HAMPTON, Virginia -- Novelle Dickenson, Director of Athletics at Hampton University, has announced that Connell Maynor, a veteran with more than 20 years of football experience as a player and coach, has been named the next head coach of the Pirates.Maynor has served the past four seasons as head coach at Division II Winston-Salem State University; prior to that, he served as offensive coordinator at Fayetteville State.
"I am very excited for the opportunity that Dr. Harvey, Mr. Dickenson , Dr. Smith and Hampton University has given to me, " said Maynor.
In his four seasons at Winston-Salem State, Maynor led the Rams to a 45-6 overall record and a 29-2 mark in the CIAA. He led the Rams to three straight CIAA championships; three straight appearances in the NCAA Div. II playoffs; two Super Region One titles; an NCAA Semifinal appearance in 2011; and an NCAA Div. II National Championship appearance and runner-up title.
"I am very excited about having a veteran winner at the helm of the Pirate football program," said Dickenson. "I believe that Coach Maynor is very well poised and has the acumen to take the program in the right direction. Given his past success, we have great expectations for the future of Pirate football."
The Rams also captured the 2011 and 2012 HBCU National Football Championships.

Maynor was also named CIAA Coach of the Year in 2011 and 2012, Boxtorow HBCU Coach of the Year, Pigskin Club of Washington, D.C. CIAA Coach of the Year, Black College Sports Page BAAD Team Coach of the Year, and Don Hansen Football Gazette Super Region One Coach of the Year.
He was also named the 2011 Sheridan Broadcasting National HBCU Coach of the Year.
"I am very excited to get on campus and meet the players, athletic staff and all of those who are associated with the program. I am also excited about getting out there on the recruiting trail so we can get Hampton back to its winning ways," stated Manyor. "I know that Hampton is not only known for having great athletic programs but also outstanding academics and that is something that I want to help that I ensure continues. I want to continue that Standard of Excellence that Hampton is and has always been known for so I am ready to get things going," said Maynor.
Maynor is no stranger to improving programs; the year prior to his arrival, WSSU went 1-10 – only to go 8-2 in his first season at the helm. His teams have seen just four losses in the past three years, with trips to the NCAA Div. II playoffs each year.
Maynor brings more than two decades of football experience both as a coach and as a player, in the intercollegiate and professional ranks, and is the proud owner of 13 championships: six as a player and seven as a coach.
Prior to his time at WSSU, Maynor spent 10 seasons at Fayetteville State University as a member of the Broncos' award-winning football staff, most recently serving as both the quarterbacks coach and offensive coordinator. He helped lead Fayetteville State to four CIAA title game appearances and three CIAA championships (2002, 2003, and 2009).
In addition to his collegiate coaching responsibilities, Maynor served as the offensive coordinator for the Arena Football League's Philadelphia Soul from 2006-2008, where he helped lead the Soul to the Arena Bowl XXII World Championship in 2008.
Under his leadership, the Soul ranked first in the AFL in scoring offense (62 ppg), touchdowns (132), touchdown passes (102), and red zone efficiency (85 percent) in 2008.
Maynor played at WSSU and North Carolina A&T; he led the Aggies to the 1991 MEAC title and was named the MEAC Offensive Player of the Year.
A veteran of both the CIAA and the MEAC, Maynor has extensive experience at both the Division I and Division II levels, and he has demonstrated an extensive recruiting acumen, which will immediately help him as he prepares to get the Pirates back to their winning ways.
