NCAA Tournament: Hampton headed for play-in game as 16 seed

Early projections from the NCAA are that each team’s conference will net $1.53 million for each game a team plays.

HAMPTON, Virginia -- The Hampton Pirates are one of the most unlikely teams in this year’s tournament field, having won four games at the MEAC tournament this weekend to secure their bid.

Hampton entered the tourney at Norfolk’s Scope Arena as the No. 6 seed, sporting a losing record. Over the course of four games, though, they knocked off hometown favorite Norfolk State, then beat Delaware on Saturday for the title.

The Pirates won those games without leading scorer Dwight Meikle, who is nursing an ankle injury.

Their reward is a No. 16 seed in the NCAA tournament and a trip to the play-in game in Dayton, Ohio this Tuesday night against Manhattan (19-13). Tipoff is slated for 6:40 p.m.

Should the Pirates (16-17) win the play-in game, they’ll get to face No. 1 seed Kentucky on Thursday.
