Declining enrollment at NSU leads to a Spartan challenge

Every full-time student pays approximately $1,486 in fees to pay for athletics.

NORFOLK, Virginia -- On the afternoon of March 16, 2012, Norfolk State University became the talk of the nation.

Tens of millions of people, including many who had never heard of the school, watched a poised NSU basketball team become the Cinderella of the NCAA tournament by toppling No. 2 seed Missouri.

For days following one of the biggest upsets in tournament history, national media outlets sang the praises of coach Anthony Evans and star forward Kyle O'Quinn.

Ron Davis, a retired Philip Morris executive who played football at Norfolk State, watched at home in Chesterfield County with members of his church. "I was so proud of my school," he said.

"That game touched everyone who went to Norfolk State," said Glen Mason, a Norfolk video producer and former NSU sports information director. "In many ways, our athletic program is the face of Norfolk State."

Athletic events serve as communal gatherings - home football games at the historically black university can often feel like reunions for many local residents.

But Norfolk State's athletic program faces imposing financial challenges that, if unchecked, officials acknowledge could threaten its capacity to remain in Division I. NSU athletics lost nearly $2.4 million combined during the 2012-13 and 2013-14 fiscal years, according to documents provided by the Virginia Auditor of Public Accounts. Final figures for 2014-15 aren't yet available.
