Alcorn beats rival Jackson State 81-75

ASU Braves Coach Larry Smith
LORMAN, MS — Alcorn State took the lead with 1:25 left in the second half over SWAC rival Jackson State with a three-pointer by Marquiz Baker. The late shot put Alcorn up 73-71 and they were able to close out the visiting Tigers with an 81-75 victory.

“Jackson State is a good team, they’re solid. Our defense did a great job, we shut them down in terms of percentage,” head coach Larry Smith said. “Our kids played hard for 40 minutes and we stepped up down the stretch.”

Early in the game, the Braves led by as many as 10 as the offense took advantage of many put backs and fast breaks points. Meanwhile, the defense contested every shot well, not allowing the Tigers to have any open looks at the basket.

JSU Turnovers lead to Alcorn State Lady Braves 66-54 win

The Lady Braves of Alcorn State defeated conference rival Jackson State 66-54. Alcorn, now 7-12 (6-4), outscored the Lady Tigers despite shooting a lower field goal percentage. However, the Lady Braves were more efficient from with three-pointers and from the free throw line.

The Lady Braves shot 50 percent from downtown, making eight while shooting 20-29 from the free throw line.

Baker, Braves ambush Tigers

Not this time, Marquiz Baker told Jackson State. Not this time. Baker, Alcorn State's fiery shooting guard, scored 23 points - seven of those coming inside 2 minutes - and the Braves beat Jackson State 81-75 on Saturday night, upsetting the conference-leading Tigers and breaking a seven-game losing streak to their bitter rivals.

Said Baker: "I was determined not to let Jackson State beat us at home this time."

The conference's ninth- place team entering the day, Alcorn State (3-17, 3-8 Southwestern Athletic Conference) rarely trailed and knocked off the the Tigers (12-10, 8-2) three weeks after losing to them by 26 points in Jackson.

Former Alcorn State receiver Emmanuel Arceneaux headed to Minnesota Vikings

VANCOUVER - It might be a long, long stretch to suggest that Emmanuel Arceneaux is going to become the next Donald Driver. But Driver too was undersold when he was drafted in the seventh round in 1999 by the Green Bay Packers out of Alcorn State, a small, historically black university in Lorman, Miss. Driver went on to become the Packers all-time leading receiver.

Arceneaux, another unheralded Alcorn State prospect, from the NFL's perspective, will have his signing with the Minnesota Vikings officially confirmed today after he and his agent, Bardia Ghahremani, reached agreement on a three-year, $1.8 million deal early Saturday morning with the club.

New receiver took Canadian detour to NFL

Emmanuel Arceneaux wondered if his football career was over when he wasn't selected in the 2009 NFL draft after his career at Alcorn State.

He figured he might end up "sitting at home on the couch and just working a normal job." He chose a different path and headed to the Canadian Football League. Now, after two productive seasons with the B.C. Lions, Arceneaux is set to sign a three-year deal with the Vikings.

The contract could be worth as much as $1.8 million and includes a $75,000 signing bonus.

Local Alcorn fans’ reactions to hiring of Melvin Spears positive

ASU Braves Coach Melvin Spears
NATCHEZ, MS — Alcorn State football fans in Natchez say they are excited to begin a new era of Braves football. Henry Houze, president of the Natchez Chapter of the Alcorn State University National Alumni Association, said he’s glad Spears was selected as the new coach.

“He’s a product of our university and has tremendous experience, being out of school for 28 years,” Houze said. “He was a SWAC title and black college national championship (when he coached at Grambling State). He’s a proven winner.”

Spears comes to Alcorn after serving as offensive coordinator at Alabama State for the past two seasons. Houze said Spears’ years of experience in the SWAC will play to his advantage at Alcorn, especially in recruiting athletes to play for the Braves.

Spears' goal: Entertain you

His eyes hidden behind black sunglasses, his body draped in a khaki suit, Melvin Spears gave Alcorn State fans on Wednesday what he hopes to put on the football field this fall: An entertaining show. During a 20-minute voice-raising, fist-pounding speech, Alcorn's new coach didn't hide his brash, sometimes cocky, persona.

