MONROE, Louisiana -- Alcorn State University defeated host, Louisiana-Monroe 4-3 in day one of the Warhawk Classic. This was Alcorn’s first non-conference win against a Division I school in six years.
The Lady Braves got off to a slow start and allowed the Warhawks to gain a run in the second inning. Alcorn State (2-5) plated three runs on a pair of homers in the top of the third. Hannah Vesper delivered the big blow of the inning with a two-run shot to straightaway center.
Devon Ryan’s solo shot in the top of the fifth proved to be the game winner for the Lady Braves.
Jessica Castillo (1-0) lifted the win for the Alcorn, she struck out seven in 4.2 innings.
After trailing 4-1, ULM (8-4) was unsuccessful keeping their starting lead falling in the bottom of the seventh. Jessica Colliver (2-2) received the loss giving up four hits on three runs in 2.1 innings.
