Phillips, Tomasoni honored; XULA gets NAIA news Monday

NEW ORLEANS — Xavier University of Louisiana's Tiffany Phillips and Juliana Tomasoni are recipients of Gulf Coast Athletic Conference volleyball awards for Oct. 31-Nov. 6. Phillips was named Setter of the Week for the sixth time this season, and Tomasoni was chosen Attacker of the Week for the second time.

Phillips — from Gardena, Calif., and a graduate of Bishop Montgomery High School — set a XULA record for the most GCAC volleyball weekly awards in a season and tied Nour Abbes (women's tennis, 2014) for most weekly awards by a XULA freshman. Phillips averaged 9.13 assists per set during the GCAC Tournament, which the Gold Nuggets won for the sixth consecutive season. In a five-set championship victory Nov. 5 against Talladega, Phillips had 39 assists and six kills.

Tomasoni — a junior outside hitter/defensive specialist from Nova Trento, Brazil, and a graduate of Francisco Mazzola in her home country and Northeastern Oklahoma A&M — hit .414 during the GCAC Tournament and had 23 kills, five in the fifth set, against Talladega. Tomasoni ended the third and fifth sets of the GCAC final with kills.

The GCAC Tournament championship automatically qualified XULA (16-16) for the NAIA National Championship for the sixth consecutive year. The NAIA will announce its 44-team bracket at 10 a.m. Monday. The Gold Nuggets will play Saturday in one of 12 opening-round matches on campus sites.