In fact, the former Alcorn receiver and Grambling State head coach let his audacious aura take center stage in front of about 100 purple-clad fans - all crammed into a meeting room at the downtown Jackson Marriott hotel.

He was confident - "We're going to win these games," Spears said. He was bold - "Alcornites ... we've always been the best," he said. He was loud - "This is my house! This is our house!" Spears yelled to them.
And, he's prepared to amuse - "Our task is to come in on Saturdays and entertain you. That's what it's all about. It's about showtime," he said.

Alcorn State picks Melvin Spears as new football coach

Melvin Spears is returning to Alcorn State.

Spears, the former Alcorn receiver and Grambling State head coach, has been selected as the Braves new football coach, Spears’ family and friends confirmed to The Clarion-Ledger late Tuesday night. Spears and Alcorn administrators did not return multiple phone messages Tuesday.

Spears’ selection ends a three-week long search to replace Earnest Collins, who left after two years to lead his alma mater, Northern Colorado

Hornets' OC Spears takes Alcorn State job

Alabama State head coach Reggie Barlow is looking for another offensive coordinator. Melvin Spears, who helped the Hornets generate enough offense to win the SWAC East Division title this past season, accepted a job on Tuesday night to become the head football coach at Alcorn State.

An announcement will be made at a formal news conference today in Lorman, Miss.

"It's a major blow," Barlow admitted. "One of the reasons we brought coach Spears in was his experience. Me being a younger guy, I wanted as many guys with experience as possible. He can talk about the traditions with the players, he can talk about the conference with the players, he can talk about what teams are going to do. He's a really great recruiter as well.

Earnest Collins Jr. finalizes University of Northern Colorado football coaching staff

While the University is still ironing out all the details of the contract for Collins, his base salary will be $95,000, pending UNC Board of Trustees approval. The $95,000 was the same amount that former UNC head coach Scott Downing was making before he was fired. Collins had a yearly salary of $140,000 at Alcorn State University.

University of Northern Colorado football coach Earnest Collins Jr. has completed his coaching staff with an offensive and defensive coordinator and the retention of two coaches from the previous staff, the university announced Wednesday.

Offensive coordinator Michael Armour and defensive coordinator Zach Shay come to the Bears from Alcorn State, where they worked under Collins, the Braves’ former head coach.

Collins also retained longtime UNC assistant coach Keith Grable, who will stay on as recruiting coordinator, and will move from running backs coach to wide receivers coach.

Head coach in NFL a fate fit for Mississippian Leslie Frazier

Minnesota Vikings Head Coach Leslie Frazier
For Leslie Frazier, it became a ritual on road trips that required the Alcorn State University football team to travel by air: Just before the plane taxied toward the runway for takeoff, assistant coach Willie "Rat" McGowan would seek out the all-conference cornerback.

McGowan was scared silly of flying, and he always wanted Frazier praying hard that the jet would reach its destination. So out of a plane full of players, coaches, managers, trainers and school officials, why did he choose Frazier?

"When he spoke, people listened," McGowan says. "So I figured ..." Yes, he figured God would listen to Frazier a little more closely than anyone else.

JSU Tigers blast winless Braves, extend SWAC run

JSU Coach Tevester Anderson
It was the week before Christmas when Tyrone Hanson knew his 3-point shot had to change. His flick of the wrist needed an adjustment. His stroke of the arm warranted a modification. Said Hanson: "I just figured out my shot."

Boy, did he. Hanson made six of eight 3-pointers and Jackson State pounded Alcorn State 90-64 Saturday evening, winning a seventh straight game over the rival Braves and scoring its most points in a regulation Southwestern Athletic Conference game in eight years.

The win gave the Tigers (7-8, 3-0 SWAC) a third straight victory. And JSU has now scored at least 80 points against Alcorn (0-13, 0-3) in seven of the last eight meetings with the Braves.

