Haywood you look at this? XU beats Tougaloo again

TOUGALOO, Mississippi — Claudia Haywood, a longtime volleyball nemesis of Tougaloo, reprised that role Saturday.

Haywood had a season-high-tying 12 kills and hit .579 to lead Xavier University of Louisiana in a 25-20, 25-16, 27-25 victory against the Lady Bulldogs. It was the fifth consecutive victory for the Gold Nuggets (13-7, 8-1 Gulf Coast Athletic Conference), who remained a half-match behind SUNO in the GCAC standings.

Haywood, a senior middle blocker and a GCAC Preseason Co-Player of the Year, rebounded from a two-match slump in which she hit .030 in 33 attacks. She was the only Gold Nugget to reach double figures in kills, and she raised her career hitting percentage against Tougaloo to .540 in eight matches: 87 kills and 13 errors in 137 attacks. In two matches this season against Tougaloo, Haywood hit .594 with 21 kills and two errors in 32 attacks.

Xavier hit .372, its second-highest percentage this season and its best on the road by nearly 100 points. Patricia Young Yen had nine kills and hit .563, and Jada Broussard had six kills an hit .667. Neither Young Yen nor Broussard produced an attack error.

Taylor Reuther had eight kills and 11 digs for Xavier. Darian Harris had 18 digs, and CeCe Williamshad 10.

Chassidy Harris had nine kills for Tougaloo (8-18, 3-6). Kristin Rice had eight blocks, and Kayla Cole had 26 digs.

The Gold Nuggets won the third set after trailing 7-2.

Xavier completed a two-match regular-sweep of Tougaloo and is 12-0 all-time against the Lady Bulldogs.

SUNO, which beat Xavier in five sets Sept. 25, maintained its conference lead with a 25-11, 23-25, 25-12, 25-12 home victory against Philander Smith. SUNO will visit Xavier at 1 p.m. next Saturday. The Gold Nuggets' next match will start at 6 p.m. Thursday at another city rival, Loyola.

Men of steal: JCSU picks Bears clean, 4 more interceptions in 17-10 win vs. Shaw

CHARLOTTE, North Carolina -- Big-play fever is spreading on Johnson C. Smith’s defense.

The Golden Bulls have eight interceptions in the last two games – both wins – with free safety Carlo Thomas accounting for seven of them. The other belongs to Jamaal Tutt, whose 21-yard return for a touchdown proved to be the winning margin in Saturday’s 17-10 win against CIAA Southern Division rival Shaw.

“Carlo is having a phenomenal year, but he’s such an athlete, he can see things happening before other people can,” JCSU coach Kermit Blount said. “I’m real happy for Tutt because he works tremendously hard to get where he is and for him to come up with a pick-six, it’s a great feeling for him.”

Tutt’s first interception was the result of Bryce Smith tipping Terrence Shambray’s attempted screen pass in the third quarter. The ball fluttered down to Tutt, who ran untouched for the score and a 17-point Golden Bulls lead.

WSSU gets lucky at Livingstone

SALISBURY, North Carolina — A little luck went a long way for Winston-Salem State on Saturday afternoon.

The Rams held on to beat the determined Livingstone Blue Bears 23-21 on Saturday afternoon, but it wasn’t easy.

With 20 seconds left and the dependable Leo Manzo ready to attempt a 32-yard field goal, it looked as if the Blue Bears were going to break their 12-game losing streak against the Rams. But Manzo, who was 3 of 4 on field goal attempts this season and made a 54-yarder against St. Aug’s two weeks ago, pushed the attempt just right, and the Rams stayed unbeaten in Southern Division play.

How the Rams (4-4, 3-0 Southern Division) even took the lead at 23-21 with less than seven minutes to go involved luck.

Kicker Will Johnson attempted a 30-yard field goal but Livingstone was whistled for roughing the kicker on the missed attempt.

