Vaughan, Patterson receive GCAC's weekly honors

Xavier University of Louisiana women's volleyballNEW ORLEANS — Maliya Vaughan and Francis Patterson, Xavier University of Louisiana's first finishers Saturday during the Allstate Sugar Bowl Cross Country Festival, are the recipients of Gulf Coast Athletic Conference Runner of the Week awards for Sept. 10-16.
     
Vaughan, a senior from Elk Grove, Calif., and a graduate of West Campus High School, ran 5,000 meters in 21 minutes, 21.63 seconds to finish 11th out of 58 women. Patterson, a freshman from Arlington, Texas, and a graduate of Bowie High School, began his collegiate career with a 10th-place finish out of 59 men and a time of 17:24.10.
     

The GCAC weekly award is the second of Vaughan's career.
     

Next for the Gold Rush and Gold Nuggets will be the McNeese Cowboy Stampede Sept. 29 at Enos Derbonne Sports Complex in Lake Charles, La. The women's 5K will start at 8:30 a.m., followed by the men's four-mile race at 9 a.m.