Alcorn's Defensive Coordinator lands at Northern Colorado

Zach Shay was one of the over 30 applicants who recently applied for the Galesburg High School (Illinois) football coaching job. He didn’t even get an interview. Shay, who has served on the defensive staff at Alcorn State University for the past three years, will assume a similar position with the University of North Colorado starting today.

Alcorn State’s head coach Earnest Collins Jr. was hired as the new head coach at UNC last week and Shay will accompany him to the Division IAA school located in Greeley, Colo., about 45 miles north of Denver.

“It’s just a better situation, better facilities and they play in the IAA playoffs which is a better opportunity if they win,” said Shay. “I’m very excited. It’s a great opportunity.”

Earnest Collins Jr. ready to make Northern Colorado football coaching job his own

UNC Bears Coach Earnest Collins Jr.
The University of Northern Colorado football program has enlisted a strong choice to serve as its next leader.

Earnest Collins Jr. has his job. He has sought this position, worked for it, prepared for it, learned for it and now has ownership of it. It is not a stepping stone. It is not a learning experience. It's what he wants, and that is a good thing for the Bears.

Collins first attempt to claim his job occurred in 2005 when he interviewed to replace Kay Dalton. Not hired, he listened closely to the critiques relayed to him.

His true calling: Earnest Collins achieves goal to become UNC coach

Earnest Collins, Jr., didn't always know where life was going to take him, but he certainly knew that it would someday lead him back to the University of Northern Colorado.

That dream happened for Collins, the former Alcorn State head coach, on Thursday when he was officially introduced as the new head football coach at UNC before a full house in the Champions Room of the Butler-Hancock Sports Pavilion.

Speaking from his heart and without any script, Collins, who is the Bears 16th head coach, displayed his passion for the UNC football program, his family and his faith as he was introduced publicly for the first time before a room filled with media, UNC personnel and supporters of the program.

Collins aims to restore passion for program

GREELEY, CO - New University of Northern Colorado head football coach Earnest Collins Jr. made one thing clear Thursday at his introductory news conference: He is going to make sure that Colorado and the school's alumni are excited about UNC football again.

Collins promised he would restore the winning tradition the school had during his playing days and his time as an assistant coach when it was a Division II program. "My No. 1 focus right now is to recapture the state of Colorado," Collins said. "That's the No. 1 goal for me, because when I was here, that's what it was. I don't know what it's like to lose. We never lost here."

Alcorn State Collins accepts head football coaching job at Northern Colorado

Collins becomes first minority head coach at NCU
LORMAN, MS — For the third time in four seasons, Alcorn State University will have a new head football coach patrolling the sidelines in 2011.

The University of Northern Colorado announced Tuesday that Earnest Collins has accepted the head coaching position for the Bears. Collins coached the Braves in 2009 and 2010, amassing an 8-12 overall record and a 7-9 record in the SWAC.

Collins served as associate head coach at Alcorn in 2008 under then-head coach Earnest Jones. After Jones was relieved of his duties following the 2008 season, Collins was elevated to head coach. He finished 3-6 overall and 3-4 in the SWAC in 2009, and was 5-6 overall and 4-5 in the SWAC this past season.

Northern Colorado hires Earnest Collins as its football coach

GREELEY, CO — Northern Colorado found its new football coach at Alcorn State and in the UNC record book. Earnest Collins Jr., a former UNC defensive back, punt returner and assistant coach who still has a school record, is returning to his alma mater to be the Bears' head coach. Collins was Alcorn State's coach the last two seasons.

"This is a chance for me to come home to the place that made me who I am," Collins said in a statement. "My mom and UNC made me the man I am today, so I am thankful for the opportunity to come home. I believe every coach's dream is to come back and coach at his alma mater and win championships at his alma mater. I can't wait to get started and see what we can accomplish. I know we can do some great things at UNC."