Fayetteville State routs Saint Augustine's 40-18 to keep CIAA title hopes alive

FAYETTEVILLE, North Carolina -- Fayetteville State receiver Tavon Gatlin sprinted across the goal line and pointed directly at former teammate Kasunn Williams, who had risen from his front-row seat in the end-zone bleachers.

They embraced and engaged in a choreographed salute, making sure to celebrate that Williams' prediction of a three-touchdown performance had come true.

Thanks to a fourth-quarter outburst, the Broncos' big-picture goal is still attainable.

Southern Jaguars defense, special teams help power 40-21 win over Texas Southern

ALWAYS WATCH IN 1080p HD, WIDE SCREEN

HOUSTON, Texas -- A blocked punt. A muffed punt. A fumble on the 1-yard line. And more dropped passes.

Early on, Southern’s game against Texas Southern was looking every bit like the Jaguars’ five-point home loss to Prairie View the week before.

In the second half, Southern made sure it didn’t finish that way.

Instead, it was the Jaguars defense and special teams making big plays, while the offense rode the legs of Lenard Tillery for a 40-21 win over TSU in a rain-soaked BBVA Compass Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

Tillery ran for a career-high 196 yards and two touchdowns on 25 carries, while a punt block and sack-forcing fumble proved the difference in a pivotal third quarter.

“We had our backs against the wall, and I think they stepped up and accepted the challenge,” Southern coach Dawson Odums said.

“We just challenged our guys to get off the field defensively and stay on the field offensively. When we do that, we are going to be successful.”

JACKSON, Mississippi --  Junior signal caller Jarin Morikawa, in his first career start for the Tigers, passed for 333 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Jackson State Tigers (2-5, 2-3 SWAC) to a 37-3 win over the Arkansas-Pine Bluff Golden Lions (1-6, 0-5 SWAC) Saturday at Mississippi Veterans Memorial Stadium. The win snapped a two game losing streak for the Tigers. The 37 points scored were also a season high for JSU.

Morikawa, who completed 25 of 40 passing attempts, connected with 11 different receivers en route to the homecoming game victory. All of his passing numbers were career highs for the Hawaii native. His only negative play came on a sack for one yard.
Senior WR Devin Fosselman also had a career day as he hauled in six passes for a career high 175 yards and three touchdowns. The Woodville, Miss. native caught a short pass from Morikawa and raced 48 yards to give the Tigers  an early 7-0 lead – following a Ryan Deising extra point – on the opening drive of the game. His second touchdown reception was on a 10 yard pass at the 4:39 mark in the second quarter, making the score 24-0. His final TD was a 59-yard strike to open the fourth quarter, making the score 34-3.

When Morikawa and Fosselman were not hooking up, Robert Johnson, IV helped the Tigers eat up the clock as he spearheaded a solid rushing attack. His only score of the game came on a 42-yard dash. The run capped a two-play 45 yard drive and put JSU ahead 17-0 with 7:10 left in the second quarter.

The Tigers offense was clicking on all cylinders, finishing with 136 rushing yards, 333 passing yards for a total 469 total yards. JSU had no interceptions of fumbles and only had three penalties for 15 yards.

The Tigers defense applied constant pressure to UAPB QB Nolan Sorensen. Sorensen was held to 99 passing yards and 27 rushing yards. He was sacked only twice but the Tigers had a season high 16 QB hurries. The Tigers allowed only nine UAPB first downs, 76 rushing yards and 99 passing yards.

Keontre Anderson finished the game with seven QB hurries and Teddrick Terrell had five. Terrell and Javancy Jones each recorded a sack on Sorensen.

Senior K Ryan Deising was also a key contributor for the Tigers, connecting on three of four field goals. He nailed a season long 49-yarder with 3:09 left in the game, making the final score 37-3. The Nashville, Tenn. native connected on his first field goal, a 20-yard attempt, with 10 seconds remaining in the first quarter – which effectively put the game out of reach for the Golden Lions.

