter with just over five minutes left (the two point conversion failed), the FAMU Defense imposed their will on the ensuing Aggie drive, stopping the home team short on third down, forcing A&T to punt the ball away with just over two minutes left.

Starting their final drive from their own 21-yard line, FAMU mixed in runs from Ricky Henrilus and Azende Rey, along with clutch passes from Stanley, to move within field goal range, running the clock down to four seconds before taking a timeout.

Aly, who had missed an earlier PAT on the Rattlers’ first touchdown in the second quarter, nailed this 26-yard kick right down Wahnish Way set off a celebration on the Rattler sidelines, and likely, all over Rattler Nation.

Saturday’s game, billed by many in the NCAA FCS and Black College media realm as the FCS Game of the Week, turned into the anticipated close quarters fight to the finish.

The challengers from FAMU (5-2, 4-0 MEAC) won their fourth straight game, and tightened their grip on the proverbial catbird’s seat atop the conference, standing now as the lone undefeated team in league play.

Meanwhile, the vanquished Aggies (5-2, 2-1), who came in ranked No. 10 in the STATS, Inc. FCS Top 25 Polls, dropped their second last second heartbreaker at home this season, having fallen to visiting Morgan State, 16-13 here in September on a field goal as time expired.

The Aggies drew first blood however  in the opening stanza, taking a 14-0 lead into the second quarter.

Speedster Malik Wilson returned the game’s opening kickoff 100 yards for a score to give the Aggies a 7-0 lead.

Senior QB Lamar Raynard then extended the Aggies’ lead to 14-0, on a 38-scoring toss to Zach Leslie, with 1:18 left in the quarter.

FAMU got on the board with a defensive score late in the second period, when freshman defensive back Herman Jackson forced a fumble while tackling Aggie RB Marquell Cartwright, then scooped up the loose pigskin, racing 55 yards for a touchdown. Yahia Aly’s PAT try failed, leaving the score, 14-6 with 4:45 left in the half.

The Aggies answered the FAMU defensive tally with a scoring drive of their own, capped by a six-yard TD toss from Raynard to Leslie for a 21-6 count with 1:37 left in the half.

FAMU drew closer to the Aggies in the third period, when Azende Rey capped a Rattler drive with a five-yard TD burst. Aly’s PAT kick was good, cutting the Aggie lead to 21-13 with just over 11 minutes left in the stanza.

The score remained that way deep into the fourth quarter, when the Rattlers mounted a 12-play, 66-yard drive capped by Ryan Stanley’s 11-yard scoring toss to Chad Hunter, slicing the Aggie lead to 21-19 with 5:09 left. The two-point conversion try failed.

FAMU’s Defense came up big on the ensuing Aggie drive, forcing A&T to punt the ball away with just over two minutes left, setting the stage for the dramatic knockout of the champs on their home field.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS: LB Derrick Mayweather and DE Antonio Miller each had seven tackles to lead the Rattler Defense, with Miller picking off an Aggie pass to boot… RBs Ricky Henrilus (33 yards, eight carries) and Deshawn Smith (22 yards on eight carries) led the FAMU ground game, which netted 57 yards on 27 carries…. QB Ryan Stanley posted his second-ever 300-yard passing game collegiately on Saturday, throwing for 313 yards on career highs in completions (28) and attempts (53)…. Chad Hunter finished as the Rattlers’ top receiver with eight catches for 105 yards and one TD, while RB Azende Rey had eight catches as well for 63 yards.

SNAKEBITES: The Aggies were the highest ranked foe beaten by a FAMU team (No. 10 in FCS) since 1999, when the Rattlers took down another North Carolina team on the road, No. 4 Appalachian State, 44-19 in the opening round of the FCS playoffs…. Their 4-0 start in MEAC play is their best start since 2001, when they won their first four games before losing to North Carolina A&T, 55-23 in Greensboro on this date, October 13, 2001…. FAMU can clinch their first winning season since 2011 (7-4)  with a win in their final four games.

WHAT’S NEXT: FAMU will have a bye week on October 20, before returning to action the following week, October 27 against the Morgan State Bears in Bragg Stadium at 4:00 p.m.

UMES Hawks pick up critical MEAC win in comeback fashion

BALTIMORE, Maryland — Facing a 2-0 deficit for the second straight match, the University of Maryland Eastern Shore volleyball team had to pull off a strenuous comeback to avoid a two game conference losing streak. But the Hawks did rally, closing out two nail biting set wins before finishing Coppin State in a dramatic five set victory (18-25, 23-25, 25-23, 26-24, 15-12).

The Shore (6-12, 3-1 MEAC) remains tied with Morgan State for second place in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Northern Division.

Things looked bleak after the second set. Coppin State rallied from 20-12 behind, scoring 13 of the next 16 points for their 2-0 lead. Any blunder by the Hawks after that would have resulted in their first MEAC losing streak since the 2015 season, when they dropped back-to-back contests with Howard and Morgan State.

BOX SCORE

Instead the Hawks' rally marks the first time the team rallied from two sets down to win since September 26, 2014, when they accomplished the feat over Delaware State.

A trio of athletes - senior Lucia Babic (Sisak, Croatia), senior Rachel Kayongo (Northridge, California) and sophomore Sola Okesanjo (Chicago, Illinois - finished the match with double-digit kills. Babic led The Shore with 17 putaways. Senior defender Koya Sowells (Missouri City, Texas) averaged five digs per set for a career high of 25. Freshman defender Stella Johnson (Newport News, Virginia) added 12 digs from the back row.

Okesanjo was the most efficient hitter with a .526 percentage, while also adding a pair of blocks. But it was freshman Mauri Carver (Elizabeth City, North Carolina) who led the match with five block participations. Fellow freshman Alexis Lee (Wilmington, Delaware) added four blocks, including two solos.

Coppin State (6-17, 1-3 MEAC) saw over five kills per set from Miajavon Coleman, who led the match with 28. Four Eagles earned double-digit digs, and setter Brianna Lang nearly capped 10 assists per set for a total of 49.

After the Hawks dropped the first two sets, they found themselves down 8-4 in set three. Quickly rallying to an 11-10, lead Eastern Shore continued to drive the score up to 20-14. They then fended off another Coppin charge to stay alive with a two point win.

In set four, both teams had early charges before drawing level all the way to extra volleys. The Shore scored the last three out of four to win 26-24 and force the winner-take-all fifth set. Riding that momentum the Hawks overwhelmed the Eagles with a 7-1 start, coasting to a three point win to take the match.

The comeback victory extends Maryland Eastern Shore's winning streak against Coppin State to eight consecutive matches.

Next up will be a battle for second place with the Morgan State Bears. A 3 p.m. serve is on tap from Hill Field House in Baltimore Sunday (Oct. 14).
