Dray Joseph sets Southern career passing mark

Senior surpasses Bryant Lee, a longtime friend of the family

BATON ROUGE, Louisiana  -- Having already clinched a berth in the SWAC championship game, Southern had a rare chance to turn its 53-0 win over Clark Atlanta into an all-game celebration at Mumford Stadium.

The game marked the final home contest for Southern’s seniors, and it was only fitting that senior Dray Joseph’s chase of former quarterback Bryant Lee’s records provided the evening’s only suspense.

And on this evening, it didn’t take Joseph long to catch Lee, moving ahead to become Southern’s all-time leader for career passing yards.

With Southern leading 13-0 midway through the first quarter, Joseph found Lee Doss for a 6-yard gain. The short crossing route pushed Joseph in front of Lee, who threw for 8,194 yards from 2005-2009.

Game officials stopped play with 6:10 left in the first quarter as Joseph was recognized for his accomplishment.

“I broke the record. It’s a good thing,” Joseph said. “Credit (goes) to my teammates.”
