Previewing The Tigers:
It was a rough night at the office for the "Men In Orange" last Friday night, dropping a 50-13 home decision to #5 Lindsey Wilson. Miscues and missed opportunities hurt the Tigers efforts in the contest with dropped touchdowns, balls fumbled through the endzone, blocked field goals, safeties, and a high amount of penalty yards being their undoing in the contest. Not to mention, the Tigers defense had a difficult time putting the clamps on a high powered Blue Raider offense, surrendering 555 yards of total offense (311 on the ground and 244 through the air).
On a positive note, the EWC offense put up a season-high 378 yards of total offense and scored on the game's opening drive with a short pass to converted H-Back Deante Hale.
Freshman QB Derrick Jones is beginning to solidify his spot as the starting QB, with a solid first career start last Friday. Jones went 20-37 passing for 242 yards and two touchdowns, while also adding 78 yards on 18 carries for Edward Waters. Through two games, Jones is completing 53.1% of his passes, and four TDs. Freshman WR Tyler Gilbertleads the Tigers in receiving, averaging 3.5 catches per game, 19 yards per catch, and one receiving TD. On the ground, it's been by committee with freshmen Jacquez Pelham, Corey Hammett, and Jarkeavis Bess getting a bulk of the work. Junior RB Richard Montgomery will return to the lineup this week after missing the LWC contest with an ankle injury.
Defensively, the Tigers look to bounce back from a rough showing last week but, will be without freshman LB standout Aaron Louis as he is nursing an injury. Edward Waters was able to force their first turnover of the season last week as senior DT Gavin Anderson forced a fumble on a strip-sack, allowing freshman LB Elijah Spivey to recover.
With a win on Saturday, Edward Waters will snap a 12-game losing streak (Last Win: Nov. 12, 2016 vs. Va. Univ. of Lynchburg, 42-6) and a nine game road losing streak (Last Road Win: Nov. 7, 2015 at Warner, 18-13).
About Point:
The Skyhawks will face their third consecutive opponent from "The Sunshine State" on Saturday in their home opener. Point opened up the season with a 17-5 loss at Ave Maria in Naples, then followed it up with a 48-7 loss last week at FCS member Stetson in DeLand.
On the offensive side of the ball, the Skyhawks are led by Senior QB Derek Bellard. The Lake Charles, Louisiana native through two games is completing over 50% of his passes and averaging over 97 yards per game. On the ground, Quay Hartfield is the leading ground gainer with 82 yards on 19 carries, averaging 4.3 yards per carry. Chase Turner leads the Skyhawks through the air, averaging 9.8 yards per reception.
Defensively, DB Micah Oglesby leads the team with 17 total tackles and averaging 8.5 tackles for loss per game.
