GCAC awards: 3's a charm for Pirkl and Harris

NEW ORLEANS — Xavier University of Louisiana seniors Franziska Pirkl and Darian Harris were announced Tuesday as winners of Gulf Coast Athletic Conference volleyball awards for Oct. 5-11. Pirkl is the Setter of the Week, and Harris is the Defender of the Week.

Both won for the third time this season. They are the first XU volleyball players to be honored three times in a season by the GCAC since Taylor Reuther won three Player of the Week awards in 2011.

Pirkl, from Munich, Germany, and a graduate of Theodolinden Gymnasium, averaged 9.88 assists and 2.88 digs per set during Xavier's 3-0 week. She also had three aces, three blocks, 10 kills and hit .261. Pirkl produced assist/dig double-doubles against Belhaven and Philander Smith, giving her five this season. During the week she surpassed 3,000 career assists (a school-record 3,037) and 700 career digs (712).

Harris, from Gretna, La., and a graduate of McGehee School, had a pair of 20-digs performances and averaged 5.7 digs per set. She had her most digs ever in a three-set match — 22 against Belhaven — and her second-most ever in a GCAC match, 25 against Philander Smith. She also had seven aces for the week and served three apiece against Belhaven and Philander Smith.

Harris was the leader of a Xavier back row against Philander Smith which produced a season-high 86 digs.

The Gold Nuggets (11-7, 6-1 GCAC) will visit Talladega (5-16, 0-7) at 1 p.m. Saturday. Xavier's final home match of 2015 will start at 1 p.m. Oct. 31 against GCAC leader SUNO.