Grambling sloshes past MVSU

GRAMBLING, Louisiana -- Mississippi Valley State coach Rick Comegy declared there were brighter days ahead for the Delta Devils football program earlier this week after it was competitive in a loss to Texas Southern a week ago.

Saturday was not one of those brighter days.

The rain poured down and a steady stream of errors came with it in Mississippi Valley State’s 49-14 loss to Grambling in a SWAC matchup at Eddie Robinson Stadium.

“We played a real excellent football team,” Comegy said after the game. “Both had a lot of mistakes, but they were able to capitalize on theirs and we weren’t.”

The Delta Devils (0-8, 0-6 SWAC) showed some signs of life in the first quarter. Defensive back Farrean Toney recorded an interception, and Mississippi Valley State was able to keep the score close.

It took advantage of a short field when running back Thomas Stokes Jr. capped a 32-yard drive with a 2-yard touchdown run.

Stokes’ run brought the Delta Devils within seven points with 6:51 left in the first, then Grambling (6-2, 6-0 SWAC) dropped the hammer.

S.C. State Cruises to 34-7 Win Over Delaware State

DOVER, Delaware -- South Carolina State posted a much needed win in a 34-7 victory over Delaware State Saturday (Oct. 24) at Alumni Stadium.

The Bulldogs improve to 4-3 overall, 3-1 in the MEAC, while Hornets remain winless at 0-7, 0-4 in the MEAC. Freshman quarterback Caleb York sparked the offense with his third 200-yard or more passing performance on the day.

"It was a good win for us," said a happy and excited Buddy Pough after the game. "We got off to another fast start, taking advantage of some outstanding play by our special teams. (Tevin) Richard made some great plays for us early that got us two quick scores. He's fun to watch out there, and we had some other players to make some good plays us as well.

"Caleb (York) did a good job in the passing game," continued the Bulldog head coach. "We thought coming in we would have to put a lot on his shoulder as we were concerned about a couple of their players on their defensive line bottling up our running game. He came through for us, as did our receivers. But, we still have a lot of work to do and we just need to keep getting better every week."

York finished with a game-high 17-of-28 for 241 yards and two touchdowns. Senior wide receiver Taquan West had his best outing of the season with nine (9) catches for 113 yards. Redshirt freshman Lynard Jamison dazzled the crowd once again for the second straight week with three (3) catches for 93-yards and a touchdown.

Senior reserve linebacker Tevin Richards highlighted the special teams with five (5) tackles, two (2) forced fumbles which led to a 10-yard touchdown run and two block punts.

The defense was spearheaded by All-American defensive lineman Javon Hargrave with eight (8) tackles, three (3) sacks, four (4.0) tackles for loss for 24-yards and one forced fumble.

NEXT UP: The Bulldogs return home to celebrate "Homecoming 2015" when they host the visiting Pirates of Hampton University at O.C. Dawson Stadium. Kickoff is 1:30 p.m.

NCCU Battles Morgan State for Rematch Victory

DURHAM, North Carolina – After a one-point loss in 2014, the North Carolina Central University Eagles made for a successful rematch, defeating the Morgan State University Bears, 20-17, on Saturday, Oct. 24 in O'Kelly-Riddick Stadium.

A late fourth-quarter interception from Ryan Smith appeared to be the most pivotal moment of Saturday's battle, as he stopped what would have been a Morgan State (3-4, 3-2) touchdown and possibly a loss for the Eagles (4-3, 3-1).

Redshirt freshman Dorrel McClain headed the ground attack with 113 of the team's 187 rushing yards, along with two touchdowns for the Eagles.

On defense, C.J. Moore was the leader with 10 total tackles, including 2.5 tackles for a loss. NCCU's defense obtained 14 total tackles for a loss, four sacks, and the Eagles held the Morgan State offense to -11 rushing yards. Defensive linemenRichard Mitchell and Darius Spruill accounted for five takedowns, including 2.5 hits for a loss with 1.5 sacks each for NCCU. Spruill also forced and recovered a fumble.