Former UNC football standout to take over as head coach

GREELEY, CO — A former Northern Colorado assistant coach has been named as the school's new coach. Athletics director Jay Hinrichs said Tuesday that Ernest Collins Jr. will be the Bears' 16th football coach. Collins, on the team from 1991 to 1994, is the school's single-season school record holder for punt return yards — 497 his senior season. He amassed a total of 978 punt return yards.

Collins told the Greeley Tribune that a press conference on his new job is planned for Thursday. Collins will succeed Scott Downing, fired in November after five seasons and a 9-47 overall record.

Brown named 18th president of Alcorn State University

LORMAN, MS — The vigor of a young man at the top of his game caused both excitement and concern for Braves fans Tuesday. After an all-day listening session to determine the next president of Alcorn State University at its main campus in Lorman, M. Christopher Brown II was officially given the job.

Brown, a Charleston, S.C., native, currently serves as executive vice president and provost at the historic Fisk University in Nashville, Tenn. From 8 a.m. until 4 p.m., Brown answered questions from students, faculty, alumni and leaders from the school and community.

The Mississippi Board of Trustees of State Institutions of Higher Learning announced its unanimous decision to hire Brown as president after receiving feedback from the various groups.

Christopher Brown hired as Alcorn State University's new president

LORMAN, MS — The state College Board has hired Christopher Brown to become the 18th president of Alcorn State University. Brown, 38, currently is vice president and provost at Fisk University in Nashville. He’s expected to start at Alcorn in January.

Brown, a Charleston, S.C.-native, has been fielding questions from campus constituents for most of the day. In meetings with alumni, faculty, students and others, he discussed his vision for Alcorn, touching on athletics, budgets, student activities and fundraising.

SWAC: Hunt for hidden gems

Coast football players fall under the recruiting radar each year. The three in-state SWAC schools -- Alcorn State, Jackson State and Mississippi Valley State -- all plan to find a few hidden gems. SWAC programs usually don’t start recruiting until the first week of December to better utilize their resources in these tough economic times.

“The SWAC programs are going to really get active now that the seasons are over,” Steve Robertson of Scout.com said. “They don’t have the budgets the bigger schools do, so they don’t have a lot of on campus events like summer camps to evaluate a lot of talent. They have to depend on good old-fashion road work and film study.

Recruiting season hits full gear for Alcorn State

LORMAN — Alcorn State’s 2010 season might have ended last on Nov. 20 with a 27-14 loss to Jackson State in the Capital City Classic. But the Braves’ second season is still in full swing. Now that the season is over, Alcorn State coaches are canvassing the state and country trying to find athletes that will keep the Braves’ program heading in the right direction.

In the last three years, Alcorn has improved its record from 2-10 to 3-6 to 5-6. And head coach Earnest Collins said getting quality recruits is critical to continuing the upward trend of the program.

Legendary Alcorn State Coach Davey L. Whitney Inducted into National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame

2010 National Collegiate Basketball HoF Davey L. Whitney
Alcorn State University legendary Coach Davey Whitney was among eight inductees to the 2010 National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame Class on Sunday, November 21, 2010.

His teams won 711 games in 35 years of coaching but Davey Whitney did so much more than win
basketball games. The “Wiz”, who earned more letters than any other athlete at Kentucky State University, brought his Alcorn State University program to heights that never seemed possible.

The Braves dominated the Southwestern Athletic Conference with nine championships and little recognition until 1979, when Whitney guided his team to a berth in the NIT, one of the first for a historically black institution. Alcorn also upset in-state rival Mississippi State in the opening round.

The next year, Alcorn earned a berth in the NCAA tournament, one of four for Whitney coached teams, and topped South Alabama in the opening round. USA Basketball has recognized Whitney’s coaching talents on several national teams and he was the recipient of the NCAA’s first Journey Award in 1972.

Whitney’s coach teams won a total of 12 SWAC championships. Whitney’s Alcorn State Braves became the first historically black college team to win an NIT game, and one year later, Alcorn became the first historically black college to win an NCAA Tournament game.

