Maynor’s move has widespread support

WINSTON-SALEM, North Carolina  -- Casey Davenport, a junior defensive lineman at Winston-Salem State, said after each final game of the past three seasons, Coach Connell Maynor addressed his team with words of warning.

“He’d always tell us that he will likely interview with other schools, but that he wouldn’t take the job unless it was a good situation for he and his family,” Davenport said Tuesday. “Well, obviously he thought this was a good fit for him, so I’m happy for him.”

Maynor announced Tuesday that he is leaving WSSU after four seasons to become the head coach at Hampton, a move that will take him from Division II and the CIAA to Division I’s Football Championship Subdivision and the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference.

As a private school, Hampton does not have to reveal coaching salaries. Maynor — who was making $160,000 a year at WSSU — only smiled when asked about his new salary.