Lavontis Smith took on a 41-yard punt return in the first quarter, placing the Eagles in good position for McClain to fight through the Bears defense and pick up a one-yard rushing touchdown. The Eagles were first on the scoreboard, leading 7-0.

Redshirt senior Nathan Scruggs had a leaping 19-yard catch, advancing the Eagles to the Morgan State 21-yard line. McClain toughed his way through for a two-yard touchdown, and NCCU dominated Morgan State 14-0 at the close of the first quarter.

A two-yard rushing touchdown from Morgan State quarterback Seth Higgins gave the Bears control of the field before their visit to the locker room, though they were still trailing, 14-7.

Coming out of the locker room, the Bears maintained the momentum with another early third-quarter touchdown. A pass to Morgan State tight end Willie Gillus from Higgins knotted the score at 14.

The battle was only tied for moments, because NCCU freshman Nigel Macauley stepped on the field attempting a 47-yard field goal and regained the lead for the Eagles at 17-14 in the third quarter.

No score went unattended as the game reached the final quarter. Morgan State responded to the NCCU field goal with one of their own, this time for 50 yards off the foot of Chris Moller. The score was then tied at 17.

The Bears lined up to punt with under eight minutes remaining, but a blocked punt by the Eagles led to a fumble recovery, bringing Macauley back in action for the Eagles. Macauley's field goal broke the tie for the second time, giving the Eagles their 20-17 lead.

After Smith's interception, the Eagles managed to wind down the clock with 2:48 remaining, and they now look to take on Norfolk State University on Saturday, Oct. 31 at 2 p.m. back in O'Kelly-Riddick Stadium for NCCU's homecoming.

NOTES:

NCCU freshman kicker Nigel Macauley, who tops the NCAA Division I-FCS with an average of 2.0 field goals per game and is the top scorer in the MEAC, made two field goals, including the game-winner from 30 yards out with 6:19 remaining.

NCCU redshirt-freshman running back Dorrel McClain recorded his second straight 100-yard rushing performance and third of the season with 113 yards and two touchdowns on the ground versus Morgan State.

NCCU held Morgan State to minus-11 rushing yards, fewest rush yards by an opponent since Sept. 29, 2001 when Edward Waters finished with minus-42 rush yards.

NCCU amassed 14 tackles for a loss, including four sacks, resulting in a loss of 53 yards.

NCCU head coach Jerry Mack celebrated his 35th birthday on Saturday, Oct. 24. He was born Oct. 24, 1980 in Memphis, Tennessee.

N.C.A&T Aggies Look Great At Earth's Greatest Homecoming

GREENSBORO, North Carolina -- The twenty-fourth-ranked North Carolina A&T football team has accomplished a few things as the midway portion of the season rolls through.

Last week the Aggies passed a crucial test by beating MEAC power Bethune-Cookman. N.C. A&T is nationally ranked and on Saturday with thousands upon thousands of fans in and around Aggie Stadium, N.C. A&T, the No. 1 team in black college football, routed longtime rival Howard, 65-14 to win the school’s fifth straight homecoming.

The win secures N.C. A&T’s fourth straight winning season. The Aggies (6-1, 4-0 MEAC) have now won five straight and have not lost to a Division I-FCS program all season. N.C. A&T has also won nine straight over conference opponents at home dating back to 2013. Junior running back Tarik Cohen finished with 137 yards and three touchdowns on 17 carries. It was his fourth career three-touchdown game.

But Broadway has been around long enough to know that meeting expectations simply means more will be added.

“When I first got here (the Aggie faithful) told me to just win homecoming,” said Broadway as he laughed and joked. “After we started winning homecoming, they said let’s beat (N.C. Central). Then you beat Central and they say let’s win the conference. Then when you win the conference, they say let’s go to a bowl game. I signed up to win homecoming and beat Central. They keep changing the rules on me as we go.”