Whitney started his coaching career at Burt High School in Nashville, Tenn., and coached at Texas Southern for five years before moving to Alcorn State University.

Alcorn State graduate Leslie Frazier Named Interim Head Coach, Minnesota Vikings

Tony Dungy: Leslie Frazier's 'ability to communicate' will help him with Vikings

New Minnesota Vikings coach Leslie Frazier got an endorsement on Monday from his former boss, ex-Indianapolis Colts coach Tony Dungy. Frazier, installed as Vikings coach following the dismissal of Brad Childress, was the secondary coach for the Colts when Dungy led them to a Super Bowl win after the 2006 season.

Dungy told the St. Paul Pioneer Press that Frazier will have a significant challenge in taking over the 3-7 Vikings in the middle of a disappointing season, but added that his former assistant has the right mentality for it.

Leslie Frazier Bio + Coaching Resume

EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. - (Monday Nov. 22, 2010): Brad Childress Fired by Vikings, Leslie Frazier Takes Over.  Leslie Frazier has served as the assistant head coach and defensive coordinator of the Minnesota Vikings under Brad Childress since 2007. Frazier took over for Mike Tomlin who left Minnesota for the Pittsburgh Steelers head coaching job.

Frazier’s Vikings defense led the NFL in 2009 with 48.0 sacks and the team ranks 3rd in NFL with 131.0 sacks since 2007. The Vikings defense ranked No. 6 in the NFL in 2009, the second-straight season ranked No. 6 in ...

Long overdue, Frazier gets golden opportunity

When I ran into defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier at the Vikings' summer training camp, I asked him about his head-coaching aspirations, when he thought he might get a shot and what in the world happened to his once red-hot candidacy. Frazier laughed and said he wasn't sure, but he insisted he was still interested in moving up -- provided, of course, it was the right job.

Frazier is First SWAC Alumnus as NFL Head Coach

Alcorn State graduate Leslie Frazier was named as the interim head coach of the Minnesota Vikings Monday, becoming the first Alcorn State and Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) graduate to become a head coach in the National Football League.

JSU Tigers cap off season with win over Alcorn State despite injury to star QB

Most of the records never fell. That convincing margin of victory never happened. But in the end, with its star quarterback watching from the sideline, his throwing arm in a sling, Jackson State won the Capital City Classic. And that, as they say, is all that matters. "I'll be straight with you," JSU coach Rick Comegy said, "it was about winning."

Comegy's Tigers beat Alcorn State 27-14 on Saturday afternoon, thanks to four early touchdowns, a stiff defensive effort and an inept opponent.

The Tigers (8-3, 6-3 Southwestern Athletic Conference) hit the eight-win mark for the third time in Comegy's five years, and they did it in front of more than 43,000 at Mississippi Veterans Memorial Stadium, the largest Classic crowd in four years.

Notebook: Therriault falls short of most school records

This wasn't how the season was supposed to end for Jackson State quarterback Casey Therriault. He was supposed to be the new holder of a bevy of school records. Not sulking in the locker room with a broken collarbone. The latter, though, was the truth Saturday afternoon in Jackson State's 27-14 win over Alcorn State. Therriault failed to break most of the half-dozen school passing marks he was on the cusp of breaking entering the game.

Therriault did break Robert Kent's record for completions in a season. He needed just seven of those and had 16 in his 25 minutes played Saturday. He also broke the school record for completion percentage in a season. With his 16-of-22 performance against Alcorn, Therriault has a 58.3 completion rate, surpassing Jimmy Oliver's 58.0 mark.

Jackson St. - Alcorn State

Injuries force Tigers to play QB shuffle

Of all the weeks, of all the games, of all the unfortunate breaks. Jackson State backup quarterback Dedric McDonald suffered a foot injury at practice earlier this week.

That wasn't too big of a deal - until starting quarterback Casey Therriault suffered a broken collarbone in the second quarter of JSU's 27-14 win over Alcorn State. With McDonald in crutches on the sideline, Mark Thigpen, a true freshman and graduate of Callaway High School, was thrown into the mix.

