CHICAGO, Illinois – Junior Chanel Wilson-Stewart (Hillside, Ill./St. Joseph's) recorded career-highs with 16 points and 12 rebounds in Chicago State women's basketball's 74-51 win over the Indiana Tech Warriors on Saturday (Nov. 9). Wilson-Stewart also tied a career high with three steals and two blocks in the season opening win. It is her second double-double of her career.
Junior Tierra Williams (Detroit, Mich./Lathrup) had a game-high 23 points along with five steals while junior Paris Williams (St. Louis, Mo./Pattonville) chipped in 18 points in the winning effort. Sophomore Jasmine Sanders (Country Club Hills, Ill./Hillcrest) finished with 12 points, eight assists, six rebounds and three steals.
Chicago State started the game on a 15-2 run after a Tierra Williams (Detroit, Mich./Lathrup) 3-pointer with 15:43 remaining in the first half. Head coach Angela Jackson's squad maintained a 37-21 lead with 3:07 to go in the first half before Indiana Tech ended the first stanza on a 10-3 run.
In the second half, the Cougars defense held Indiana Tech to 17.2 percent (5-29) shooting and created 11 turnovers. The Warriors cut the deficit to eight (45-37) with 14:01 remaining in the game, but Chicago State went on a 10-0 run and Indiana Tech never got any closer.
"It's just nice to get a win in your own building," Jackson said. "I just thought the women were awesome, they fought and fought and fought so I'm happy for them."
The Cougars continue their non-conference schedule vs. Big Ten opponent Northwestern on Wednesday (Nov. 13).