Broadway followed up his jovial statement by saying the Aggies football program expects to be good. Despite his team’s six wins, he still believes his team far away from reaching its potential as a football team.

“My problem is I like for everything to be perfect,” said Broadway. ”Some of the mistakes out there are just unacceptable. We have to continue to grow. But to be 6-1, I’m proud of our players. I’m proud of our coaches. I’m proud of everybody – our administration!”

The Aggies did find themselves trailing 14-13 to Howard (0-7, 0-5 MEAC) after Howard quarterback Kalen Johnson scrambled to his left and fired a dart on the run to the end zone where Tomlin Antoine dove on top of it for a 15-yard touchdown reception with 10:34 remaining in the first half. But the Aggies answered with an 11-play, 86-yard drive that culminated with a masterful 31-yard Cohen touchdown run in which Cohen made a couple moves at the line of scrimmage to break free before making a stutter step to avoid another defender in the open field and final juke move to sprint into the end zone.

A&T 65, Howard 14

It was a downward spiral from there for the Bison. After a three-and-out from the Bison, the Aggies scored in four plays as senior quarterback Kwashaun Quick connected on an 8-yard touchdown pass to junior Denzel Keyes on a crossing pattern. Junior Cody Jones added a field goal before halftime to give the Aggies a 30-14 advantage.

Howard did stop the Aggies on their opening drive of the second half, but Howard ended its first second-half drive with a fumble on a punt attempt which gave the Aggies the ball at Howard’s 21-yard line. After a 14-yard loss by Cohen, redshirt freshman quarterback Lamar Raynard completed a 15-yard pass to Cohen and a 19-yard reception to Keyes to set up a 1-yard run by Cohen to all but put the Bison away.

Bethune-Cookman wins slugfest with Norfolk State, 59-49

DAYTONA BEACH — A large homecoming crowd of 9,875 at Daytona Municipal Stadium was treated to fireworks Saturday, as Bethune-Cookman raced past Norfolk State, 59-49.

The Wildcats (6-2, 4-1 MEAC) put on a show all day, posting season highs in points and total offense (589). Quentin Williams led the way with a career-high 374 passing yards and five total touchdowns. Michael Jones eclipsed the century mark in rushing (125 yards) and receiving (103).

“We always want to take what the defense gives us,” B-CU coach Terry Sims said. “Quentin did a good job of finding our playmakers, and the offensive line did a great job creating lanes and giving Quentin time.”

Greg Hankerson helped Norfolk State keep pace, passing for 238 yards and four touchdowns, and adding 88 rushing yards.

B-CU jumped ahead early on Anthony Jordan’s 3-yard touchdown run, followed by a 25-yard score from Williams to Frank Brown.

WVSU Yellow Jackets defeat Glenville State, Move into 3rd Place

INSTITUTE, West Virginia -- Yes, it has been said that any win is a good one.

But the Yellow Jackets' 24-21 victory over visiting Glenville State felt a little better than most.

It moved WVSU into third place in the Mountain East Conference standings. The Yellow Jackets have not been that high this late in the season in years.

It assured the Jackets of at least a break even season in league play with two more conference contests still on the schedule.

The win was the first for the program over a team with a winning record at kickoff this season (opening game opponent Fairmont State improved to 4-3 with a win Saturday).

The Yellow Jackets had lost seven straight to the Pioneers.

With a mark of 5-3 overall and in MEC play the Yellow Jackets now need just one win in their remaining three games to record the program's first winning season since 2008 and only their third in the last 22 years.

All of the above resulted from Saturday's victory.

Though the final score reflects just how close the game was in the early going it looked like WVSU might just cruise to an easy win.

But while the Yellow Jackets never trailed they also could never pull away from the Pioneers (5-3, 4-3 in MEC) in a contest full of twists, turns, and sudden shifts in momentum.