But the Tigers weren't about to burn Thigpen's redshirt without trying someone else. Tight end Renty Rollins was moved to quarterback - a disastrous move that likely cost JSU points.

Braves' attack fizzles in 2010 finale

Alcorn State's offensive production in the Braves' 27-14 loss to Jackson State could be exemplified by one play. With Alcorn trailing 21-7 early in the second quarter, the Braves lined up at the Tigers' 1-yard line. Alcorn freshman quarterback Brandon Bridge ran up the middle, but fumbled the ball into the end zone.

Jackson State recovered and returned the ball 94 yards. The Tigers scored two plays later on a run from junior quarterback Casey Therriault to take a 20-point lead. Alcorn coach Earnest Collins said the 14-point swing was incredibly detrimental.

JSU's Wilson Excels in the "Air Raid"

JACKSON, MS (WLBT) - 43 points, 49 points and most recently 52 points, the Jackson State Air Raid offense is opening eyes in the SWAC this season. Do Tiger fans know the high powered O brought in by offensive coordinator Earnest Wilson is complements of this man? Coach Hal Mumme.

The former Kentucky head coach and current McMurry University head man is considered the architect of the Air Raid offense and a mentor of Earnest Wilson.

JSU sees Bridge as special threat

Jackson State fans will finally see the guy everyone in the conference has been talking about all season long. Alcorn State quarterback Brandon Bridge, a true freshman from Canada, comes to Jackson on Saturday for the Capital City Classic. He enters with quite a reputation and a list of sparkling stats - especially for a teenager.

Bridge has accounted for more than 70 percent of Alcorn's offense this season. He's thrown for more than 2,000 yards and has run for nearly 600. He's scored 18 touchdowns. His long, lanky, 6-foot-5, 205-pound frame and surprising speed have made Bridge a bugaboo for opposing defenses to contain.

Alcorn vs. JSU is battle for pride

The Capital City Classic no longer has SWAC championship implications. When Jackson State (7-3, 5-3) and Alcorn State (5-5, 4-4) clash on Saturday at 1 p.m. in Jackson’s Mississippi Veterans Memorial Stadium, only bragging rights are at stake.

Alabama State (7-3, 6-3) has clinched the Eastern Division title and berth in the SWAC championship game. Jackson State can tie for the crown with a victory, but the Hornets beat the Tigers 32-30 two weeks ago.

Therriault, a transfer from Grand Rapids Community College, has thrown for a SWAC-leading 3,272 yards and 29 touchdowns. Bridge, a freshman from Canada, is considered the Braves’ top quarterback since Steve McNair. Bridge has thrown for 2,016 yards, while rushing for 570 yards and accounting for 26 TDs.

Prairie View Panthers dash Alcorn Braves' SWAC title dreams

PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas — Alcorn State was within 4 seconds of continuing to control its destiny for the SWAC East division championship. But two Prairie View touchdowns in the final seconds handed Alcorn a 35-27 defeat and ended any hopes the Braves had of reaching it’s first ever SWAC championship game.

K.J. Black threw a 35-yard touchdown pass to Shaun Stephens with 4 seconds remaining to give the Panthers a 29-27 lead. Alcorn (5-5, 4-4 SWAC) then fumbled the ensuing kickoff and Prairie View ran it back for a touchdown on the final play of the game for the final scoring margin.

Prairie View rallies late for wild victory over Alcorn State

PRAIRIE VIEW — A perfect nightmare unfolded for Prairie View A&M in the fourth quarter of Saturday’s game against Southwestern Athletic Conference rival Alcorn State.

The Panthers had blown a 23-point, third-quarter lead after allowing the Braves to score 27 unanswered points and trailed by four with only 25 seconds remaining. They were left with possession at their 22-yard line and no timeouts, and all energy had seemingly been zapped from what remained of a bewildered crowd at Blackshear Stadium.

And then suddenly, a dream ending became reality for Prairie View.
