NSU's Jeff Short earns top honors for preseason

NORFOLK, Virginia -- Norfolk State guard Jeff Short was voted the preseason Player of the Year in the MEAC on Tuesday by league coaches and sports information directors.

The Spartans, who finished second in the regular season last year, were selected third in the preseason poll behind North Carolina Central and Hampton. The Eagles won last year's regular season; the Pirates won the MEAC tournament title.

Short is the fourth Spartan in the last seven years to earn the preseason award, following Michael Deloach in 2009, Kyle O'Quinn in 2011 and Pendarvis Williams in 2013. He ranked second in the league and 29th in the nation last year in scoring at 19.1 points per game. He is the only returning player from last year's All-MEAC first team and one of just two from either the first or second team.