"We started very hot and weathered the momentum swings," WVSU Head Coach Jon Anderson said. "Then we made enough plays down the stretch."

WVSU received the opening kickoff and promptly ate up 5:09 of the clock with a 12 play, 69-yard drive to take a 7-0 lead on a Dionta Brown 1-yard run.

"The game plan was to go out and be physical," Anderson said. "We wanted to establish the running game early."

On Glenville's first possession the Jackets quickly added to their league leading interception total when Jesse Umeh came down with a deflected pass at the Pioneers' 27 and returned it to the 20.2421

WVSU capitalized as quarterback Matt Kinnick (right) found Joe Morris on third and nine with a 19-yard scoring strike to push the score to 14-0 with 8:02 remaining in the first period.

Pioneer quarterback Sean Steele ahd been intercepted just three times all season going into Saturday. Mitch Rowell's pick later in the game gave WVSU two on the day.

Glenville State pulled to within 14-7 on the Pioneers' next possession but the Yellow Jackets answered immediately with a six-play, 69-yard drive capped off by Kinnick's 47-yard scoring toss to Tyrell Henderson.

That gave WVSU a 21-7 lead after one quarter.

Then as quickly as the points had been rolling onto the scoreboard, the defenses of both teams became factors.

While the visitors ended up ahead in nearly all of the statistical categories there was one critical area where the Jackets dominated.

Glenville converted just 2-of-17 third down attempts.

"That's outstanding," Anderson said. "The defense did a great job."

Both squads struggled to move the ball in the second quarter with the only score coming on a 19-yard pass play from Glenville 4:32 before halftime.

The Pioneers' first drive of the second half ended when the Jackets' Wesley Sackey-Rush (below, right) forced a fumble that was recovered by teammate Ayinde Warren.
2446 The Yellow Jackets were then forced to punt on their next possession.

Glenville took advantage of good field position going 53 yards on six-plays to knot the score at 21-21

"Their were huge momentum shifts in that game," Anderson said. "(The players) just kept playing, they believed in each other."

Morris returned the ensuing kickoff from the three to the 33 where WVSU began what proved to be the game-winning drive.

After 11 plays the Yellow Jackets had advanced the ball to the Glenville 19 where Anthony Herrera hit a 36-yard field goal for a 24-21 lead that would hold for the rest of the contest.

"The offense gave us the lead," Anderson said. "Then the defense protected it in the fourth quarter."

Kinnick hit eight of his first 10 passes and finished 18-of-30 for 188 yards and two touchdowns.

Brown ended up with 47 yards on the ground while Henderson caught three passes for 61 yards and Morris four for 43.

The WVSU defense held the Pioneers 21 points bel
ow their scoring average and 124 yards under their conference leading 501.7 per game.

Sophomore Dennis Gardeck paced the Yellow Jackets with 13 tackles including two sacks. Rowell added 12 tackles and Jordan Pierce 10.

William & Mary blitzes handcuff Hampton

HAMPTON, Virginia -- Hampton entered Saturday with the MEAC's most prolific passing offense. But this wasn't the MEAC.

And it didn't look much like Hampton.

Kendell Anderson rushed for 191 yards and a touchdown and surging William & Mary rode a dominant first half to an easy 40-7 non-conference win over the Pirates at Zable Stadium.

The Tribe (5-2), celebrating homecoming before a capacity crowd of 12,259, held Hampton to 150 yards of total offense - including just 35 in the first half - to win for the third straight time. The Pirates (4-4), who were averaging 245.6 passing yards per game, managed only 123 in the air - most of them late and inconsequential.

William & Mary, meanwhile, piled up a season-high 526 yards of total offense.

"I'm embarrassed," Hampton coach Connell Maynor said. "I'm the head coach. It's my responsibility. The way my team performed today was very embarrassing.

