Rush sign 2; XULA to compete at HBCU nationals
NEW ORLEANS — Xavier University of Louisiana has signed two men's tennis student-athletes for the 2018-19 season: Ghassan Alansi and Santiago Perez.
The XULA men will compete for the first time this fall in the HBCU National Championships at Orlando, Fla., Thursday through Saturday. It will be the Gold Nuggets' second tournament.
"I am very happy with these additions to the Gold Rush," 16th-year XULA head coach Alan Green said. "I am confident that they will be a boost to the team. Both Ghassan and Santiago are very high character and very talented."
Alansi, from Sana'a, Yemen, is a transfer from NCAA Division II Chowan University in Murfreesboro, N.C. He will have three seasons of eligibility at XULA. As a Chowan freshman, Alansi was 15-5 in singles and 16-8 in doubles and played No. 1 singles and doubles for the Hawks. Alansi was 68th in the ITA's Division II end-of-season singles ranking and first-team All-Conference Carolinas.
Perez is a freshman from Pereira, Colombia. He was a national singles champion in three age groups: the 12s, 14s and 16s. His Universal Tennis Rating (UTR) is 13.0. Perez's father, Johnny, teaches tennis at an academy in their home country.
XULA's men and women both reached the semifinals of the 2018 NAIA National Championships and were No. 3 in the end-of-season coaches polls.
