DURHAM, North Carolina — Before Saturday’s game between N.C. Central and Bethune-Cookman, Eagles coach Henry Frazier III said a little luck could help his team win the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference championship.
The Eagles very well may need that rabbit’s foot.
NCCU and Bethune-Cookman entered the contest tied for first place in the MEAC, but the Wildcats’ 42-17 win over the Eagles gave them the league’s top spot.
The matchup pitted NCCU, with the MEAC’s No. 1 rushing defense, against a Bethune-Cookman team that boasted the league’s top rushing offense.
Bethune-Cookman won the ground battle, making the difference in the war.
The Wildcats rushed for 274 yards, 158 from Isidore Jackson, who carried the ball 14 times and scored twice, including a 93-yard touchdown.
Bethune-Cookman had been averaging 229.6 yards and 29 points, but the Wildcats outdid themselves against NCCU, which was the MEAC’s highest-scoring squad heading into the game.
The teams played to a 14-14 halftime stalemate, but Bethune-Cookman cranked up its offense in the second half and outscored NCCU 28-3.