'Great Day to be an Aggie'

GREENBORO, North Carolina -- Before the end of the third quarter, with the game well in hand, the bleacher seats inside Aggie Stadium began to empty.

The siren song of the tailgate parties outside the stadium called to the 21,500-plus packed shoulder-to-shoulder. The ocean of humanity began its ebb tide toward the live music, vendors and cookouts.
There was much to celebrate.

Tarik Cohen ran for 137 yards and three touchdowns on 17 carries, and N.C. A&T’s defense held winless Howard to 31 rushing yards as the Aggies clobbered the Bison 65-14.

“Happy homecoming,” A&T coach Rod Broadway said. “... I’m proud of everybody today. It’s a great day to be an Aggie.”

Broadway is now 5-0 on homecoming. After seven straight homecoming losses had seriously wounded Aggie Pride, it’s the game he was hired to win.

Albany State hopes to continue momentum

ALBANY, Georgia -- With momentum still in their favor after a big homecoming victory, the Albany State Rams are hoping to rain on Clark-Atlanta University’s parade as they face the Panthers for homecoming.

The ASU defense achieved their first shutout of the season last week thanks to three interceptions in the first quarter. Marquez Hodo earned SIAC Newcomer of the Week honors after picking off two passes in the 38-0 contest against Morehouse.

The defense put the offense in the position to make plays, but outside of Jarvis Small, who rushed for more than 100 yards again, ASU had trouble moving the ball down the field and putting points on the board, a goal head coach Dan Land set before the game.

The offense looked much more fluid in the second half as quarterback Caleb Edmonds finished with 169 passing yards and no interceptions. Offensive coordinator Steve Smith said they had to take it back to the basics at the half.

Rams, Blue Bears to face off in Salisbury

SALISBURY, North Carolina -- Winston-Salem State can take another step toward its fifth straight Southern Division title, but the next step isn’t easy.

A very good Livingstone Blue Bears team waits for the Rams today at 1 p.m. at Memorial Stadium in Salisbury.

Even though the Rams have won the last 12 games against the Blue Bears, this should be a good game.

For the first time in a long time, the Blue Bears have more fire power on offense than the Rams and appear to be more experienced.

Leading that charge on offense for the Blue Bears, who are averaging 28 points a game, is quarterback Drew Powell. He’s a four-year starter and one of the most complete quarterbacks in the CIAA.

Rematch vs Bowie State 'means a lot for everybody' on Virginia Union roster

RICHMOND, Virginia -- Virginia Union quarterback Shawheem Dowdy still remembers the play that ended his 2014 season.

It was exactly one year and a day ago - Virginia Union was hosting Bowie State at Hovey Field.

The Panthers ran a screen-play, “and the D-end jumped up the field, he played the screen,” Dowdy recalls, “so I stepped up in the pocket and took off and they grabbed me when I was trying to make it to the ground. My body went one way and my knee went the other way and I heard a pop in my knee.”

Not only was it his knee, he fractured his ankle on that same play. Dowdy had taken over for the starter at the time, Kenneth Graham, who had also been injured earlier in the game.

McCray steps forward for Clark Atlanta

ATLANTA, Georgia -- Clark Atlanta coach Kevin Ramsey has found someone to build his offense around.

Ramsey has turned to running back Jaha McCray, who transferred from Southwest Baptist in Bolivar, Mo., and saw limited action until this month.

McCray, a sophomore, has rushed for more than 100 yards in each of the past two games and scored on a 98-yard run in the Panthers’ 24-3 victory over Benedict, Ramsey’s first win at Clark Atlanta.

He also caught three passes for 88 yards last week and has 17 receptions for 188 yards this season.

“No doubt. He’s our guy,” Ramsey said. “He’s talented. We knew it was a matter of getting him healthy and him clicking with the offense and getting the ball in his hands.”

McCray leads the Panthers (1-6, 1-2 in the SIAC) with 309 yards on 63 carries.
