NEW ORLEANS -- The Southern baseball team moved within one game of playing for the SWAC championship when it beat Alabama State 13-12 in 10 innings, in a second-round conference tournament game Thursday at Wesley Barrow Stadium in New Orleans.A two-out error by Southern in the bottom of the ninth let Alabama State score two runs to tie the score at 12-12. Southern regained the lead in the 10th when D.J. Wallace singled home Marcus Tomlin with one out.
The blown lead for Southern was the second of the game. The Jaguars led 8-0 after the top of the fourth, and trailed 9-8 after five innings. Alabama State pulled even with eight runs in the fourth, and added another run in the fifth.
In the ninth, Southern's Lance Jones hit a solo home run for what appeared to be an insurance run for a 12-9 lead, before Alabama State scored three runs, including the last two on a grounder with two outs.
